I have done some testing, as I found not beeing able to L cancel frustrating (I know its been known for quite awhile now) so I went into training mode, and started to test if 'L' wasn't the only way to cancel.
so I knee'd>endured lag and started mashing buttons like crazy, to see if I could see a difference in the lag.
I did this alot of times, and to my amazement sometimes it really looked like the lag time reduced.

This may be just my imagination, but could this be something to look into?
