GAMEPLAY
(This section may be outdated or incomplete!)
Changed mechanics:
- Random tripping has been removed; tripping induced by certain moves, items or summoned characters can still happen
- Game speed between Melee and Brawl
- Character customization (to an unknown extent) available on the 3DS version and transferable to the Wii U version.
- The characters' launch trails when attacked depend on who hit them, being red if hit by player 1 or green if hit by player 4. Sakurai stated this new mechanic makes it easier to know who gets the KO point.
- Character moves have slashing effects that allow players to see the area where the attack hits.
- New mechanics for grabbing edges. You cannot stop other players from grabbing the edge by grabbing it, air time and accumulated damage will determine the invincibility time on the edge and grab controls will no longer be affected by whether you have above or below 100% damage. Confirmed on the January 22nd, 2014 daily picture.
- Tether recoveries use the new mechanics for edge grabbing.
- Swimming is ambiguously back as the results screen indicates its presence, however characters pass through the water on the Tortimer's Island stage.
- During a dash, it's possible to use a forward attack or a forward Smash attack by turning into the opposite direction and immediately use the desired move.
- During timed matches, whenever the timer is below 10 seconds remaining, Star KOs and Screen KOs stop happening.

Returning mechanics:
- Footstool jumping (seems to be known as Stepping Stone Jump now)
- Final Smashes
- Multiple, non-directional air dodges like Brawl (subject to change)
- Multiple taunts
- Pivot grabs [GIF]
- Aerial clashes [GIF]
- Short hops
- Three taunts per character
- Wall jumping
- Wall clinging (characters who posses this ability: Sheik, Greninja)

Home-Run Contest
Home-Run Contest returns from Melee and Brawl. Like before, the objective is to launch Sandbag as far as possible. Exclusive to the Wii U version is the option to play with up to 4 players competitively or with 2 players cooperatively.

Online
Online play returns with changes. Players can still choose on playing with friends registered on their consoles or against random players online. When playing "With Friends", the rules can be customized at will. When playing "With Anyone", players can choose between "For Fun", which allows choosing any stage except Final Destination and items are on; or "For Glory" which has items off and only allows playing on Final Destination and any of the Final Destination forms of other stages. "For Glory" also has an option to plays 1 vs 1 matches.

Spectator mode returns, seemingly unchanged from Brawl. Here, players watch an online match, betting coins on a possible winner.

Trophy Rush
A new mini-game to obtain Trophies like the Lottery in Melee and Coin Launcher in Brawl. The player selects a character and must break falling objects on a platform. Details are currently unknown.

Target Blast
A new mini-game where the player must hit a bomb with and launch it, similar to Home-Run Contest. When hitting the bomb for the first time, a timer begins counting down and once it's over, the bomb explodes. The objective is to destroy as many targets as possible. The targets are inside a structure that can be destroyed with the bomb. Its mechanics are similar to other games such as Crush the Castle or Angry Birds.
The player is given two rounds and on the Wii U version, the second round has a bigger bomb with heavier weight and larger blast radius. The Wii U version also has more stages to choose from.

Multi-Man Smash
Returning from previous Smash games, Multi-Man Smash has the player fight against hordes of foes. The opponents this time are Mii Fighters. There are six variants with different objectives:
- 10-Man Smash: defeat 10 enemies.
- 100-Man Smash: defeat 100 enemies.
- 3-minute Smash: survive for 3 minutes.
- Rival Smash: KO more opponents than a CPU player before being KO'd.
- Endless Smash: survive as long as possible.
- Cruel Smash: same as Endless Smash, with extremely powerful foes.

On the Wii U version, this mode can be played with up to 4 players.

Classic
Returning from previous titles, Classic mode has been reworked. The difficulty system is now inspired by Kid Icarus: Uprising, in which the player spends currency to raise the difficulty level from 2.0 to 9.0. The higher it is, the better rewards. Coins can also be spent to reduce the difficulty level from 2.0 to 0.0.
On the 3DS version, the player must advance through a map with several battle and bonus spots. Paths are branched, allowing the player to choose the next opponent. Scattered through the map, there are rewards such as coins or trophies.
On the Wii U version, the player must defeat opponents on a survival-like game. The map displays trophies of the foes. There's a CPU rival as well.

All-Star
Another returning mode in which every character is fought against, the player having limited recovery options between each fight. This time, characters are fought in the same order as their debut years. Unlike previous games, the mode is unlocked from the beginning, though only the starting characters will be the opponents. When the character roster is fully unlocked, all characters start to appear as well. A padlock appears when all characters aren't unlocked.

Event Match
Exclusive to the Wii U version, this returning mode from Melee and Brawl puts the player on special challenges. There are two different sets of events: a single player set and a 2-player cooperative set. Unlike previous games, this mode features branching paths unlocked by fulfilling certain objectives. Players can choose 3 different difficulty levels for each event.

Special Orders
A new mode with two variants: Master Orders and Crazy Orders.

In Master Orders, the player must complete Master Hand's challenges by purchasing one of three tickets using gold. Each ticket nets a reward upon successful completion. Each ticket has a difficulty level.

In Crazy Orders, the player must pay a large amount of gold or use a Pass to play. Upon entering the mode, tickets can be played in succession, but damage is carried over to later challenges. Each ticket nets a reward that is saved on a stash. There's also a total time limit of 10 minutes that drops during gameplay. In order to receive the rewards won in each challenge and finish, the player must face off against Crazy Hand.

OTHER
- There won't be a story mode like Brawl's Subspace Emissary.
- On the November 11th, 2013 daily picture, Sakurai revealed that the Capsule item has a new design.
- The Ray Gun has a new design, as shown on the November 26th, 2013 daily picture.
- Collectible Trophies return, as confirmed in the January 6th 2014 picture of the day. Just like the stages, Trophies will be mostly from handheld titles on the 3DS version and from home console titles on the Wii U version.
- On the 3DS version, it's possible to turn the characters' outlines on or off. They can be selected from thick, thin or turned off completely.
- Team battles no longer require changing the characters' colors. Instead, colored outlines are used to distinguish each player's team, allowing any character color to be selected in team battles.
- Star KOs and crashing on the screen KOs return.
- Like in Melee, the winner screen has the winner on the spotlight while losers appear on the UI.
- A single player mode will use a difficulty system similar to that of Kid Icarus: Uprising's Fiend Cauldron.
- The Sandbag training room is more similar to Kid Icarus: Uprising, showing the damage dealt to Sandbag.
- There's a new "Tips" section that allows players to learn new tricks and strategies.

The stages from the 3DS version shown were Battlefield, Gerudo Valley, Spirit Train, Arena Ferox (briefly), a Nintendogs stage, a new Mario stage and an unknown stage.

Masahiro Sakurai explains details from the game. All newcomers are featured and given special attention by the game's director.
Sakurai also shows Samus's new design, as well as Bowser's and Pit's new moves.
Shows more footage from the stages revealed in the trailer as well as music played in them.
The Capsule item is confirmed while Sakurai showcases the Villager's moves.

Polygon Interview with Masahiro Sakurai (June 14, 2013)
Confirms tripping removal and how the game's speed will be at a middle point between Melee's and Brawl's.
Confirms that the current air dodging system may change from what's currently seen in the trailers.
Sakurai states that there will be no cross-play between versions due to different stages, but states that the character library, items and gameplay will be "nearly identical."
Sakurai also states that features that cannot be implemented in the 3DS version will be left out of that version without compromising the Wii U version.
Sakurai talks about DLC, stating that there are no plans for it, but not denying of such possibility either.
Confirms that an Adventure mode like Subspace Emissary in Brawl will not return.
It's stated that introduction movies for the Villager, Mega Man and Wii Fit Trainer will be available to watch on the game, being accessible from the start.

Smashing the Definition of Smash Bros. (GameSpot Interview) (June 19, 2013)
Sakurai talks about gameplay of the new game. Once again, he confirms the removal of tripping and how the game's speed is between Melee's and Brawl's.
He mentions that customization will change the characters' moves somehow. According to him, "it's not the strength of the attacks that change--their power--but the directionality of those attacks will change with customization." What Sakurai means to say in this quote is uncertain and may have been something lost in translation. I recommend to not take this quote in consideration when speculating about the customization feature.

Super Smash Bros.: 'We Don't Have Time To Bring All Characters Back' (NowGamer) (June 19, 2013)
Sakurai states that there may not be enough time to bring all characters from previous Smash Bros. games back.
The game's director also expresses his dislike for removing characters from previous games and states that will try his best to bring everyone back, apologizing in advance for eventual cuts.

Super Smash Bros.: The Difference Between Wii U and 3DS Versions (NowGamer) (June 20, 2013)
Sakurai gives details about the two versions, confirming that the character roster will be the same in both.
The game's director also talks about stage design and about the possibility of Brawl stages returning or not.

An In-Depth Chat With The Genius Behind Super Smash Bros. (Kotaku Interview) (June 21, 2013)
Sakurai talks about version differences, character selection, gameplay balance and this game's direction.
Sakurai confirms that Final Smashes will work exactly the same way as Brawl.

July 9 Picture of the Day post on Miiverse (July 9, 2013)
Sakurai confirms that the New Super Mario Bros. stage (with Peach's Castle on the background) and the 3D Land stage (with water and spike pillars coming from below) are the same stage.

No story mode for Super Smash Bros. on Wii U and 3DS (July 26, 2013)
Confirms that Sakurai doesn't intend to have a story mode on this game. Sakurai justifies the choice with the fact that Brawl's Subspace Emissary cutscenes were uploaded to the Internet and therefore, ruining the experience of playing the game for the first time. Instead, these type of cutscenes will be used for new character reveals like the Villager, Mega Man and Wii Fit Trainer.

If SSE is out, I do hope they have some sort of story mode...
By SSE you do mean SubSpace Emissary, right?

Yep. And me to. I think there will be, but I don't remember if anything from the source that said no emissary confirmed an adventure mode. I don't think it did actually.

Why the hell would a Soccer Ball be Green?

Off-topic but...

There are a lot of green football / "soccer" balls in the professional leagues all over the world, what are you talking about? Let me guess, you don't watch football (or "soccer", as you call it)... :shades:

Can we safely say footstooling is in? It's appeared on video, sure, but I don't think Sakurai or anyone else has verbally confirmed it's for sure coming back and Brawl was notorious for gameplay changes between the reveal and release.

Smash Ball was also shown in promotional art for Villager, in case it matters since all we've seen otherwise is Final Smashes.

Its just changed colors from the previous game if it did. Would be extremely random.

But yes, appears to be WfT's projectile.

Remember some mechanics like the airdodge Sakurai said "until now" or "currently" or something in the interview he was asked about them. You might want to have one section dedicated to "possiby changed" mechanics or something.

There's also this mysterious 3DS stage

Reminds of a part of the Subspace Emissary...

Kind of looks like a Donkey Kong Country Returns stage to me, but I don't know.

Yes? No? Maybe so?

Brawl's air dodge is back, as shown at 0:48 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vQD1yJinzeQ

It also seems like Brawl's hitstun is still there as well, shown at 7:02 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vQD1yJinzeQ
Thanks for the information. Will add those details to the OP. (EDIT: OP updated with this information)

By the way, for those who have played Super Mario 3D Land and Animal Crossing games, what are the songs used in the new Mario stage and the new Animal Crossing stage as shown in the Developer Direct? Since I never played those games, I don't recognize them. I'd also appreciate to know if these are remixes or the original versions.

The song on the Mario stage is the main theme of Super Mario 3D Land: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oIm-diI36ew

The song on the Mario stage is the main theme of Super Mario 3D Land: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oIm-diI36ew
Thank you. Is it the original version that plays on the stage or is it a remix?
EDIT: It seems to be the original version.

Does somebody recognize the songs played on the Animal Crossing stage, the Nintendogs stage and Wii Fit stage?

Also, what's the song that plays in the beginning of the trailer when the Villager picks up his letter? It is also featured on the Developer Direct when Sakurai showcases the Villager.

The original version of Wily's Castle plays when Sakurai showcases Mega Man's moves on the Developer Direct and is used as the BGM of the stage.

I have updated the OP with an interview with Sakurai where he states several details of the game. It confirms, among other things, tripping removal and the lack of cross-play between versions.

samus' fsmash has been improved to be faster and have a bigger hitbox, with an explosion at the end similar to mario's fsmash

Yeah, I've noticed that too. Will update the OP with that and other information I've found.

There are five songs I can't identify from the trailers. If someone has played games in the Animal Crossing series, the Nintendogs series and/or Wii Fit, I would greatly appreciate if anyone identified the following songs.

Other featured songs include two from the Animal Crossing series, one used in the beginning of the Nintendo Direct trailer and another heard on the new AC stage in the Developer Direct.
A song from the Nintendogs series is heard on the Nintendogs stage.
Three songs from Wii Fit have been heard in SSB4 related stuff. One is heard during Wii Fit Trainer's trailer, another is heard on the Wii Fit stage during the Developer Direct and a third one is used when Sakurai is showcasing Wii Fit Trainer's moves in the Developer Direct.

This song is played in the Developer Direct when Sakurai shows the Wii Fit Trainer (I don't think it really fits in smash, pun not intended :glare: )

Thanks for the info. I've updated the OP already.

About the song being unfitting, mind that Brawl also has many unfitting songs in the soundtrack and that didn't stop them from being in. Given that multiple Wii Fit songs have been used in trailers and such, it makes me wonder if the My Music feature will return or not.

looks like Battle field can change backrounds, didn't it used to have ancient ruins in the trailers? anyway, this one with slanted mountains looks gorgeous~

Battlefield has different backgrounds depending on the version. Ruins for the Wii U version and mountains for the 3DS version.

Edit: Ninja'd. XP

Probably, I loved My Music. The Yoga song is so soothing, it will be weird fighting with it in the background (like some Brawl stages) but I'm starting to like it.
