Okay, hear me out here - if they ever do another Punch-Out!! game I think it'd be really cool to see some weird and somewhat obscure picks tossed into the roster of fighters. Bear in mind - Bald Bull, for example, originated in Arm Wrestling, and the Wii game did have Donkey Kong!

Here's my thoughts: first up, someone from Pro Wrestling. Whilst Starman is the more famous pick, I'd personally go with The Amazon - his nature, being inspired by monster movies like The Creature from the Black Lagoon could be really interesting and fit right in with the weirdness of some of Punch-Out!!'s characters. And hey, if you wanted to go the route of the Amazon's appearance being a costume, that'd be awesome. I do also think the Urban Champion from, uh, Urban Champion could be cool. Any thoughts of your own?
Y'know, shoutouts to that one guy from the very first showing of the Melee intro who exclaimed in a combination of shock and delight, "Ice Climbers???" when they were shown on screen. It's weirdly warming to see (or, well, hear) a response like that in person to a pair of characters so relatively obscure at the time. Hope you enjoy their improved jump physics in the Smash series, wherever you are!
I think it would have been cool if Dark Samus had its appearance from Metroid Prime 2: Echoes as one of its alternate costumes, like a minor model swap as seen with characters like Ike. It'd only be a minor change, and it's still cool that its Metroid Prime 3: Corruption appearance made it in, but I still think it'd be cool.

This isn't even getting into decloning the moveset lol
Hi all, Knee here. Thought I best let y'all know - turns out my laptop stopped working earlier today (it seemed to be on its way out anyways, I've had it a while), and my PC is on the slower side in terms of... um... doing anything - so I'll mostly be on my phone for the time being, or at least until I get either my laptop fixed or a new one from uni. Not to say I'll be dropping offline, but I might not be as active, and I somewhat expect the quality of some of my stuff here such as Creation Thread submissions and the like to dip for a while because of it. Hopefully it'll be back to normal soon - sorry for wasting your time and have a blessed day :yeahboi:
I keep getting sent this short video-form meme of an anteater using its tongue to eat an ant with this cool synthy piece behind it and I cannot explain why but it has completely and utterly captivated me in a way few memes have - I have absolutely no idea why but "funky anteater" is now living in my head rent-free
Question: Do you think that the "Wii Fit Series" in Smash should be extended to represent "The Wii Series" as a whole, extending things like Spirits and music to other Wii things (like the Shop theme, maybe music from Wii Chess, stuff like that) would be included in that, or should it remain as the "Wii Fit series" as well as having "the Wii series"
Random question: Would you prefer it if clone characters were to have a couple of moves changed by pulling them from other characters in the game (kind of like how Falcon's up tilt in Smash 64 was pulled from Samus's), or would you prefer that they remain similar in moveset to their "original" with only functional differences (like Lucina's removal of Marth's tipper mechanic)?
I feel like something people don't talk about all too much in terms of Smash characters is the concept of "accuracy to the source material." Personally, I think Smash characters work best when the source material is a clear inspiration and springboard, but doesn't limit the potential for fun and interesting playstyles! For instance - Fox and Captain Falcon didn't start with much to pull from, but they've become really fun in their own right by exploring concepts at play in their home series. On the other hand, reception toward Steve has somewhat soured over time due to his immense complexity for a Smash character, and nobody ever mains Mega Man despite his selling point being "it's like you're playing the original game!" Though, that is just my take - I'm the sort to like a balance between both sides of things.

WaWaWa pretty much summed up my thoughts on this; I'm all for characters referencing source material, but not at the cost of making them more complex to play. With Sonic, for instance, I do think he should swap out his current Side Special for something like the Boost, but I don't want him to have the Boost Gauge, if that makes any sense. (I'd personally go with the Light Speed Dash in this case, but I digress.)

I should probably make a tier list of "how much source material is too much" sometime.

I think Joker is a good example of this - like, looking back on the whole thing, I'm beginning to think that the Rebellion Gauge is just outright more fun than a Persona-swapping Wild Card ability would be. It makes him more approachable and yet provides a layer of complexity to his kit without overshadowing his entire moveset in it, and does represent the conceptual nature of a Persona well whilst not being bound specifically to how in-game mechanics function!

I saw a concept a while ago for giving Joker his Wild Card as a weird Kirby Copy Ability/counter hybrid. That sounds infinitely more fun and fluid than swapping between a bunch of Personas.
Okay, this is going to sound like a really slightly annoying thing to say but hear me out. I feel like a second F-Zero character has so much more potential than just being a Falcon echo, as much as I do like Black Shadow and Blood Falcon. I mean, think about it - F-Zero is partially known, amongst other things, for its ridiculously over-the-top character design, and I think that the potential to devise a moveset similarly based on the little we see of them in games like this could be potentially really cool. Let's take a look at a few of these characters - some more obvious than others!

First up, we've got in my mind one of the most obvious choices for this sort of thing - Pico. Pico's a good pick for this sort of thing for a few reasons, though. First up - legacy. Whilst other F-Zero picks would undeniably be very cool, Pico's one of the four playable characters that originated in the first game, right back on the SNES. Not only this, but Pico's got a lot of potential for a unique moveset of his own - various pieces of media suggest that he's an ex-military hitman, as well as being exceedingly well-trained with firearms as shown in his pilot profile movie back in GX.

In terms of moveset, I think we could also do well to pull from his vehicle of choice - the Wild Goose. Throughout the series, the Wild Goose somewhat lacks in acceleration, but has high cornering and durability stats to make up for this - which, due to its ability to generally survive a lot of punishment, promotes an aggressive playstyle (which is suggested in the vehicle's origin, being designed for attack runs as a military vehicle for the Polipoto military.) However, it lacks in drifting skill due to its weight.

Overall, Pico's moveset would have a focus on a high level of survivability and an aggressive playstyle, with high attack output - but despite a high-octane degree of power, he's got a couple of flaws that can be exploited. Whilst Falcon's high speed and damage output lends well to comboes, Pico's more focused on singular, heavy strikes - but somewhat suffers in speed due to this as a sort of tradeoff.

Next up, a bit of a wild-card who I think would be exceedingly unlikely, but could still be fun - Digi-Boy. Whilst he doesn't have the legacy of Pico due to only actually appearing in GX and AX, his personality and nature - being focused on his exceptional intelligence and his nature as a child genius - has given him a pretty... interesting reception over time.

Now, Digi-Boy in my mind lends well to a moveset that makes use of his nature as a genius. We could probably take hints from his machine, the Cosmic Dolphin - designed by him, it massively lacks in body strength due to his generally safe driving technique, but also an aspect of self-assuredness. Part of this comes down to the machine being mostly controlled by his computer systems, but it's also notable for having an exceptionally powerful boost.

Overall, I like to imagine that Digi-Boy would focus on a trapper-style moveset. Whilst he essentially falls apart in close combat due to being a literal child, his various inventions would work well here - for example, a high degree of manouverability due to his shoes would make a lot of logical sense. In general, his moveset rewards the player for closely observing the movements of their opponents - and acting accordingly - which mirrors Digi-Boy's own method of racing, specifically by developing equations that his Cosmic Dolphin can use.

Okay, let's dial it back just a bit from the downright bizarre picks to someone who also has a couple more appearances - Mighty Gazelle. Originating from X, he's quite interesting in terms of F-Zero lore - specifically, in that he was almost killed in a massive crash, which resulted in regulatory bodies having to really change up how F-Zero runs. However, being placed in a cybernetic body, Gazelle now essentially lives for racing - having an almost symbiotic relationship with his machine, the Red Gazelle.

Whereas Pico's moveset focused on powerful strikes and Digi-Boy's focused on a lot of stage control, I like to imagine that Mighty Gazelle could come the closest to Falcon's own moveset - but instead of being like Ganondorf in that he's slower and stronger, Gazelle is in fact even faster - but suffers in terms of outright damage output, and essentially becomes a glass cannon in order to offset his speed. Think of him as taking the moveset concept of Little Mac to the logical extreme (except, Gazelle actually functions in the air.)

This mirrors his machine quite well - the Red Gazelle is notable for having exceptionally high speed due to a low weight and low armour plating, given that Mighty Gazelle's mostly mechanical body means he doesn't need as much protection as normal, fleshier drivers. However, this means that his machine - whilst incredibly fast - massively lacks in terms of durability.

Not only this, but you could really experiment with various different implied skills and abilities given that Gazelle is, well, mostly mechanical. Like, there's not many other F-Zero characters where you could reasonably argue "oh they have powerful jets in their back similar to the F-Zero machines", and I think that sort of implied moveset design could be fun to see with a character like this! Honestly, whilst I started this brief thought piece as a diehard Pico fan, I wouldn't be opposed to seeing Gazelle hit the stage - there's a lot of potential for a fun, fast-paced moveset here!

There's a lot of other potential picks I didn't mention. Characters like Bio Rex and Dr. Clash lend well to a moveset on a conceptual level - but then perhaps weirder picks, like a teamup of Phoenix and QQQ (based on QQQ being Phoenix's sidekick throughout their adventures as part of the Time Police), or characters like Zoda, Silver Neelsen, the teamup of Gomar and Shioh, and Spade amongst others, could be cool too.

This probably looks really bad so I just want to stress - no, I don't think that characters like Black Shadow, Blood Falcon, Beastman, Baba or other "Falcon clones" are objectively bad picks, because I think they're really cool - rather, I think there's just a lot of potential aside from only clones! I really hope this isn't coming across as, like, petty or something, because I swear I don't mean it like that...

Ech, screw it, this'll be the only time this is ever relevant heh

Mighty Gazelle doesn't have any alts that change his model, but his alts are all references.

    1. His traditional, silvery look with hints of blue and red.
    2. His Player 2 colouration from GX, with a primarily yellow colour scheme with hints of black and red.
    3. His Player 3 colouration from GX, with a green-and-yellow colour scheme. This could also be a reference to the character Beastman, a racer who first appeared in F-Zero X, Gazelle's game of origin.
    4. His Player 4 colouration from GX, with a primarily blue colour scheme with hints of red and yellow. This may be a nod to Captain Falcon, another racer from the series.
    5. A "Red Gazelle" colouration with a primarily red look, with hints of yellow. This is in reference to Mighty Gazelle's F-Zero machine, the Red Gazelle, though may also be a slight nod toward Octoman, another racer originating from F-Zero X.
    6. A "Skull" alt, with an off-key white colour with hints of red and brown. This colouration is based on another racer known as The Skull, who also came close to death in a racing accident. Unlike Mighty Gazelle, however, Skull actually did die - but was resurrected with a combination of science and black magic.
    7. An "Arrow" alt, with a primarily brown colour scheme with hints of blue and red. This is in reference to the racers Super Arrow and Mrs. Arrow, a superhero pairing also originating from F-Zero X.
    8. A "Black Shadow" alt, with a primarily black colour scheme with hints of purple. This is a reference to the racer Black Shadow, a generally antagonistic force in the world of F-Zero and also a racer originating from F-Zero X.

I just think these are neat heh

Also, random point, but one of Mighty Gazelle's victory screens should be him morphing into a moped like in his pilot video back in GX. I think that degree of silliness and coolness being combined together would represent F-Zero pretty well!

You don't have to apologize. Someone made a full-on rant on Smashwiki on April Fools for Black Shadow's page that was just a full page about how Black Shadow was the worst pick for a second F-Zero rep.
I'd like to imagine that 50 years in the future, Switch emulation will be utterly flawless like a solid 60fps, 4K resolution, no slowdown whatsoever - and yet there'll still be slowdown on Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island due to its use of the Super FX chip
Okay here's a thought that just occurred to me that could be very fun, but would completely depend on how it was handled.

I think that a genuinely potentially fun pick for the next Smash game, as well as an interesting archetype and "concept" to bring to the table, would be the Sportsmate from Nintendo Switch Sports, and I'm genuinely dead-serious about this. HEAR ME OUT.

The conceptual idea of a "sports-based character" has actually been floating around in the community since the Smash 4 days, specifically as a contender for a theoretical fourth Mii Fighter slot (up there with Mii Mage in terms of popularity.) However, I think that this sort of role wouldn't fit a Mii very well, mostly because - ironically - the Sportsmates do actually have enough character to get in as, well, characters! For instance - their appearance would mostly be based on the various different Sportsmates seen in promotional material, similarly to how Inkling has different costumes that all represent the various costumes and the like that can be worn in the source material, without having to delve into Mii-levels of customisation.

In terms of moveset and general design, there's already quite a lot from the source material that could work well in something like this. For less gimmicky moves, you still have the various kicks seen in Soccer, the use of swords as seen in Chambara, or potentially other disjointed moves using the rackets or golf clubs. Not only this, but Sportsmate would lend well to a projectile-heavy moveset - be it by utilising fast-moving tennis balls as quick methods of pressure, larger but slower soccer balls as an element of stage control, or perhaps the bowling ball as a grounded form of pressure. I also think that the bluish outlines seen in various pieces of promotional material, as well as in the game, would give the Sportsmate's general moves quite an interesting look compared to some others.

Not only this, but Nintendo Switch Sports actually lends pretty well to future relevence given its continuation of a popular and well-known IP, and a live-service model intended to also maintain interest. Even if nobody seems to like it for releasing unfinished.

Also I think it would be cool if it had a mechanic where you can use the Joy-Con leg strap but it doesn't function until 9 months after the game's release
I think Billy Mitchell could be a fun addition to Smash, given his connection to Nintendo history and the like. His moveset would primarily focus around a combination of Donkey Kong mechanics, as well as a god-like nature with extremely high damage output due to his use of -

Our lawyers have instructed us not to comment further on this.
I love Smash fan concepts like, unironically, but there are some I love for semi-ironic reasons.

Imagine the riots that would occur if someone submitted Sub-Zero in the Smash Infinite creation thread

(no shade to the creator of this by the way, y'all do your thing :D)
Y'all ever suddenly have an unholy craving for peanut butter, and also cherry jam, and yet you've never had PB&J in the same sandwich, and you're just in that moment like "God, I could kill for a PB&J rn" despite not even knowing what it tastes like, having none of the necessary components, it being like 2:30am, and also it probably being considered an act of treason in the United Kingdom
Honestly, if we can give Pirahna Plant cute lil stubby legs that nobody ever complains about, then it stands to reason that we can, in theory, have Whispy Woods walking around on its roots and introduce them as a playable character in the Super Smash Bros series. I mean, think about it. Whispy Woods would be a "better representative of the Kirby series" than almost any other character due to their constant reoccurring appearances within the series as a whole. I don't really put much stock in the whole "representation" argument but hey if you're into that then get pelted from across the screen with apples. I mean imagine the splash screen:

Unironically though I would love to see more dumb, but cool, picks like that in Smash.

What the hell is this and why am I hooked? Like, it's such a simple "thing" in concept and admittedly it looks wildly uncomfortable but like. Wow. I love when aspects of the design of something are cleverly baked into the design of another thing to the point where it's an homage but the inclusions still make logical sense? Like, that sort of thing I find so, so cool conceptually and I can't lie, this looks awesome (even if I'd hate to be the one using it)
random thought i just had - even if gamecube games were released onto the switch in the form of nso, i honestly find it really hard to believe that melee would ever be brought onto the switch, but they’ll just so happen to conveniently never, ever comment on it

its kinda due to a few reasons – the general controversy surrounding melee a couple years back, the resulting potential controversy from various publications, and the "promotion" of melee over more modern smash titles, amongst other things – makes me think it'd be really, really unlikely for nintendo to actually bite the bullet and toss it on there

mark my words though even if they do they're going to artificially throttle the connection speed as much as possible for months after release to convince tournaments not to use "modern melee" because god forbid melee fans have an easy life i guess
i feel like i couldnt be trusted at all to be the head of smash's development. like we'd get the list from nintendo of like "oh yeah so we ideally want a couple of cross-promotion picks maybe a pokemon and if you could add a character from three houses thatd be nice" and the dlc ends up being comprised of picks like "skate or die kid" and "unicycle"
    me: googles giivasunner

Nintendo: "I sure hope that you're listening to Nintendo's music only using official Japan-exclusive promotional CD or vinyl releases of approximately twelve songs from the approximately 5 games we have released these for, or utilising the in-built music players in your genuine copies of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate or your genuine copies of the limited release of Super Mario 3D All-Stars by plugging headphones into your genuine, non-jailbroken Nintendo Switch and carrying it with you in spite of its awkwardly large in order to listen to that music through the means that we have so graciously provided to you and that you are deciding not to complain about the fact that you cannot listen to music from other titles by us due to our complete and utter lack of interest in providing streaming alternatives despite our competitors having done so since the late 2000s... because if not, you know what the consequences are!"

8 minutes to boil, and 2 minutes to eat. Admit it kid - y'know noodles can't be beat.
I find capsule hotels to be a really interesting thing on a conceptual level that I don't really think could exist anywhere but in Japan. It's something that's occurred to me before that, especially in cities like New York, London, San-Fran, and my beloved MANCHESTER WOOO YEAH BABY THATS WHAT ITS ALL ABOUT (im sorry), you'd think that the concept of "a particularly cheap hotel intended primarily for individual travellers as opposed to families and large groups which it achieves due to a small but still comfortable and functional form factor" would work really well in those sorts of places, but then whenever capsule hotels are introduced outside of Japan, they never really catch on

It's interesting because on the one hand I do understand why they don't catch on - people from the West, I suppose, don't like the idea of being in a relatively small space surrounded by others - but then something else occurred to me - the sheer number of hostels here in the UK, which in some ways, have similarities - except that capsule hotels are, firstly, not in the middle of bum**** nowhere, and secondly, actually tend to provide way more for the person staying there for significantly less!

A part of me wonders if something like that could ever catch on internationally. Like, when you think about it, it'd be really cool if it did - doing something like visiting different parts of larger cities would be significantly cheaper for the consumer, whilst the company itself is able to house more people in a smaller space and thus don't have to pay as much for the land - so, like, everybody wins, right? I guess that a part of it is some of the other business models you'd have present too - things like restaurants and such - but even then, I don't think that's particularly unreasonable given that a lot of hotels and B&B's have that sort of thing too.

Not sure why capsule hotels have been the weird fixation of the last like two hours but I suppose it could be worse
    S
    StoicPhantom
I think it might end up being a cultural barrier in some places. Japan is a society that is ok with sacrificing for convenience and a lot of their attitude towards consumption usually tends to be around disposable experiences. Things like Manga is bought on the cheap and discarded upon reading and overall you don't have a culture that is big on saving material goods thanks to things like the space issues Japanese cities have.

Places like America tend to be the opposite where haggling and getting a bargain deal is more appealing. Americans have never been ones for efficiency and value getting more for less where applicable. I'm not sure a tiny hotel for cheap would be as appealing as getting a relatively luxurious room for a bargain price, even if that price is more expensive than a capsule hotel would be.
im in this weird position where i feel like the shyguy would be really cool to see in smash and there's two very different ways i'd want to see them and i'm not sure which would be reasonable. firstly is a more traditional moveset which would be based on the mario/yoshi series more prominently and second is based more on mario kart (in reference to their role in mario kart ds) and i think thatd be really cool to see. lowkey a little surprised that smash doesn't have a "vehicle-based character" yet in terms of archetypes - like i get that wario has a side b but still
random question but like why doesnt the uk have 7/11s? is it because of the proliferation of convenience stores in the form of corner shops? is it because of express stores that fill the role? are 7/11 brit-phobic? idrk. just seems weird to me.
