I'm starting to think that three installments is/should be the maximum life of a video game series' formula. It doesn't matter if the installments are released annually or once-a-gen; once you go beyond three installments, sticking on a "sequel gimmick" isn't enough at that point and the devs really need to rethink the series.
I'm playing the VB games in an emulator that makes them look purplish-grey, but even then I think I've become very attentive to red objects during this masochistic experiment.
