playing friendlies slows down the tourney, but you can usually get some in (it's hard though)
i'm assuming you're a melee player so there's no pools
the best is to just bring your own setup if you want to play friendlies, and not enter the tournament. if you're quiet you might not even have to pay the venue fee.
