I don't think it's to show a character is OP, just unique. It wouldn't be a good demonstration if the character wasn't performing moves and getting curb stomped.

I really wish we got DLC assists- some matches I play with assists and pokeballs as the only items and it'd be cool to have seen the creeper as an assist. I feel like if Steve had been in the base roster that we would have got a Creeper assist. Oh well. That's just a silly nitpick with all DLC characters, but they already do so much for each pack and most players don't care about assists.

I'd say their newer series (Splatoon, ARMS) are doing pretty good establishing important characters in-universe that are both diverse but also fun and lovable.

I think it just depends on things behind the scenes and how things fall into place. ARMS and Splatoon started with placeholder characters (Nintendo characters with stretchy fist guns and blocks of tofu/rabbits, respectively.) So a game like that would be harder to pick a character from early on...

Tbf you are comparing something that was surprising and more international with something with a more national focus that has been beaten to death for quite a while discussion wise at least.

I think Minecrafts popularity and importance to modern gaming is often understated especially in Smash speculation circles. Really happy to see a new art style added to smash as well.
