  • It would not devalue Smash to do Nintendo VS CAPCOM or Nintendo Kart or whatever any more than, like, Marvel and DC characters in Fortnite or the LEGO Marvel/DC games would devalue Marvel VS CAPCOM, Injustice, or a Marvel VS DC movie/game or what-have-you.

Why is Capcom in all caps

Anyway, the anti-Crossroads buzz isn't about "devaluing Smash", it's about devaluing Mario Kart, by removing its consistent tone; ability to create new courses; and the wide pool of Mario characters to draw from.

Wario Wario Wario Wario Wario Wario Sometimes I write it like that, I guess. This isn't about that Crossroads reaction in particular, more so people saying that sometimes about other crossovers in relation to Smash. As for the Crossroads reaction, you can probably already tell that I think the negative reaction is a tad overblown and perhaps dramatic in proportion to what it actually is. I don't think they're going to do anything that interesting with a straightforward Mario Kart 9 based on what I've seen in the past, though I haven't really been invested in Mario Kart past 64 and Double Dash personally, so I'm probably not the best gauge on it, but to me it's like getting concerned about the integrity of Hot Shots Golf or getting angry that Shrek and Spider-Man are in Tony Hawk's Pro Skater.
My potentially unpopular opinion is that I’m fine with Mario Kart turning into a general Nintendo crossover precisely because I do not expect them to do anything interesting with a solely Mario-focused roster any more or pull out any interesting deep cuts from that series. That said, sure, a Goomba should get in eventually.
CAPCOM VS SNK, Puyo Puyo Tetris, Battletoads & Double Dragon, Street Fighter X Tekken, Crash and Spyro, that DOOM mod that includes Duke Nukem, Quake guy, and Chex Man, Mario & Sonic...at the Olympics...what other genre-definers or long-running rivals crossing together can I think of, ranging from somewhat sensible to nonsensical?

-Street Fighter VS Mortal Kombat. General aesthetic hovers somewhere around Fist of the North Star, Berserk, Hellsing, etc. Gameplay is fast and hits hard. There is blood sometimes, but not necessarily fatalities rather than massive, ridiculous super moves that can also be brutal.
-Mario & Sonic as an actual platformer where both's different mechanics and level design types come into play, giving you multiple ways to play through the game. Main playable characters are Mario, Luigi, Sonic, and Tails, though you can also unlock either Peach, Wario, Donkey Kong, Knuckles, Amy Rose, Blaze, and, for some reason, Alex Kidd and an updated Zelda 2-esque Link.
-Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest. It's not a board game. But instead it's uhhh. Dang, I dunno how to make this substantially different enough from both to warrant it being a crossover. That'd mostly be in the plot forcing heroes from different dimensions, yada yada yada...
-Metal Slug and Contra. Pretty simple run and gun that allows the use of power-ups from both series. Also has both the tank segments and the back-view hallway segments. DLC gives you Gunstar Heroes and Ikari Warriors somehow.
-Resident Evil and Silent Hill. Umbrella decides to unleash the T-Virus into Silent Hill, creating who knows what. Your characters are sent in to deal with all that.
-NBA Jam and Tony Hawk's Pro Skater. Basketball on skateboards. Do tricks for extra points. Also has a lot of ridiculous guest characters.
-Tomb Raider and Uncharted. They're both competing for the same treasure, you can take two story-paths, one for Lara, one for Nathan. Seems pretty simple.
-God of War and Devil May Cry and Bayonetta. They're all forced to team up to take on literal Satan. Because less people will object to that than literal God.
-Carmen Sandiego and Mavis Beacon. Carmen steals the written word and you have to type it all up again to recover it.
Alright, I'm running on fumes now. You can probably think of more, as well.
If I did a Smash fangame (I can barely do sprites and I can't code, plus other projects/things in life, so not happening any time soon), I probably would heavily focus it in some way, rather than just making "another Smash fangame", so to speak. I'd probably either make it a version that is heavily focused on the "gaming history" aspect, or make it a crossover with a slightly copyright dodging acronym name, like NVC, NVS, NVD, NVW, NVN, etc. What are all those? You can guess, I suppose. NVS could be like three things, at least.
Marvel fought CAPCOM, DC fought Mortal Kombat/Warner Games/Midway (next Injustice game can throw in Rampage monsters, Sinistar, a Knight on an Ostrich, etc., sure), the Ninja Turtles fought uhh Rabbids and Nickelodeon. Sure. What other "comic company VS a video gamer company/series" thing could there be?

Image Comics, I'd place up against either Namco-Bandai, due to preexisting crossovers (Negan in Tekken 7, Spawn in Soul Calibur 2), or ArcSys, given Guilty Gear feels like edgy 90's anime stuff of a sort and that'd match well with Spawn and Battle Chasers, at least. I'd kind of like to see those characters, Savage Dragon, Witchblade, the Darkness, Invincible, Shadowhawk, etc. filtered through that flashy anime style. I guess a version of that for Witchblade sort of exists already. Huh.

Dark Horse Comics feels like it has a dark edge to it with things like Hellboy, the Mask (in the original comics), Ghost, Grendel, Concrete, etc., but has a different sort of vibe to it than what you'd think of for Image's 90's output. It's apparently owned by a video game company now? They own...Gearbox and THQ, I guess. I have not much clue here. The only things I sort of know from Gearbox are Borderlands and Duke Nukem, I think? Duke probably fits pretty well in the Image roster, unless you remember Barb Wire. I guess if I were to go with one, I'd pick Namco if Image takes ArcSys. Usagi Yojimbo kind of fits alongside the likes of Yoshimitsu and Taki, I suppose. Then again, both Image and Dark Horse have a bunch of characters that kind of switch around from publisher to publisher, mostly because they both have a "creator owns the character" policy, for the most part. That's an over-simplification, and they sometimes have their own issues, to say the least, but it's at least a bit better than Marvel and DC's policies. Anyways...

Perhaps the true way to represent this and do an indie spiritual successor to Marvel VS CAPCOM is to take whoever ends up in Fraymakers/games like Fraymakers and pit them up against whoever you can get from this: https://comicvine.gamespot.com/war-of-the-independents/4050-45034/ MVC-type game with the Tick, Gumby, and SCUD the Disposable Assassin VS Shovel Knight, Commander Video, and OctoDad? Sure, why not?

IDW is mostly licenses, BOOM Studios is mostly licenses, I am doubting either will do big crossover games with all of those licenses, as tempting as Optimus Prime VS Sonic VS Judge Dredd or RoboCop VS Power Rangers VS John McClane sounds. Not really much coherent here. Hasbro VS someone, sure. Judge Dredd/RoboCop crossover? Makes sense. SEGA VS Archie, since they have a past together? Most of Archie's roster by itself is humans (who sometimes get involved with weird things, don't get me wrong), a witch, and a bunch of superheroes you've never heard of. So it's either mostly non-combatants or mostly obscurities. Your mileage may vary.

Scott Pilgrim had a successful enough video game, some even like it a bit more than the comic or movie (I think all three are pretty alright). Maybe they can cross over with River City Girls/Ransom, which is owned by...ArcSys. Go figure.

Type-Moon VS King Features Syndicate. Apparently licensing for Popeye costs very little. I'm just throwing random things against the wall now. But a comic strip characters fighting game would be fun. Garfield's probably not gonna be in it, though, because he's busy. He crossed over with Cuphead, as well, sort of. Maybe King Features VS Microsoft instead? The fight we've all been waiting to see: the Phantom VS Voodoo Vince. Certainly.

I don't exactly know where I'm going with all this. A new TMNT fighter would be neat. Maybe just do that, and later on the Street Sharks, Battletoads, etc. can be guest DLC.

None of this is likely, I realize. Don't worry about it.
Phase 1 of an 80's Cartoon Cinematic Universe, including whatever and loosely being based on the MCU
    Transformers
Roughly similar in plot to the 2007 movie, but with designs, tone, and the Witwickys being done more similarly to the cartoon, some similarities to the comics, perhaps. Basically, the Transformers both come to Earth from Cybertron, put into sleep for a while, but are reawakened by new forms of energy that can be potentially used to further their own Energon. The Autobots are trying to stop the Decepticons from conquering the world for this energy source, working with some humans in both the conflict and in getting used to this world in general.

    GI Joe
Tech has been amped up in this world, and people are a bit uncertain, although most trust the Autobots. Nevertheless, Cobra, a ruthless terrorist organization determined to the rule the world, crops up, utilizing plans and tech derived from Decepticons. GI Joe is a military task force put together to put a stop to them.

He-Man & the Masters of the Universe
I originally thought of having this have a similar plot to Thor and the Masters of the Universe movie from the 80’s, but I thought that might be treading on ground too similar to the Transformers movie we have, with high-tech aliens being aided in a conflict by regular humans. So instead, this’ll be taking place mostly on the Planet of Eternia, with Greyskull and Snake Mountain being warring factions. Skeletor and his forces from Snake Mountain nearly conquer the kingdom of Greyskull until the young son, Prince Adam, happens upon an ancient, magical sword and becomes a warrior known as He-Man, driving Skeletor away. From there, it’s pretty much a story about Prince Adam growing into the use of this power, and how he can use it to protect others and stop Skeletor from gaining power to conquer Eternia, and perhaps, even the universe.

    Inspector Gadget
Given the ever-growing presence of high-tech on this Earth, a government scientist is developing a project to create a highly-advanced cyborg that can house many different functions. However, the scientist ends up nearly killed and the plans are stolen by a rogue terrorist organization known as MAD, looking to up their game and prove themselves as higher players compared to the likes of COBRA. Nevertheless, the scientist is rebuilt and with what they still have, becomes an international detective. However, he is faulty, for multiple reasons, and is aided by a young agent named Penny, who also happens to be his niece, as well as her dog, Brain. She’s closer in age to Tom Holland’s Spider-Man than a 10-year-old or whatever age Penny is supposed to be in the original.

    Revolution: Unite for the Universe
Skeletor searches the universe for even greater weapons and sources of energy, and happens upon Earth and the Decepticons. The two groups seem to agree that combining their forces together will make for a powerful alliance, if a fair weather one ultimately. The Decepticon/Snake Mountain Alliance proves to be too much for a team up of GI Joe, Inspector Gadget, and even the AutoBots to deal with, but eventually He-Man and the forces of Greyskull soon follow. Skeletor and the Decepticons would eventually be defeated, of course, but the end would hint towards an even greater power to come, that, of course (again “of course”, it seems), being Unicron.

ThunderCats would be very early Phase 2, MASK and She-Ra spin-off from GI Joe and He-Man, TMNT and Voltron eventually come in. A lot of other obscure/semi-obscure stuff to mess around with. Wondering if Danger Mouse, Count Duckula, and Banana Man would be too ridiculous to include or if Inspector Gadget and this whole thing already are ridiculous.
I hope to eventually get Star Trek into Pop Culture Clash, but I dunno how many people these days are as into Star Trek. But we shall see.

Then again, I plan way too ahead for these in general, perhaps. I got "projected" lists for PCC, the Nintendo/Smash Cinematic Universe one, and the Smash of Another Universe one, which isn't even my thread. Oh dear.

Thinking other thoughts on Pop Culture Clash...Clippy is in Smash of Another Universe, and Hatsune Miku has been nominated, both somewhat under technicalities, but if they were in Pop Culture Clash, they'd most likely be under the "Miscellaneous" section. Classifications can differ in weird ways under different categorization areas. Or however I wanna phrase it.

I'm a Star Trek fan. I think a Trek character would be cool. DS9 is my favorite but a Trek character should probably be like, Kirk or Picard.
I have half-baked versions of popular fictional universes somewhat written out in scattered notes. The TL;DR is a Marvel and DC where characters are allowed to age, most of their crossover material exists more regularly in their universes (not Marvel and DC being the same world, but, like, Marvel has Godzilla, the Transformers, select Disney properties, etc. as a regular feature, DC has He-Man, various Cartoon Network/Hanna-Barbera/other WB properties, etc.), a Smash universe that tries its best not to be a cluster**** and involves everything in Smash and every other video game I can connect into it, a horror universe, and a TMNT/Power Rangers/Image Comics universe that also includes some other wacky stuff and is basically a super 80's/90's world that sometimes runs into the 2000's.
Late night: give me something pop cultural (movie, game, TV show, comic, book, song, etc.) and I'll briefly describe an alternate history version of it (made up by me).

Wario Wario Wario Wario Wario Wario KFC: Colonel Sanders instead creates a restaurant that serves versions of Thanksgiving food year round, with turkey instead of chicken. It's less successful, though it still has its niche, and Popeye's eventually is the most known fried chicken restaurant in this universe. Popeye is more generally culturally relevant, in the sense of how a mascot will usually be around for a while, though it's in different ways than how he could or would be relevant if he's only primarily known as a cartoon/comics character.

From Twitter, my altered versions of a few series, as well as what might change alongside them. These may vary in plausibility.

Daffy Duck retains his earlier manic personality for a few more shorts, and the reverberating wave leads to Bugs Bunny not existing, and Daffy being their top cartoon star. It's what Daffy wanted in canon, in a way. As a side result, Disney ramps up their marketing for their Duck characters, leading them to not only be heavily popular in Europe, but basically the most popular comics in America, as well, even outpacing Marvel and DC. (Although this early of butterflies probably has them still being called "Timely/Atlas Comics" and "National Publications" or what have you.) Comics are seen as a medium that goes hand in hand with cartoons, leading it to different associations in the cultural zeitgest. We do not see Watchmen or The Dark Knight Returns, but we do see greater success for Howard the Duck, as well as David Lynch's Woody Woodpecker.

2 in the AM PM gets picked up earlier on as an [adult swim] show. Along with altered versions of Problem Solverz and King Star King, they end up leading [adult swim] on an altered path. Due to the Butterfly Effect, Rick and Morty ends up on FX alongside a Deadpool show. Due to shake-ups w/several shows, Adventure Time ends up on Nick and Fanboy & Chum-Chum, somehow, ends up on CN. Adventure Time gets 1 or 2 seasons, but unfortunately falls to the SpongeBob curse. Fanboy & Chum-Chum becomes this timeline's version of Teen Titans Go. However, due to already having a hyperactive superhero comedy, DC Nation generally continues with different experiments in DC animation, and there's a broader variety in that regard. CN becomes more regarded for action shows, while Nick is more known for comedy, even w/Avatar: the Last Airbender. More on AM PM: similar show in tone, w/more mild swearing/adult themes. It's retooled from the short, Mordecai & Rigby working at a gas station instead of a park, with a lot of characters coming in and out of their lives, either through the job or their outside social lives.

Shortly after Undertale's Kickstarter funding and the early signs of a passionate fanbase, Toby Fox gains the notice of Microsoft, and Undertale ends up under their umbrella, ending up as a multi-million dollar seller with more spin-off titles. This makes it essentially swap positions with Minecraft, which is still "indie" in this world. People are excited when Frisk ends up in Smash, but almost as excited when Steve is a Mii Swordsman. Indie RPGs generally gain an even bigger boost from this, mostly because companies see $$$, but it does give some creators greater success and exposure. Nintendo is still slightly behind the times, but is angling for an official Western release of Mother 3 in early 2022.
My other creation thread ideas so far besides Pop Culture Clash: Nintendo/Smash Cinematic Universe, Advertising Mascots Fighting Game, Amalgam Comics [mentioned previously], Nintendo VS Everyone Else [perhaps too similar to other ones]
My other idea for a creation thread would be "Remake Amalgam Comics!", the brief 90's thing where Marvel and DC combined their characters/universes. But that's pretty off of the other ones (making hypothetical comics ideas instead of game ones), and I dunno how many are as interested in comics here.
I don't wanna concentrate on it until after the "Smash of Another Universe" one is completely finished, but I might make my own big creation thread. It'll have a pretty broad subject matter, I can say that. If anyone's reading/interested, anyways.
