Fear The Dank King

Game Versions
Smash 3DS
Who Is King Dedede?
King Dedede is a recurring character, hailing from the Kirby franchise all the way from Kirby's Dream Land in 1991. He made his first appearance in Brawl, where he was generally considered high-tier. In Smash 4, however, many of those buffs were removed and he has been mostly pushed to the corner, shoved in the same rejects category that befell Olimar, Meta Knight, Falco, Mr. Game & Watch, and now the Dank King himself. That's what needs to change. Dedede is a problem character for many players, simply because they don't know his moves well or how he fights. While he's not as underrated as Meta Knight, he is most certainly walked over a lot. If you're here, that means you're one of the few that hasn't. Congratulations!

Why King Dedede?
Here is where I really get into my Dedede clothes. As stated above, Dedede is a problem character for many. I use that to my advantage, as I can usually play without the opponent having a whole lot of prior knowledge on the matchup. That being said, Dedede has a funky playstyle, and funky not really in a good way. His attacks are split into two groups, the fast ones and the slow ones. There is no in-between. The key is knowing when to switch between the two. I'll go into more depth on his moveset below.

Moves and Physics
King Dedede is classified as a Super Heavyweight, being the second or third heaviest character. He also has the second highest fastfall speed, behind Fox, as well as one of the slowest run/walk speeds. He has six jumps, none of which go all that high, but has a great recovery to make up for it.

Jab Combo: Two hits with your hammer before spinning it around in front of you. Does about 16 damage, one of his better moves.
Forward Tilt: Spins his hammer 4 times in front of him. A fast move, does 9-10 damage.
Down Tilt: Roll forward. A quick move, and does 10 damage. Can be chained together against some characters.
Up Tilt: Swing your arm over your head to attack. Does around 12 damage, not very practical.
Forward Smash: The most powerful forward smash in the game, it starts to kill in the 30-40% range. Can kill earlier depending on the character and percent. However, it's rendered almost useless do to the incredible lag on it. I only use it in team battles or playing against Filthy Casuals. Does 24-33 damage.
Down Smash: My most abused move. Dedede spins his hammer around himself in a full circle. A great roll punisher, and his fastest smash attack. 14-19 damage.
Up Smash: Bring your hammer over your head to attack. A great anti-air move, and does the same damage as down smash.
Neutral Air: A full-body attack. One of Dedede's few moves that can't launch, but it makes up for it in speed and power, doing 10 damage and having high priority.
Forward Air: A hammer swing in front. 12 damage, impractical on the stage, but a great offstage gimping tool. This DESTROYS the PSI kids.
Back Air: A more powerful, slightly slower forward air. Makes up for that in a higher launch, as well as a VERY satisfying kill. 16 damage.
Up Air: Twirl your hammer above your head to attack. A good kill move, though sometimes hard to land. 9-11 damage.
Down Air: One of Dedede's most impractical moves, almost as bad as forward smash. He jabs his hammer downwards, but it's slow. Has a meteor smash, though. 14-15 damage.
Dash Attack: Belly-flop in front of you. Hand to land because of its stupidly long startup time, but makes for a hilarious kill if it connects.
Forward Throw: Strike with your hammer to send the opponent flying forward. Not a combo throw. 10 damage.
Down Throw: Slam the opponent into the ground. Combos into forward air at most percents. His main combo throw, 6-7 damage.
Up Throw: Throw the opponent into the air. Combos into up air, but not at high enough percents to kill anyone. 8 damage.
Back Throw: Same as forward throw, but throws them backwards. 10 damage.
Standard Special: Dedede swallows the opponent, then you have restricted movement for a few seconds until you either spit them out or they break free themselves. Makes for one hell of a kill if you swallow a ledgeguarding foe and spit them out underneath the stage.
Side Special: Dedede chucks a Gordo forward. A powerful projectile with decent launch, and the angle of the hit can be changed for ledgeguarding. However, any hitbox can reflect it back-- be careful!
Up Special: Dedede leaps into the air and comes crashing down. Can kill if you sweetspot it right, but that's very hard to do. Can also bury opponents or spike them on the ground and midair respectively.
Down Special: Dedede begins charging up a powerful hit from his hammer. Very impractical, as it's hard to land, easy to dodge, and takes a while to charge. Again, only use in team battles or fighting Filthy Casuals. Not one of his better moves.

Playstyles and Strategies
One of Dedede's best combos is down-throw into forward air or neutral air. A staple combo at the beginning of the game. You can also use Gordos for damage, but it's advisable to only use the in midair. Otherwise, they're reflected too easily. Zoning and pressuring with forward air works, as well as abusing Dedede's grabs. He has one of the best sets of grabs, and a great grab range. Given his crappy jump height, it's super easy to shorthop into aerials. Offledge gimping works wonders, if they're trying to get back on the ledge at a diagonal angle, just run straight off the ledge into forward air! It works almost every time. Dedede has one of the best ledgeguarding and edgeguarding games out there, and as such, he doesn't do good against stage-controlling characters. It's important to find out what playstyle suits you, and play from there.

Incomplete, so very sparce with the info.

Calling your characters moveset "Funky in a bad way" is probably not a good way to start.

When people see "Dank King", Ganondorf comes to mind. Not King Dedede.
