VBI does work, but from my experiences using AXNextFrame has a much lower chance of intermittent freezing occuring, especially in single player modes. I used to leave it on VBI but have switched to AXNextFrame and it's been better since.

This is happening to my setup too, and have noticed this occuring since 3.5. I'm using USB Loader GX with Hooktype AXNextFrame.
