As someone who is not familiar with YouTube exploits, I would ask that you cite a source please.

EDIT: Nevermind, it's confirmed... for a shoop.

Alright, you know a community is a madhouse when most of the people are terrified of Shantae making it in because ERMGERGD INDEES, but at the same time they see no problem with wanting CLASSIC SONIC as a character.

I just

No. I give up.

An update for you all, in case you haven't seen yet: English language ballot page is officially closed now too: https://cp.nintendo.co.jp/us/

Also patch 1.1.2 is coming very soon, but it sounds like it's just to fix the Diddy glitch, so despite the ballot being officially closed, it seems likely that we won't hear anything for a while.
Here's what I was thinking: Maybe the earliest we could get news of some kind is next week. If that's not the case, then maybe they're planning out a DLC pack for the holidays.

I love how everyone tries to claim that nobody cared about Shantae until the Smash Ballot, despite the kickstarter reaching double the amount asked for, especially when it was blindsided in a day by Mighty No. 9, Shantae somehow managing to get two sequels, which have been critically and financially successful, and recieved a metric ton of coverage in Nintendo Power.

The easy awnser to "Nobody wanted Shantae until the Smash Ballot" is :4ness:, who is in Smash Bros.

Last time I checked, nobody cared about Earthbound until Ness arrived in Smash Bros. It sold 140,000 copies in America, and recieved almost no critical praise. For Nintendo, the biggest name in gaming during the 90's, that's horrid.

Even though Shantae and Mother are incredibly similar franchises, due to their sense of humor, dark undertones, and humble fandom, Mother is apparently a gift from the heavens above while Shantae is weeaboo trash.

Sooooo......what does that stage reference too? Is it King K. Rool?

I don't recognize it from anywhere. So do you guys know where this is from?

EDIT: Also someone on Gamefaqs mentioned that King K. Rool wasn't a possible character due to what Mr. Sakurai said. Can someone confirmed this?

King K. Rool is a completely possible character, don't take anything said on GameFAQs as word of law. Otherwise Shantae wouldn't even be here. She's not very popular on that site...but neither is Daisy.

Edit: Speaking of K. Rool, there was discussion earlier about what kind of Nintendo crossovers could happen for Shantae. Clearly we have forgotten the possibility of Kremling Pirates invading Scuttle Town lead by a magnificent Kaptain K. Rool who takes Scuttle Town's inhabitants as hostages. Shantae gets on her own boat to track them down but gets caught in a storm and shipwrecks on an island, D.K. Island. She works with the native Donkey Kong, Diddy Kong, and Dixie Kong to stop K. Rool and get back her friends.

There. Done. Video game plot.

The day the results are released will be the day we see a flying pig.
Or Half-Life 3 being released

I was thinking crossovers with other indie games could possibly work better.

Shantae x Freedom Planet seems to be one that would probably get the most hype.

I agree. Ultimately Sakurai will pick who's best for the game, while still taking popularity into deep consideration and might ultimately be a deciding factor, there's always the chance that Goku or Shrek could be visibly in the Top 10 (which they are not I'm sure, just using them as an example) but not wanting to physically show the results, otherwise a character he would have picked at say...Number 7, if the top 3 are 3rd parties he can't get (or non video game characters), fans can't go "HEY! This person got more votes than Number 7 so why didn't they join the battle!?"

So no, they won't explicitly show the results, ever, and I'd be surprised if they did. I think we as fans can at least hope they acknowledge the ballot's closing other than the ballot itself's closing message, and then we hopefully see the characters picked from there in the near future. That would be best case scenario. There is a current hunch that a Direct will happen before the 16th in which Spaltoon gets a huge update. Someone guessed the 14th is when a Direct will happen which is roughly one week from now.

We didn't even get her in Runbow, where almost every big western Indie showed up

Via the Wayback Machine. This is a webpage from Wayforward (1997) describing how the earliest complete build of Shantae would play. It seems that her hair-whipping played a larger part than it does now. For example, Shantae can get pigtails to do a twirl attack, and there are points in the game where Shantae would have her ponytail cut off.

How are the numbers for Shantae games anyway? Do they break over million? Gonna have to check VGCharts for this.

I mean Shantae is a third party. The rules for them are much stricter than third parties, especially in this DLC environment where the character HAS to sell on his/her own.

Ness doesn't have to be judged by this quality. He's been a first party rep that Sakurai chose in the very first game. That means a lot considering who he was added with. Even if the games didn't sell, Sakurai saw potential in him. Same thing for Kid Icarus and Ice Climber (albeit they came later).

Also weaboo trash? This is something you'd see on Youtube. Do people say this kinda of **** here about her?

Most likely not over a million.

The number of times that Pirate's Curse hopped to the top of the eShop's "best sellers" list has to mean something, though. However, I can't find any actual numbers.

It's also somewhat speculated that the only reason Ness got in was because of Mother 3 heading to the N64, which was never released. Similar to Roy getting in Melee for the newest Fire Emblem title being released later.

For you folks who have only watched bits and peices of the Shantae games and have seen "certain" fanart, and some to the conclusion that the entire franchise is fanservice, here's the thing:

-The fanservice is actually rare. In some cases, you have to WORK to see Shantae enjoying the beach. (Similar to seeing Samus without her armor.) The only time I can actually recall fanservice is 5 moments through the entire series. Even then, they were either bonuses (Dancer outfit in Risky's Revenge or speedrun wallpaper in RR and PC) or had an actual purpose for them to exist, usually for gameplay or a simple joke. (Tan Line temple and Twitch & Vinegar being completely unaware fools in Pirate's Curse)

-The fanservice is a lot like those weird cherries you find on milkshakes. It's there, you don't really know why, and you didn't even ask for it. But even if you remove it, the overall main experience is still enjoyable. I don't love Shantae for her outfit and body, I love her for her character, and I love the series for it's writing, gameplay, and world. Even if the next game just stuffed her in your average jeans and Tshirt, I'd still love her just as much as I do now.

This feels odd coming from me of all people, since I never have a problem with fanservice in games unless it's... basically outright meant to be pornographic, or like an ecchi/hentai game or something. Oftentimes, for most games I think nothing more of it than that just being a way the character dresses. That's it.

But I kind of do have to say, and this ties in with the picture SuperSega just linked... As Shantae supporters, we do kind of have a problem with how most fans draw Shantae with such extreme cleavage. It worries me a little because everyone has to remember that Nintendo's goal is to be family-friendly. I have no doubt they could develop her model to avoid any problems with her pants being too low or with her cleavage... but still.

Such fan-art is, sadly, fuel for the detractors. Which is really kind of sickening when the art is of fantastic quality, but just one thing allows people to point and say "lol Thirsty nerds/sexism".

Not sure if I worded this post all that well. But I hope you all get what I'm saying.

Same goes for Touhou fans, unfortunately. (Especially considering how all the females, which are all strong and take up 95% of the cast, are actually well-dressed and don't really have a chest.)

Bah. It doesn't hold water as a detraction. EVERY Character gets treated this way. Whenever I see stuff like that thrown as a "detraction", I will forever, and always point to the most sexualized character on Nintendo's roster, :4zss:.

Seriously. I know These outfits are a Zero Mission reference... but, in my eyes, if Zero Suit Samus can get a pass for revealing this much skin, and having hardly anyone call it out, then I see no reason why a half-genie with standard belly-dancer/genie attire couldn't get in.

I understand what he means. In fact, it does apply heavily to Ness actually.

Look. Lets pretend for just a moment, in some alternate universe, the Earthbound series NEVER got represented in Smash Bros. Didn't appear in the first game, didn't appear in the second game, and didn't appear in the third. Didn't make it in at launch of the fourth. So, people start campaigning him for the Smash Ballot.

Lets look at the detractions that would be thrown at him.

1. Is too obscure

2. Irrelevant

3. Dead Franchise

4. Not recognizable in America (I'd say, without Smash, the recognition of the series wouldn't be as prominent over here as it is today... Heck the only reason I found out of the series myself, was lo and behold, through Smash Bros.)

Save for the third, these detractions should sound familiar. Infact, they are the same ones that have been thrown against Shantae. Many have said she is too obscure, irrelevant,.. and on the flipside from Ness' detraction, "Isn't recognizable in Japan".

So really, Ricky is right. The two really do parallel each other as cult classics. It would be really hard to say that Ness wouldn't be in the same boat Shantae is in today if he had not appeared in the first game, and sealed himself as an original twelve member (and ultimately locked his series into the Smash world as a whole).

Especially considering how Princess Jasmine from Disney's Aladdin, who is just as dressed as Shantae, is still marketed towards young girls as a role model of sorts with nobody complaining.

Shantae being the hero, rather than the generic princess, along with being created by a woman (thank you Erin Bell), should give her more leeway.

Random thing: After watching Monster Musume, is it bad for me to say when I think of Rottytops I imagine Zombina from the series.

Come to think of it, they might be more similar than I think. They're both mischievous, playful, and expressive. Also they're not afraid to go yolo in certain situations because they're already dead.

...oh

i just got it

Ness' popularity in Smash is similar to Shantae's popularity in the ballot. Both of them would be accepted despite being "nobodies" because people would actually warm up to them...

Sorry bout that :)

Let's just hope people will accept Shantae with open arms if when she's revealed.

I have terrible reading comprehension

Surely the Smash Fanbase's reaction should let me make enough ice cream to calm them down

"Breaking News: Shantae continues to trump Kirby and Pikachu as the most precious and adorable character in video games. More details at 11."

I'm serious even when she's angry she's insanely cute
image.jpg

Then she destroys tanks, takes down an entire army, and singlehandedly defeats a demon from the underworld and suddenly... Nah, she's still cute.

Sky and Mero? Well, they both are romantics but Mero is fascinated with a tragic love lol. Sky and Centorea? ...yeah, I can see that. Centorea is soooooo.... cute. I really like Centorea. Okay, sorry for going off topic for a sec lol

I love how smooth the animation is, it looks so 3-D. It looks so much better than DuckTales, which was already an amazing looking game.

Yeah, read the manga too. Zombina is definitely my second favorite right behind Suu.

I would say Centorea with a hint of Miia mainly due to her desperation to get married while still trying to act mature.

Side Note: Risky would make a great Rachnera.

Is it me, or is the burning town art going to represent this time progression?

The Smash fanbase:

-Shantae gets into Smash Bros
-3 days later
-2 weeks later
-When people figure out she's actually pretty good for competitive play
