Toad/Captain Toad (are they the same Toad?) would definitely be the next in line instead of Nabbit. Unfortunately, he may be stay stuck in Peach's moveset forever. I think the consensus was that Pauline had more merit than Nabbit to get into Smash, not that she should be in Smash.

I'm cautiously optimistic he'll be a DLC fighter. I fully expected him and Max Brass (before he was fully revealed) to be DLC/secret fighters prior to launch.
