Who says Assist Trophies have no chance?

I think Assist Trophy characters still have a chance of becoming Playable DLC Characters. Being an Assist Trophy may even help their chances since they already have in game models, and a few of them already have hit boxes. This thread is dedicated to discussing the possibilities of current Assist Trophy characters becoming full fledged characters. Why not start with one of the most recognizable and controversial Assists, Waluigi.

Here is how I could picture Waluigi working in the game. He would mainly be based around the Spin-Off Mario games, though he would probably still be classified as a Wario character. He would hold a tennis racket by default. He would be a balanced mix between power of Wario, and the unpredictability of Luigi.
Item Box- Waluigi raises a Mario Kart Item Box over his head and receives a random Mario Kart Item. Most of them are normal Smash Items, but some are original and are exclusive to Waluigi. Depending on how long Waluigi refrains from doing the attack, and his current performance in combat (points, stocks), certain items spawn more often than others. Either way, he needs to wait 10 seconds before performing the attack again. A strong hit cancels the attack and makes the item drop on the ground for anyone to use. Here are some items that Waluigi could get, and their rarity.
-Mushroom (Common): Gives Waluigi a one time boost attack.
-Green Shell (Common)
-Banana Peel (Common)
-Red Shell (Fairly Rare): Works like it does in Melee.
-Fire Flower (Fairly Rare)
-Bob-omb (Rare)
-Bullet Bill (Rare)
-Spiny Shell (Rare)
-Star (Extremely Rare)
-Lightning Bolt (Extremely Rare)
Custom 1- Boom Box:The attack takes longer to pull off, and does major self inflicted damage to Waluigi if he is interrupted (though it also damages any close by enemies if it fails). The items he spawns this time are always explosives, and range across different series.
-Deku Nut (Common)
-Bob-Omb (Common)
-Gooey Bomb (Common)
-Bombchu (Fairly Rare)
-Blast Box (Fairly Rare)
-Motion-Sensor Bomb (Fairly Rare)
-Steel Diver (Rare)
-Spiny Shell (Rare)
-Pow Block (Rare)
-Smart Bomb (Extremely Rare)
-X-Bomb (Extremely Rare)
-Hocotate Ship (Extremely Rare)
Custom 2- Picnic Basket: Is quicker, but has a less variety of items. Healing items take a moment of cool down for Waluigi to eat.
-Food (Common)
-Turnip (Common)
-Deku Nut (Rare)
-Super Spicy Curry (Rare)
-Super Mushroom (Extremely Rare)
-Maxim Tomato (Extremely Rare)

Whirluigi: Waluigi spins around with his Tennis Racket. It can reflect projectiles, and send opponents flying if it hits. It has a short, but significant, cool down if it misses.
Custom 1- Topspin Shot: A faster, but weaker version of the default.
Custom 2- Slice Shot: A slower, but more powerful version of the default.

Twist Dunk: Waluigi twirls up into the air a short distance, before swimming through the air horizontally with a basketball in hand. After a while, or if B is pressed again, Waluigi will slam dunk the basketball directly below him, before falling to the ground.
Custom 1: Air Dunk: No initial twirl, but the swimming through the air is more controllable.
Custom 2: Swimming Return: More distance and speed on both recoveries, but no basketball.

Making a Racket: Works like his Assist Trophy attack. Buries enemies in the ground, and spikes enemies in the air.
Custom 1- Racket Power: Works more like Donkey Kong's Down Special, adding more launching power to his stomps, though in a smaller radius.
Custom 2- Rising Racket: Hits can combo up enemies. Waluigi ascends upward while performing the attack.

Destruction Dance: Waluigi shows off his dancing skills as everything explodes around him. DDR arrows show up, and pressing each direction in time will make the attack more effective. It will initially start with Bob-ombs spawning like it is sudden death, but doing good with the prompts will also add X-Bomb and Smart Bomb explosions.

I'm all for Waluigi for Smash and everything....but that Neutral Special seems WAY to OP.

Most if the time it would only spawn the Common Items. It's only after waiting a long time that there is a chance of the other items, and the timer resets when the move is done.

It would be too much work for them to remove the codings for each AT and make them as their own separate characters (with obviously more high quality textures). Though it wouldn't be TOO weird for that AT to fight along his old self since we do have two Marios, two Zeldas, two Links, and two Samuses coexisting in the game as their own fighters. Then there's Riki being both an Assist and a great part of Shulk's Final Smash (which would also a raise a few eyebrows).

If Sakurai wanted the ATs to be playable, he would've made them playable, but he didn't. That is why they are ATs. Therefore, I believe they have no chance.

Yes, Masahiro Sakurai never ever wants Magnus of Phosphura to be playable. Makes tons of sense.

In all seriousness, if you really think about it, AT's, specifically the ones that work and look more like fighters (Dillon, Dark Samus, Takamaru, etc), are probably early ideas of what they would have been like playable. They were cut because of time restraints because Salurai decided he wanted them in more, not that he didn't want them at all. If a character that is an assist is popular enough, there is no reason they can't become a character.

Though it all goes down to if it's worth the time and resources to work on such a progress since some people (keyword some) would view that as nothing more than a cop out. If they were willing to go through that process, the real question is: How many AT's should be promoted (which would also be a problem since there will be an issue over "X was chosen over X and they are terrible choices"). You know how crazy the Smash fanbase is when it comes to who they consider worthy of being "Smash worthy" and complaining over the simplest details.

Another thing to thing about is that what if the fans wanted a more original character as DLC instead of giving certain assists that "playable promotion". There will be plenty of Captain Toad fans that will be upset if Waluigi gets to be the next Mario DLC over him. Then one should consider if Dillon's inclusion would make people whine over his inclusion and that they would prefer the Inklings instead.

Overall, this would be a move that I wouldn't mind Sakurai and his team to do, though it could might as well cause some heavy division in the fanbase (Which is why I've always compared them with the Sonic fanbase to begin with). Maybe we'll wait and see if there's any more clues before we over think about this situation.

If ATs are added as DLC, they could always do something like add a special effect to the AT versions if the playable versions are on the field - like, Waluigi is currently in play, so when someone grabs an AT and Waluigi comes out, a version of Waluigi with a purple glow to indicate it as a "fake" Waluigi appears instead. Or they could go the R.O.B. in SSE route and give the playable version a visually distinct model.

I'm all for this idea! I mean, Little Mac got in when he was a assist trophy prior so why don't the other trophies get a shot at the golden trophy slot?

Also, Btw, Really would love Lyndis to be playable and all of my dreams would be complete
