    Mario Controller Setup

Hey all! I'm trying to dig a little deeper and get more out of my plumber. I have had a couple people mention alternate control schemes, like perhaps mapping Special to the C-Stick, or Shield to X/Y. Other Marios, what's your setup and why? Right now, all I do is turn off Tap Jump.

    PM New WiFi servers?

Hi all, I THINK I just signed up to the new Wii DNS server (this: http://forum.wii-homebrew.com/board42-kreativitaet/mkw-server-project-english/51254-own-servers/) does anyone know if/when we'll be able to use it to play other people in PM, or will it still require friend codes? Thanks!

    Boston, MA SSBM

I'm in Somerville myself (basically Boston) and am going to be hitting up Game Over, too. (Not tonight though)

Does it have to be CRTs?

The lag does come from the monitor doing the conversion, you're right. Ideally, the converter will do the conversion processing, but whether it does the downsampling/upconversion or the monitor does is kind of a crapshoot (i.e. I don't think the resources exist to identify such a thing). Hence...

Does it have to be CRTs?

This is actually a great resource explaining how/why input lag occurs and how the GCube/Wii can be optimized for a non-CRT display if necessary: http://www.reddit.com/r/smashbros/wiki/lag

Does it have to be CRTs?

Yes. While YPbPr to HDMI adapters do exist, they're not necessarily the best option if you're looking to signal convert. However, you'd be hard pressed to find even 2014 monitors (not TVs) that don't have a VGA input, which is still an analog input type. As for composite (Gcube/Wii) to VGA...

    Mario's Combos

IMO, Mario's nair can be a great way to start combos once the opponent is at or above 20%. With the right momentum, his nair can take a horizontal trajectory that sends the opponent in a fairly predictable direction, barring SDI. Leaping forward just as you start nair means you can land...

Does it have to be CRTs?

Really, dude? You didn't consider that maybe I posed it as an unbiased prompt to gauge community opinions/responses without tossing a bunch of technical jargon in the way? Assumptions, man. For the record, I understand plenty and more about input lag, response time, refresh rates, backlight...

Does it have to be CRTs?

True! Where are you finding CRTs at that price, though?

[Nov 4, 2014] Game Over - TUESDAY NIGHT - Weekly Melee Tournament (Somerville, MA)

I probably can't make it tomorrow night (tons o' work), but will I need anything besides a controller?

Does it have to be CRTs?

YPbPr to HDMI adapters do exist, though.

Does it have to be CRTs?

I'm a TV reviewer by trade, and have noticed the severe prevalence of CRT-style TVs at Smash events and tournies. I know the reasoning for this is that CRTs have much less input lag than circa 2003-2006 LCD TVs, but is it really still so notable even against modern gaming monitors and the like...

[Nov 4, 2014] Game Over - TUESDAY NIGHT - Weekly Melee Tournament (Somerville, MA)

Is it happening at East End Grille this Tuesday, the 29th? Anywhere to register online?

    Greetings from Somerville!

Hey everyone, Been a big fan of Smash since 64, and searching for tournaments in the Boston area brought me here. I've only recently begun to understand the scope and depth of this series' legacy, and I am excited to take a few steps into the competitive sphere. I main Mario in both Melee and...
