Sm4sh Matchups: Yoshi (W.I.P.)

Game Versions
Smash 3DS, Smash Wii U
Hey! It seems you've clicked on my guide. Thanks! As you can probably see, this guide will explain my opinion on Yoshi's matchups in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS. Feel free to give feedback, as most of these will just be general tips, unless it's a matchup I truly know. Without further a do, these are Yoshi's Sm4sh matchups.

***I am going to update these as most of these are still my opinions from last year or so***

:4yoshi:vs:4mario:
Yoshi vs Mario:

Character Archetype: ALL-ROUNDER
Match-up - 5 ~ 5
Explanation: Mario is considered as the perfect all-rounder, he has options for every situation in the game. It's difficult to outmatch Mario since he has no glaring weaknesses, but he also has no big strengths. Mario's greatest advantage is that he can combo very well, so our main objective is to abuse our double jump armor to break out of Mario's strings and combos. An easy-bake Mario combo starter is down throw, but if he does anything besides up-b immediately, we can break out instantly using our double jump.

:4yoshi:vs:4luigi:
Yoshi vs Luigi:

Character Archetype: HALF-GRAPPLER
Match-up - 5.5 ~ 4.5
Explanation: Like his brother, Luigi has many reliably effective combos and set-ups, most of which comes out of his down throw. Luigi has more kill power than Mario, but in exchange for less mobility, being one of the slowest in the game. That being said, that means Luigi has very poor approaching abilities. Use this to your advantage by spacing him with eggs. His recovery is also among the slowest in the game, meaning it's very slow and punishable. His safest option is to be directly underneath the ledge and snap to it with his up-b, but even that isn't very safe. Keep him at a distance and punish his slow and linear recovery.

:4yoshi:vs:4peach:
Yoshi vs Peach:

Character Archetype: MIX-UP / HEAVY PRESSURE
Match-up - 5.5 ~ 4.5
Explanation: The majority of this match-up depends on how much technical skill the Peach player has. More avid Peach players will be floating around more often. Regardless, Egg Throw is you best friend in this match-up. Egg Throw has more priority than the majority of Peach's moveset. Since Peach cannot airdodge while she is floating, feel free to up-air or forward-air her since those moves have more range than her aerials.

:4yoshi:vs:4bowser:
Yoshi vs Bowser:

Character Archetype: GRAPPLER / BAIT + PUNISH
Match-up - 6 ~ 4
Explanation: This match-up is more of one of the easier match-ups for Yoshi. Bowser has a very large hurtbox, so many moves don't have to be really accurate as compared to characters like Pikachu. Although his overall movement has been buffed in Smash 4, it's still fairly slow, and Yoshi easily outmatches Bowser. While most of his attacks are slow, that does not mean all of them are. His tilts are very fast compared to his other attacks and they do hit fairly hard, but getting hit by any move in Bowser's moveset is gonna hurt. If you notice the Bowser try to use Side-B a lot, wall them out with eggs. If they land with an aerial Side-B, Bowser will suffer from absolutely no landing lag, so be wary of that. Bowser's vertical recovery and off-stage game are relatively poor; so take advantage of the chances given in the openings in your opponent's gameplay.

:4yoshi:vs:4yoshi:
Yoshi vs Yoshi:

Character Archetype: ALL-ROUNDER / RUSHDOWN
Match-up - DITTO
Explanation: This is a mirror match, commonly known as a ditto. The player who can utilize Yoshi's skills more effectively will win. Egg Lay, his neutral special, is a great command-grab and is arguably his best move, as it completely immobilizes your opponent, allowing you to deal free damage. Egg Throw, his up-special, is a great spacing tool. Egg Roll, his side-special, has surprisingly high priority. It has won't go over the ledge if you don't press in any direction, which can potentially create mindgames on stages like Smashville. Yoshi Bomb, his down-special, does a lot of shield damage and can kill around 110% depending on the weight of the opponent and how much rage you have. Yoshi's up-tilt is arguably his best combo starter, as it can lead into many of his moves. Yoshi's up-air is one of his strongest kill moves, which can K.O. earlier than most of his moves. His down-air is the most damaging aerial in the game, dealing over 30% assuming all hits connect. Yoshi's n-air is considered as the best sex kick in the game and, along with his up-tilt, can lead into many of his combos or can edgeguard opponents who aren't good at recovering back on-stage. His forward-air is relatively strong and has meteor smashing abilities at Yoshi's nose; and his back-air is a good spacing tool. Yoshi's mid-air jump is the highest in the entire game and is supported with heavy-armor, allowing Yoshi to escape most combos at early percents. In order to win this match-up, it is recommended that you stay defensive and on the same level or below your opponent. Yoshi's playstyle matches that of a rushdown character, so Yoshi players would look for openings to go on the offensive. So look for an opening after they attack you by playing more defensively. Use Egg Throw to keep your opponent at bay and it's okay to use your shield a lot since you don't have to worry about getting grabbed, as Yoshi's grab game is pretty bad; though watch out for the command-grab. Up-Smash-Out-of-Shield is also good in this match-up as Up-Smash is very fast and has more priority than his other moves.

Character Archetype: GLASS CANNON / PRECISION
Match-up - 6 ~ 4
Explanation:

:4yoshi:vs:4sheik:
Yoshi vs Sheik:

Character Archetype: ZONE-BREAKER / RUSHDOWN
Match-up - 4.5 ~ 5.5
Explanation: I'm still a bit iffy on this one. Sheik would've had an advantage over Yoshi because of her amazing combos and set-ups. But after patch 1.1.5, most of those combos and set-ups have been patched out, leaving one of the few options Sheik has left being to land a raw kill move, which would be very difficult to do in high to top level competition. After the nerfs, Yoshi and a lot of other characters have an easier time against her. However, Sheik is still a really strong character. Her Needles are very quick, although its range was nerfed in 1.1.5. Her recovery is also superb, with the combination of her new down-special, Bouncing Fish, and her up-special, Vanish. But since it's now harder for Sheik to net KOs, her opponents are free to be a bit more aggressive against her. At early percents, it's best to space out Sheik using Egg Throw, as this is when Sheik's combos still are effective. When she's recovering from afar, try to punish between after the end of Bouncing Fish and before the start of Vanish; but when you see Sheik's rising animation for Vanish, it would be best to get back on-stage as it's hard to punish Vanish after Sheik disappears. Since Sheik is also an offensive-type character, play defensively against her.

Match-up - 5.5 ~ 4.5
Explanation:

:4yoshi:vs:4ness:
Yoshi vs Ness:

Character Archetype: MIX-UP / HALF-GRAPPLER
Match-up - 5.5 ~ 4.5
Explanation: Ness possess both a strong ground game and air game. He has decent combos out of his down throw and his back throw has the most knockback of any back throw in every game, making it an ideal KOing option. His biggest weakness, however, is his recovery. There are so many ways of intercepting Ness's recovery. You can hit yourself with the PK Thunder itself before it hits Ness, you can spike him in the middle of it, and if you're confident in your teching skills, get hit by Ness and tech the stage, as hitting someone with it will truncate Ness's recovery by about half. Your main goal is to get Ness off-stage and force him to use PK Thunder.
