Yeah it's always just been a dumb/bad idea. I'm fine with more cameos like Link and Inkling but the focus should always be on the Mario universe. Just let Smash be Nintendo's one premier crossover IP.

Wario Wario Wario
I've heard that Nintendo considers basically every subsector of Mario a seperate entity, like not just in the sense of "WarioWare is seperate from Yoshi's Island", but rather "Super Mario 64 is seperate from Super Mario Sunshine" and the only reason Smash is allowed a wider pool of Mario characters like K. Rool, the WarioWare employees, and the paper partners is because it's a crossover - I believe an Archie Sonic writer talked about it in a podcast - so in Nintendo's twisted sense I think Mario Kart should be a crossover, but not in... everyone else's sense. Give me Ashley; Rambi; and the Stork, but not Kirby; Ness; or Captain Falcon. Sonic would be rad though.
