The concept is simple: what are the varietal array of explanations speculators used to consider currently-playable characters to have been likely/unlikely choices to be included in the first place?
This of course, currently pertains to the playable character roster for Super Smash Brothers on the Wii U and 3DS, although I may add amendments for Melee and Brawl sections later on (perhaps even alongside the original 64 version, if it is possible). As of now, this will only extend to newcomers.

The intention of this thread is not to ridicule the fault-finding doubters or the undecided neutral-minded for their original mentalities. It is also not a place to put the proponents on a pedestal. Rather, for the historical purposes of a future reference guide, it is to serve as an informational article that not only provides insight to the speculative history of this current time period, but may also aid in the assessment of future character introductions.

Obviously, the context of Super Smash Brothers 5 will be distinctively different than Super Smash Brothers 4, yet nonetheless it may still be of a useful service.

Note: The arguments do not have to necessarily make sense, they just have to have been commonly used as a counterpoint.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Super Smash Brothers: Wii U and 3DS

Mega Man
[collapse="Competitors"] - Generally, other "legendary" third-party characters, such as (in debatable terms) Pac-Man, Simon Belmont, and Bomberman.[/collapse]

[collapse="Supportive Arguments"] - One of the most immensely popular character requests in general, even as a third-party character - strong fan-base desire dates back to Brawl's development.
- Highly iconic video-game character and series, as well as one of the most well-known.
- Sonic and Snake opened the flood gates for future third-party requests.
- The idea of Mega Man fighting Mario and Sonic in an All-Star fighting game of video-game characters is too golden of an opportunity to pass up for Smash brothers.
- Quite marketable to the hardcore competitive fan-base of gamers.
- Easy-to-implement move-set, given the various power ups of the Mega Man series.[/collapse]

[collapse="Detracting Arguments"]- Third-party requests should have been ignored in favor of first-party entities.
- If Sonic and Snake were in the game, then Mega Man would not simply because of an excess of third-party characters.
- Masahiro Sakurai would not go through all the trouble of contractual agreements with Capcom when he could work with co-developers Namco instead.
- Arguably, Capcom's substandard treatment of the character throughout the years.
- Mega Man's move-set would be either too similar to Samus, or be based entirely on projectiles (which may not translate well in-game).[/collapse]

Villager
[collapse="Competitors"]- Tom Nook
- Mr. Resetti
- Isabelle[/collapse]

[collapse="Supportive Arguments"] - Appears in the considerably popular Animal Crossing series, which has been previously represented in Brawl with several trophies, stickers, an item, and even a stage with a musical selection.
- Move-set potential is boundless, with inspiration drawing from the Animal Crossing series, including Pitfalls, weeds, umbrellas, and Gyroids.[/collapse]

[collapse="Detracting Arguments"]- Potentially the most damning case against the Villager at the time, Masahiro Sakurai once considered the character to be "too peaceful" for the brutal physicality of Smash Brothers.[/collapse]

Wii Fit Trainer
* Given the almost non-existent support for the Wii Fit Trainer, lack of any discussion pertaining to her, and the shock value of her unexpected announcement, there will be no Supportive or Detracting Arguments sections in order to avoid creeping determinism. If there is to be any in the future, it will be within a hindsight perspective.
[collapse="Competitors"]Not self-evident, except perhaps for general "WTF" characters.[/collapse]

[collapse="Supportive and Detracting Arguments"]None were used; no one brought her up.[/collapse]

Rosalina
[collapse="Competitors"] - Toad
- Bowser Jr.
- Paper Mario
- Waluigi[/collapse]

[collapse="Supportive Arguments"]
- The prodigious success of the Super Mario Galaxy games, both critically and commercially, in which Rosalina serves an important role (moreso the first than second, though).
- Becoming a fast rising superstar in the Mario series, including widespread venture into other sub-series, including playability in both Mario Kart Wii and 7, and Super Mario 3D World. She was also non-playability in Mario Party: Island Tour.
- In addition, her appearances in three consecutive home console platformers for the main Mario series were considered important.
- Debuting within the appropriate time period for Masahiro Sakurai to finalize his roster selection.
- Would possess highly unique traits as a character, especially in comparison to her competitors, such as using Lumas as projectiles or gravity-based physics.
- With the confirmations of Mario, Bowser, Luigi, and Peach in a short time-span, Rosalina could be revealed alongside them easily.
- Toad, who was generally seen as the highly prioritized Mario newcomer, was confirmed multiple times as Peach's Neutral Special (even in a group shot with the Super Mario 3D World cast as an attack), which severely diminished or even destroyed his chances of playabilty, while elevating Rosalina and the rest of the competition.
- Super Mario Galaxy confirmed as a stage.
- Despite several screenshots of Galaxy characters (such as Lubba) serving as background elements for the stage, Rosalina and the Comet Observatory was inconspicuously absent.
- Through the November 2013 release of Super Mario 3D World, it would give an opportunity for a reveal trailer in the Nintendo Direct for December.
[/collapse]

[collapse="Detracting Arguments"]
- Competitors, especially Toad, are more highly prioritized in terms of series importance.
- The Mario series did not need another Mario character, given either an "over-representation" of the series, the limitations for this roster, or even both.
- Move-set potential could only amount to either being a Peach clone.
- An alternate costume for Peach is a better idea.
- Peach is good enough.
- Using Lumas as attacks may seem uncharacteristic for Rosalina.
- She would be better off as an Assist Trophy, such as using a protective barrier against projectiles or shooting Lumas from the sky.
- Even with the "main" Toad's relegation to Peach's Neutral Special, there are several other Toads within the species, including the increasingly-important Blue Toad and Galaxy's own Captain Toad.
- Also, Toad could be recolored later on in development, to give way to another playable Toad.
[/collapse]

Little Mac
[collapse="Competitors"] - New series newcomers, as a result of less roster space this time around. [/collapse]

[collapse="Supportive Arguments"]
- A highly-requested character for several years, even during Brawl's development (although support mainly generated in the West).
- Also iconic among the remaining Nintendo "All-Stars".
- The early reveal of the Punch-Out!! Stadium indicating Little Mac's presence; while it did not explicitly refer to Punch-Out!! directly, it seemed to contain several references to the series.
- Mainstream exposure as an Assist Trophy to a worldwide audience, as well as laying a groundwork for a general move-set.
- Punch-Out!! series receiving a revival through the Wii system, right after Brawl's release. It was met positively.
- Series representation of a popular and long-running franchise.
- The West becoming seemingly more prioritized.[/collapse]

[collapse="Detracting Arguments"]
- The Villager's wearing Boxing Gloves in his Neutral Combo may render Little Mac redundant, in the same sense the Villager's Up Special would render Balloon Fighter redundant.
- Despite the Stadium stage, it may have not been related to Punch-Out!! at all. Even then, stages do not always correlate to characters. See: Hanenbow and PictoChat.
- Masahiro Sakurai stating in an interview fighting characters (such as those from the Tekken series) would not "really merge well".
- Apparently lacking an inspirational move-set as a result of being a boxer (can only attack with punches).
- Minimal support in Japan.[/collapse]

Greninja
[collapse="Competitors"] -Mewtwo, Jigglypuff, Zoroark, Genesect, PkMn Trainer, and Hawlucha[/collapse]

[collapse="Supportive Arguments"]
-Bipedial, extremely popular Pokemon for looks and battle.
-Could be unique with water moves rarely seen in movesets
-From the newest generation; a Pokemon from the latest generation is always a newcomer (Pikachu/Jigglypuff, Pichu, Lucario[/collapse]

[collapse="Detracting Arguments"]
-Too new. [As an extension of this point: Any of the pros Greninja had regarding popularity were post-release only, and X and Y were out too late to affect Smash]
-Pokemon has too many characters as is.
-People thought Brawl's Pokemon selection + Mewtwo was the most likely outcome, leaving no space for Greninja.[/collapse]

Mii
[collapse="Competitors"] - New series newcomers, as a result of less roster space this time around. [/collapse]

[collapse="Supportive Arguments"]
- Also iconic among the remaining Nintendo "All-Stars".
- Are one of the biggest sellers in Nintendo history. (Wii Sports)[/collapse]

[collapse="Detracting Arguments"]
- Find Mii stage showed prince Mii in the background, and the Global Smash Power confirmed.
- Online multiplayer will cause massive inappropriate chaos if Miis are confirmed.
- Apparently lacking an inspirational move-set as a result of being generic.[/collapse]

Palutena
[collapse="Competitors"] - Other veteran series getting a character. [/collapse]

[collapse="Supportive Arguments"]
- One of the most highly requested characters in Smash 4.
- The Palutena double picture leak.
- The Gematsu leak.
- Possibly Sakurai's bias.[/collapse]

[collapse="Detracting Arguments"]
- Apparently lacking an inspirational move-set as a result of nothing noticable to take moves from KI:U
- Sakurai's bias causing him to not add Palutena[/collapse]

Pac-Man
[collapse="Competitors"] - Generally, other "legendary" third-party characters, such as (in debatable terms) Pac-Man, Simon Belmont, and Bomberman.[/collapse]

[collapse="Supportive Arguments"]
- Bandai Namco developing the game, making the rights to Pac-Man a possibility.
- Highly iconic video-game character and series, as well as one of the most well-known.
- Sonic and Snake opened the flood gates for future third-party requests.
- The idea of Pac-Man fighting Mario, Megaman, and Sonic in an All-Star fighting game of video-game characters is too golden of an opportunity to pass up for Smash brothers.
- The Gematsu 2013 leak.
- The mysterious Namco characters and items that have been posted in pictures recently.[/collapse]

[collapse="Detracting Arguments"]- Third-party requests should have been ignored in favor of first-party entities.
- If Sonic and Snake were in the game, then Pac-Man would not simply because of an excess of third-party characters.
- Masahiro Sakurai would not go through all the trouble of contractual agreements with Capcom when he could work with co-developers Namco instead.
- Lacks inspirational moveset to take from.[/collapse]

Robin
[collapse="Competitors"] - Chrom, Lucina, and Roy[/collapse]

[collapse="Supportive Arguments"]
- Unique moveset; not a sword user.
- One of the main characters of the newest Fire Emblem installment.
- Robin's theme Id being played in Tiki's trophy scene.
- Being able to switch from male to female made the tactician more likely.
[/collapse]

[collapse="Detracting Arguments"]
- Chrom was arguably more important in the game Fire Emblem Awakening than Robin.
- The Gematsu leak (when it was credible) and Chrom being in it.[/collapse]

Lucina
[collapse="Competitors"] - Chrom, Robin, and Roy.[/collapse]

[collapse="Supportive Arguments"]
- Is a female sword user.
- One of the main characters of the newest Fire Emblem installment.
- One of the most popular characters in Awakening.
[/collapse]

[collapse="Detracting Arguments"]
- Chrom was arguably more important in the game Fire Emblem Awakening than Lucina.
- She's likely to be a clone.
- Was argued to be likely as an alt. costume.[/collapse]

Shulk
[collapse="Competitors"] - Isaac, any new series competitor, mainly RPG protagonists[/collapse]

[collapse="Supportive Arguments"]- Great potential with the Arts and the Monado.
- His game has been critically acclaimed as one of the best JRPG out there on the Wii.
- First-Party wholly owned by Nintendo.
- His game has been praised for the graphics, graphics, and music, pretty much every basic criticized area out there.
- The Gematsu leak and the Ninka_Kiwi leak, has leaked art and footage too.
[/collapse]
[collapse="Detracting Arguments"]- Was considered as an average swordsman.
- Was considered to be an Ike clone.
- Series was considered too new.[/collapse]

Duck Hunt Dog
[collapse="Competitors"] - Pretty much any retro character suggested for Smash Bros.[/collapse]

[collapse="Supportive Arguments"]- One of the most iconic retro Nintendo characters

- Original Moveset with the ducks and the NES Zapper.[/collapse]

[collapse="Detracting Arguments"]- Was outshined by Takamaru and Lip in retro character popularity.
- Retros were considered less of a possibility thanks to Little Mac (Who everyone thought was the only retro)[/collapse]

Bowser Jr.
[collapse="Competitors"] - Toad, Paper Mario, Rosalina, Waluigi./collapse]

[collapse="Supportive Arguments"]- Another popular Super Mario character just like Rosalina.
- Moveset potential with the paintbrush.
- One of the most iconic Mario villains.
- Important in every recent Mario game such as NSMB, NSMB2, NSMBU, etc.[/collapse]

[collapse="Detracting Arguments"]- Was considered unlikely after Rosalina's reveal.
- At the same time, the paintbrush concept led to people not believing Jr. at being playable.[/collapse]

Dark Pit
[collapse="Competitors"]Viridi, Magnus, Medusa, Hades[/collapse]

[collapse="Supportive Arguments"]- Moveset potential with the Dark Pit Staff.

- The Dark Pit Tweet.
- Dark Pit's tease in Palutena's trailer.
- Clones being confirmed with Lucina.
- Easy to clone.
- Could be used to market KI:U[/collapse]

[collapse="Detracting Arguments"]- Stubbornly was considered to be an alt., even after the tease in Palutena's trailer.
- The Dark Pit tease was similar to Tom Nook's, not being playable.
- Alts. of characters were considered not possible. [/collapse]

The main arguments against Mac was the fact people thought Mac's boxing style was boring, but that's pretty much the only notable argument.

Rosalina was the fact everyone said Mario didn't need a 5th character. And most people kept on with the Toad parade thinking the most important Mario character means should be playable.

The main argument against Villager was obviously Sakurai's statement regarding him as too peaceful.

Can't really think of an argument against Wii Fit Trainer, as no one actually discussed her and saw her coming.

Megaman, I think people said he was going to be a Samus clone for some reason.

I think I was the only one who didn't see Mega Man coming.
I mean, it's not like they are going to bring 3rd party characters just because people ask for them.
And, yes, I agree that Mega Man is special and legendary and all that stuff. But I thought of him as unlikely.

For Sonic:

There's actually not many competitors unless you want to count the possibility that they'll keep 3rd Parties at 2 spots only. In which case. Snake, Pac-Man, and Mega Man would of been considered competition (There was a time people may have thought that Megaman replaced Sonic.) But Sonic is the highest requested 3rd Party in Smash as evidenced how he got in Brawl in the first place. In terms of sheer popularity, Sonic had little to no competition.

Supportive Arguments include:

-As I said before, Sonic is one of, if not the most requested Smash character in the entire franchise. It says something when part of the reason they delayed Brawl's release was to include him. The demand was that high.
-Nintendo and Sega are closer then they've ever been before. Even having a deal that included 3 Nintendo Exclusive Sonic games (Sonic Lost World, Mario & Sonic Olympics 4, and the upcoming Sonic Boom game). It would not be too farfetched to say that his inclusion in SSB4 was a hidden clause in the deal.
-Even prior to the deal Sonic has continued to support Nintendo after Brawl was released with many ports and even a few more exclusives prior to the deal.
-Let's face it: Mario Vs. Sonic in a video game is something that ever since Brawl and the first Olympics Crossover is something both Sega and Nintendo love to milk cash out of. The inclusion of Mega Man and maybe even Pac-Man makes it even better as more classic icons of gaming can duke it out.
-Sakurai doesn't like cutting anyone. 3rd Parties no exception. Sakurai likely knows exactly what kind of backlash the game would receive if the most wanted character in the franchise did not return once more

Opposing Arguments include:
-The only major one I remember that actually had somewhat of a point as much as I hate to admit it was the chance that Sonic and Snake were meant to be Brawl Only exclusive guests. If that had been enough to keep them out, it'd be utter bull****. But nonetheless was objectively the one thing that could have kept Sonic out of SSB4 because we were unsure if 3rd Parties could count as Smash Veterans until Sonic's confirmation came. Everything else besides this point though was personal dislike for the character or a pot shot at Sonic's recent games other then Colors and Generations. Which absolutely has nothing to do with the character's chances for Smash.

Toon Link:
+ Recurring Link design
+ WWHD

-clone
-Link #2 unnecessary
-We had not left it to Alfonzo yet ST Link appearing on Spirit Train

Rosalina:
+ 3 main title 3d home console Mario appearances in a row
+ 4 Mario Kart playable appearances in a row
+ One of, if not, the most popular pick for a newcomer on Miiverse between early November and December 18th
+ Likely to continue to reappear due to the Galaxy Team loving her
+ Gateway Galaxy confirmed, which is where you first meet Rosalina, talk to her on the Gate missions, and leave her in the epilogue. The majority of Rosalina cutscenes took place here, and the only other place she's associated with is her Comet Observatory, which anybody who's finished Galaxy 1 knows that will most likely be her Final Smash.
+ Comet Observatory not in the background of Gateway Galaxy. This is her only option for a canon Final Smash. If it was a decoration, that would be one less move for her to use.
+ Not standing next to Lubba on Starship Mario. By the end of Galaxy 2, many creatures have joined your ship, but Rosalina stands atop Starship Mario next to Lubba and the other Lumas. Lubba and the Lumas are present there in Smash Bros. Rosalina was not. If was was not going to be playable or an assist, they would have just given her a cameo here or on her Comet Observatory on the Galaxy Stage. But nope. She was in neither place. Which basically confirmed she was at least an assist trophy.
+recency
+debut to Mario Party, Luma debut to Mario Tennis. The 2 are spreading
Luma actually has his own merits too, also appearing in the last 3 main Marios, MKWii, and unlike her, Mario Tennis 3ds
She and Birdo were meant to be added but were cut.
-debuted only in 2007, however, this wasn't a big issue as Wii Fit Trainer also debuted in 2007
-people thought an alternate costume for Peach would suit her better

About Mega Man, I remember people saying
- he wasn't currently popular with Capcom so he wouldn't be chosen as a Capcom rep.
- A moveset based entirely on projectiles wouldn't work and his main way to attack would be too similar to Samus.

When I eventually venture onto the veterans after navigating the newcomers, SonicMario, I will then add a section for Sonic; it will be among the first.

Another detraction for Wii Fit Trainer, she isn't the main character from her series. The Mii is the main character, and people remember the balance board more.

I'll contribute some.

Mega Man

Supportive Arguments
-Had incredible moveset potential
-Had close ties to Nintendo's past
-Truly an "all-star"

Detracting Arguments
-Third party which could be difficult to get
-Capcom was trying to kill off Megaman (wrong, but it's what some people argued)
-A thing of the past, his best days were far behind him

Villager

Supportive Arguments
-Animal Crossing is a big series and it's only getting bigger
-It's possible that Sakurai changed his mind.

Detracting Arguments
-His avatar like state made him difficult to pick an appearance
-He's not a "real character" as he is simply an avatar

Wii Fit Trainer

Supportive Arguments
-None were used. No one brought Wii Fit Trainer up.

Detracting Arguments
-None were used. No one brought Wii Fit Trainer up.

My other points were brought up though I can do vets later.

Perhaps I will create a poll:

Should Wii Fit Trainer have a Supportive/Detracting Arguments section?

Edit: I will simply add in a Hindsight Perspective for the character.

For Wii Fit Trainer, she is not important to Nintendo's history, and could be considered the furthest thing from a Nintendo Allstar (after impossible choices like Master Cheif, Batman or Goku).

Due to unforeseen circumstances regarding personal matters, I have not the time to maintain this thread. BluePikmin11 has now taken over as the OP, and I wish him the best.

Brawl+Mewtwo was said to be the most likely situation. But nevertheless, no one saw the Pokemon criteria as a hint to a Pokemon newcomer (which was stated last year), people said it applied to Mewtwo. But it applies to Greninja.

For the last time- it said nothing about choosing new or returning Pokemon characters, only about what's the "hot" Pokemon. Gee, seriously. You only chose to interpret it that way.

I hate to triple post but I need to address something first.
So with the character discussion threads closing soon, should I add Dark Pit, Bowser Jr., Duck Hunt Dog into the OP now?

well back in the day plenty of us thought the villager had a decent shot despite what sakurai said in the past and we were right

and when you think about he does make the most sense out of all the animal crossing characters

Greninja :4greninja: (I guessed him when X and Y was released, surprisingly enough)
For:
-Bipedial, extremely popular Pokemon for looks and battle.
-Could be unique with water moves rarely seen in movesets
-From the newest generation; a Pokemon from the latest generation is always a newcomer (Pikachu/Jigglypuff, Pichu, Lucario)

Against:
-Too new. [As an extension of this point: Any of the pros Greninja had regarding popularity were post-release only, and X and Y were out too late to affect Smash]
-Pokemon has too many characters as is.
Edit: I can't believe I forgot to specifically mention Brawl + Mewtwo :facepalm: I just remembered after seeing the updated OP with that mentioned.

Competition:
-Mewtwo
-Jigglypuff
-Zoroark
-Genesect
-PkMn Trainer
-Hawlucha

I'll give my attempt on this based on likeliness and competitors:

Villager:

- Animal Crossing was one of Nintendo's biggest franchises.

Competitors:

Tom Nook
Isabelle

Megaman:

- The most requested 3rd party character by fans.

Source: http://www.polygon.com/2013/6/17/44...director-masahiro-sakurai-character-selection

Wii Fit Trainer:

- Maybe because Sakurai sees potential in her in providing a unique move set?

Rosalina and Luma:

Competitors:

Toad
Bowser Jr.

Little Mac:

-Franchise was revitalized for the Wii and was able to achieve recognition.

Competitors:

- King Hippo

Greninja:

- Fresh new character to represent the X/Y series.

Competitors:

Sylveon
Zoroark

Palutena:

- Uprising showed a lot more of her character and personality which I favored.
- One of the most well known characters within the Kid Icarus franchise?
- Also had her own special animated short series, Revolting Dinner

Competitors:

- Magnus
- Viridi
- Medusa

Pac Man:

- Namco's most well known mascot.

Competitors:

- Lloyd Irving (Tales)

Lucina & Robin:

Lucina:

- Very favored within Japan.

Robin:

- Unique and diverse moveset from other Fire Emblem characters.

For both:

- Fire Emblem Awakening is a well received game.

Competitors:

- Chrom
- Roy
- Lyn

Shulk:

- Xenoblade Chronicles was a very successful and well received game within the Wii.

Competitors:

- Dunban
- Riki
- Mumkhar
- Dickson

Will post more later.

Time for me to give my views on the remain newcomers:

Bowser Jr.

-Another popular Super Mario character just like Rosalina.

Competitors: Toad, Paper Mario, Nabbit, Waluigi

Dark Pit

-Along with Palutena, Dark Pit is probably another iconic character within Kid Icarus Uprising.

Competitors: Viridi, Magnus, Medusa, Hades

Duck Hunt

-Probably Sakurai and his team wanted to bring a character from Nintendo's forgotten franchises.
-Something Sakurai and his team could potentially make a creative and ideal move set for Duck Hunt.

Competitors: Takamaru, Balloon Fighter, Mach Rider, Prince Sable

I think characters like Alph, Dixie, Dark Samus, Impa, Black Shadow, Galacta Knight, and most other potential clones should be added to Dark Pit and/or Lucina's competitors.

I need help with the DHD arguments, @ Arcadenik Arcadenik , do you remember what arguments were against DHD?
Yes, I remember them too well. I'll be back another day with links to posts showing exactly what the haters and detractors said about DHD.

I'm on my Wii U right now and I don't like using my phone to browse the Internet either... but I'll be back here when I get on a computer.
