To be fair, Shantae is right there alongside Shovel Knight in terms of possible indie characters. Especially since she has been around longer abd I see just as many people ask for her in comparison to Shovel Knight.

It say it to rep different franchises and because we have seen it with Mega-Man and Ryu for Capcom. Franchises like Streets of Rage, Phantasy Star, Golden Axe, Yakuza, Shenmue, Sakura Wars, and Valkyria Chronices could easily fit. Especially since a good chunk of them is still used on Nintendo.
