It's more about your placing than timing. With practice you will know whether you can spike your opoonent when you are in the chaingrab. Do it too close to the ledge and you might throw them away too far and you can't reach. Throw them too far off the ledge and they will land on stage or grab...

Just so you know, there are people who still plays Melee casually up to this date.
