Official Next Smash - Speculation & Discussion Thread

I actually believe Pokémon is a very good example of how momentum can still potentially be kept up even if it doesn't necessarily keep everything people want. An example that Smash could very much follow in the footsteps of. ...well, for the most part, because I think Sword and Shield's...

Official Next Smash - Speculation & Discussion Thread

Maybe I'm in the minority, but the white outlines might've been a harmless inclusion if they used it right. The problem was that they introduced it during a time when they were implementing an awful, deliberately choppy animation style. There was not really a good reason to have that few...

As much as I'd like another Kirby director to get the reigns to Smash, the only way I would fully accept Kumazaki doing so is if he can make a game that somehow proves him worthy of passing the torch. And no, Fighters 2 absolutely does not count.

It's meant to be an homage to the way Kirby traditionally inhaled up to Super Star. Just like over 80% of the Kirby homages in Smash are.

Oh no. I just noticed: are we actually 5 months away from the ending point of the Smash DLC being 3 years ago? But that means... we've gone without Smash inclusions for almost as long as we've been in that DLC cycle! That's HORRIFYING!

Something else just occurred to me... speculation may have technically been damaged by Sakurai's one E3 2018 remark, directly telling us he hoped to not raise our expectations for newcomers in Ultimate.

Not to mention how LONG a cycle the DLC ended up becoming. A three-year cycle, which is basically six times the span of what the base game's release window of 8 months was. Even with the handful of first-party DLC inclusions, there simply wasn't enough of those to cancel out the imbalance...

On the topic of pushing for a priority Zelda newcomer... well, I may not have a horse in this race, but I must object to the idea. On paper, the notion of keeping a top spot sound fine and dandy, until it doesn't happen for over a decade and shows no sign of improving. I won't go too far into my...

I can understand that mentality. I think it would be way easier to tolerate if there were more means to have costumes for the avatar fighters, but eight options just aren't enough, especially when the first two are typically the default skins. Inkling suffers the worst from this problem, though...

I recall hearing somewhere that Wario was essentially made in relation to the original team not really liking to be tethered to making Mario titles. If true, it could mean the separation of Wario and Mario's franchises is an intentional point of reference.

"Recent stuff" is basically the bulk of what Smash typically promotes nowadays. You can point to as many exceptions as you'd like, there's usually a couple reasons given for this to be the case. Kirby's the main outlier, where a reasonable excuse was hardly made. A resurging marketed puffball...

That's not supposed to be the main argument as to why it sold. It should be a testament to the quality of the game itself, which for the most part is and was always pretty high.

I need to play devil's advocate here: I don't think it's a good idea to specifically use the underselling of the Wii U to justify Deluxe's main selling point. MK8 did well on its own platform, for all that meant at the time.

I kinda think Marx has higher potential than Galacta Knight. Beyond being prime echo material, Galacta doesn't have all much to show for the hype culture around him. Marx definitely has quite strong competition within Kirby inclusions beyond that, though. I'll admit, while I would've liked to...

I want to remain somewhat reserved for Brawl's bias, despite some early red flags. HAL made a very smart move releasing Super Star Ultra the same year Brawl did, which allowed them to capitalize on all the new publicity Super Star got. This was eventually what relaunched the series into the RtDL...
