Republic of Fighters 3
May 17-18, 2014
Noisy-le-Grand, France

Chosen by MLG to be the European qualifier for the 2014 Grassroots circuit, Republic of Fighters 3 gathered every top European player. Ending just shy of 200 entrants (almost half the entrants of the 8 games at the event), RoF3 became the 2nd largest European tournament of all time. With aMSa in the attendance thanks to a donation drive whose goal was reached in 4 days, RoF3 delivered with a lot of hype during the whole weekend.

Various facts (spoilers here, but after all, you're in a results thread)
  • Leffen wins the tournament after a fantastic comeback! Defeated 3-0 by Armada in winners' finals, he takes his revenge with an impressive 6-0 in grand finals.
  • aMSa was the guest for this event... and he delivered! Third in Melee Singles and 2nd in Project M, the Japanese player instantly became everyone's favorite, earning a standing ovation from the whole venue after his loss in losers' finals.
  • Jeapie's Falcon makes its way to 7th place despite only facing Sheik players in the bracket! Many people say this matchup is the hardest for Falcon, but he seems not to care.
  • Heavily represented as the host country, France is still lacking a top player as its best placing player, Salepâte, is only 9th.

Results

Singles
192 players: 16 bracket pools of 11 to 13 players, top 6 making it to a second round with 8 pools of 12. Top 4 of these pools made it to a 32-man bracket.

Videos

Since we had different streamers, the videos have been uploaded on different channels.

Melee singles :
Most videos can be found on Salty Playground's channel
Top 8 should be on James Bardolf's channel. However, it seems that James had corruption issues with the files, and he's been uploading them slowly. I don't know how long it will take, and I may have the French stream version first.

Melee Doubles: everything is on Salty Playground's channel.
Project M : everything is on LeFrenchMelee's channel.

Photos

Many pictures have been taken at this event by the Republic of Fighters staff or by Seya, who also added quite a few new players in her Smasher mugshots collection. Check out these few examples with some of the top placing players :

PS : you are in a picture in this thread but don't want to ? Send me a PM or something else to contact me, and I'll remove the picture.

It’s been three weeks since RoF, and I think it’s time for me to write my thoughts about the tournament, now that everything is cooled down.

So first of all, why did it take so long to have the results thread?
I’m totally responsible for that, and I really want to apologize regarding that. There are several reasons to take into account to explain that. First of all, you may know that two weeks after RoF3, there was hf.lan 7, which ended up being a 50+ player tournament. That is, something that also requires a decent amount of preparation, keeping me busy. But actually, the main reason is that until today, I was in vacation. As some of you know, I know live in French Guiana, in South America. Despite that, I am still one of the leaders of the French community, and one of the main TO, which explains why I was, along BSeeD, the Melee TO for Republic of Fighters. Now, theses three weeks around RoF and hf.lan were actually my summer vacations. I took all my days off to come back at this moment, and I’m unlikely to have vacations until december.
I’ve been quite busy with RoF and hf.lan, both before and after the event, housing players for a few days, taking care of setups and whatnot. So when I wasn’t taking care of something related to Smash, I took as much time as I could to see my friends and my family, which I only see a few times a year since I don’t live in Europe anymore. I also had to get a lot of stuff to bring back, because French Guiana is in the middle of nowhere (look it up on Wikipedia/Google Maps!), meaning it’s easier and cheaper to buy stuff in France and bring it back.
Anyway, enough johns. I felt I didn’t have much time for myself, and I allowed myself to make as much as I can, even though I made things slower for things like the results thread. I’m sorry about that, but I’m sure you can understand my choices.

Now, regarding the tournament itself. I am an idealist, and I’d say I’m fairly disappointed about it. Not because it was extremely bad (I think that otherwise, the tournament was alright, despite several obvious issues), but more because I feel it didn’t reach its (huge) potential.

We had several problems : streaming top 8 didn’t go as planned we didn’t have enough space even though we had additional setups… someone from the RoF staff made a post on the French boards discussing and explaining some of these issues. I told him to prepare one for here as well, so it should be there soon.

There are a few other points I’ll address myself.
With only two full-time Melee TOs (BSeeD and I), we were obviously outnumbered by you guys :)
We were actually supposed to have more people, but they cancelled at the last minute, so we had to do without that and get some help from players who entered the tournament and obviously didn’t have as much time. It made us extremely busy, and I’m sorry if I haven’t been as available as I aimed to be, or if I was a impolite by not seeming to care when you came to me with a question or a problem (I actually cared, though !).

Also, I know some of you complained about having Fauster do commentary in the conference hall during the top 8. With about half the audience not speaking French, I have to admit it wasn’t an easy choice. This being said, RoF’s partnership with jeuxvideo.com (the largest French gaming website) meant that we needed a commentator on the scene, being part of the stream.
Besides that, I’d say that based on my past experience, choosing Fauster wasn’t necessarily a bad thing. At hf.lan 5, we had him do commentary in the same way, and I know that the non-french-speaking players still like it, because the they could still understand the Melee terms and with Fauster’s flow, it was still pretty hype. Also, I think Fauster is perfect for this kind of setup, and we didn’t have any good english commentators able to do the same (King Funk and MikeHaggar did a good job on the stream, but commentary on a scene and on a stream isn’t the same).
Oh, and if you wonder why the tech guys taking care of sound in the room didn’t lower Fauster’s mic… they did, but Fauster is so into his stuff that whenever you lower his mic level, he’ll [strike]speak[/strike] shout louder. My ears sometimes felt sorry as well :)

There are many good things to say about this tournament. But I’ll keep being negative for one last thing, which is extremely important to me.
I think the Smash community is disrespectful.
During the tournament, I was appalled by the mess made everywhere. Drinks and food everywhere, even though I told everyone I saw we weren’t allowed to eat or drink in the venue. Or at least, I told you to put your bottles in your bag after you were done drinking .
But the amount of trash we found everywhere was ridiculous. There were even banana peels on the floor ! I mean, there were trashcans around, so if you put things like banana peels on the floor, it must be a lack of education. I don’t see how to say that otherwise, I just do not understand how one can be so disrespectful. There was even a guy who took a shower near the place where we held registration, and put water everywhere. A staff member saw someone come from there in a blue towel, and after the tournament, we found a wet blue towel in the Smash area, so it got to be a smasher. Apparently this person saw a shower, didn’t ask anyone if he was allowed to use it, put water everywhere and left his used towel behind? Come on, that is ridiculous !
Not being able to keep a venue clean is something I’ve already seen (at BEASTs and Smasher’s Reunion, notably), but it really needs to stop.
People being late were also a problem, but that’s another issue.

All this being said, let’s focus on what was good.
First, we had this opportunity to host a huge tournament with MLG’s support, and the community really made it great ! We were the second largest European tournament ever, still quite far behind the 6-year old ESA2 record, but also quite ahead of BEAST 4, the 3rd biggest. Considering the event was taking place in May, which is the exams period for many people (at least in France, and that really hurt the French attendance), that is a very good thing. I think that the ESA2 record will finally fall in 2014 or 2015. Shoutout to Germany for showing in extremely large numbers.
Thanks to everyone who attended, that was very appreciated. I really hope that despite the issues, you had a great time ! NOT thank you to many players for showing that France is free, though!

Special thanks to Salty Playground, who did an amazing job, even though RoF’s partnerships didn’t allow them to get stream top 8 as both them and I wished.
Special thanks to all those who helped : you were many helping in your own way, sometimes doing simple stuff like updating the bracket (thanks you Jeffz0r!). Every little thing helps, and BSeeD and I appreciated.

Thanks to all the players for delivering a great show too! We had so many beautiful games, and whenever I had some time, I really enjoyed the games I could watch.

Thanks to everyone who took part in the aMSa fund as well! Having him here was a very special occasion, and a source of many memorable moments! The few (or many for some people) eurosbucks you gave really contributed to this tournament!

Finally, shoutout to aMSa himself. I’ve been extremely happy to have you attend the tournament. You were really nice and respectful, always trying to play with everyone who asked. Your happiness was also contagious and you really made this tournament better.
And I was also really happy to house you. You were one of the best guests I ever had (and that is a lot to say, about 200 players have come to my place in the last few years!). You were really nice, with small attentions like the presents you brought (those chocolate were good!). My parents really liked you as well, and were happy to see someone so curious and willing to try so discover so many things (especially food)! I may have put a bit too much rum in your glass when making the Ti’Punch though, especially after you and Fauster drank about half the wine haha !
Come back anytime !

Good read. It was a great tournament, I might do shoutouts later.
Thanks for the recognition first of all, i'm glad I could help a little with running the bracket and getting people to play on livestream :)

Just checking in to say that Paturages is actually french and not italian and that Trekk's name is actually spelled Trek :)

As far as some of the unspecified characters go, we have :
Prinz playing Jigglypuff in Melee
[TCT] Kar playing Ganondorf in Melee
Kircha playing Peach in Melee
Sosuk playing Sheik in Melee
Azu playing Pikachu in Melee
Zetroxx playing Metaknight in PM
Amsah playing Squirtle in PM
Trek playing Ivysaur in PM
Clockmire playing Mewtwo in PM
Steakhouse playing Roy in PM
Paturages playing Marth in PM
Charby playing Marth in PM
Myself (Guilu) playing Marth in Melee and Wolf in PM

Anyway, had a great time though some more space and TOs would have been appreciated, already did shoutouts in the french thread and on facebook (german hype!), so that'll be it for me.

I'd like to thank all the ones who asked me to get a photo with the little blackboard. I know that many people don't feel comfortable about being portrayed and I appreciate they overcame shyness to allow me working on this project.

Also I wish to thank the people I've played with in tournament and the ones who joined crews in the hotel Saturday night. It was awesome! Thanks also to the TO's and mostly to Slhoka who has been a great host as usual.

I hope to see you guys again soon :)

Hey, TreK here, one of the French TOs for Project M

Shoutouts to every foreigner who attended, and helped us seed or find the players. I can't thank you enough.
This has been the biggest PM tournament in France so far, as our scene is very new to this game. We're growing pretty fast, and I hope we'll see you guys again when we're bigger and stronger =D

Thanks for the tournament again, it was great! I really enjoyed the tournament and seeing all the familiar people again. And also getting to know some new people too. Smash scene is so awesome. :)

(P.S. I actually main Sheik nowadays. Saw that there is a Marth after my name in the results. Not that it matters that much but still felt like saying.)

Thanks for the comments.

As for your character, I'll fix that. I just wrote Marth because I remember you destroying me with him at Smashers' Reunion haha
