[collapse=GIGANTIC POST]
I haven't really seen any sites that cover the aspects of pokemon and how the ideas originate to any major degree, so I decided to work on this and uncover some of the mysteries behind the pokemon:

Bulbasaur
-Name Origin: Saur is Greek for lizard, so basically the name means "Bulb Lizard", which fits pretty well.
-Typing: Obviously the presence of a plant bulb would make it a grass type, but the poison type is a little more vague, probably referring to how wild shrubs usually have some form of poison in them.
-Appearance: Most likely based upon the Synapsids such as Dimetrodon which had short heads, and occasionally stubby tails, some such as Dimetrodon also had a ridge on their back which Bulbasaur's bulb somewhat resembles. Synapsids are to mammals as dinosaurs are to birds an extinct group of animals who's related class still lives.
-Species (Seed Pokemon): Once again refers to the bulb on it's back.
-Ability (Overgrow): The plant parts on this pokemon could become more active in danger.
Ivysaur
-Name Origin: Means "Ivy Lizard", which is kind of odd when you think about it because there aren't really any vinelike properties to it's body.
-Typing: See Bulbasaur
-Appearance: Similar to Bulbasaur, but has longer legs, the ears have noticable indentations, is slightly larger, and instead of a green bulb on it's back, it has a purple flower surrounded by fern leaves. The purple color of the flower is probably to represent the poison-typing of the pokemon.
-Species (Seed Pokemon): See Bulbasaur
-Ability (Overgrow): See Bulbasaur
Venusaur
-Name Origin: The "saur" part once again refers to the lizard, while the prefix most likely is a nod to a Venus Flytrap, which looks NOTHING like the flower on it's back.
-Typing: See Bulbasaur
-Appearance: Unlike Bulbasaur and Ivysaur, Venusaur doesn't have any spots on it's body, though it does have warts. The fern leaves Ivysaur had are now flat against the body, and the bulb becomes a wild asain flower, called a Rafflesia, which is also the basis of Vileplume.
-Species (Seed Pokemon): See Bulbasaur
-Ability (Overgrow): See Bulbasaur

Charmander
-Name Origin: A portmanteau of "Charcoal" and "Salamander".
-Typing: The fire-typing is most notable in the name and the flame on it's tail.
-Appearance: A bipedal theropod-like tiny dinosaur with a light-colored underbelly and a flame emitting from it's tail. A fire-immune salamander was also a mythological creature of medieval times, especially in Asia. (It is probably not based on the living Fire Salamander, which is black and yellow)
-Species (Lizard Pokemon): Though not overwhelmingly lizard-like, the names are based off reallife lizards and the line does have some lizard characteristics.
-Ability (Blaze): Could be seen as the pokemon using it's fire "reserves" at a higher power to help defend itself.
Charmeleon
-Name Origin: A combination of "Charcoal" and "Chameleon".
-Typing: See Charmander
-Appearance: Another theropod-like pokemon, but with a crest. The crest could either refer to a chameleon's crest or the crests of many dinosaurs.
-Species (Flame Pokemon): Unsure of the reason for the name change, but the flame is larger on Charmeleon's tail.
-Ability (Blaze): See Charmander
Charizard
-Name Origin:"Charcoal" + "Lizard"
-Typing: The dragon-like appearance and ability to breathe fire, plus the flame-tipped tail, make it obvious why it is a fire-type, the presence of wings makes the flying-type status a given aswell.
-Appearance: A dragon-like crreature with a long tail that ends in a flame, also has blue wings.
-Species (Flame Pokemon): See Charmeleon
-Ability (Blaze): See Charmander

Squirtle
-Name Origin:"Squirt" + "Turtle"
-Typing: Turtles usually live in watery enviornments
-Appearance: A blue turtle with a brick-colored shell, and a tail that resembles a wave rolling onto a shore.
-Species (Tiny Turtle Pokemon): Self-explanatory due to the size of the pokemon.
-Ability (Torrent): Uses water to the best of it's ability as a last resort.
Wartortle
-Name Origin: A combination of the words "War" and an intentional misspelling of "Turtle"
-Typing: See Squirtle
-Appearance: A dark blue trutle with large ears resembling the wake of a boat, and a large set of waves for a tail.
-Species (Turtle Pokemon): Not small enough to be considered tiny.
-Ability (Torrent): See Squirtle
Blastoise
-Name Origin: The suffix "Toise" comes from the word "Tortoise", while "Blast" refers to the sound of a cannon, like the ones on Blastoise's back
-Typing: See Squirtle
-Appearance: A dark blue turtle with two cannons protruding out of it's back, most likely based off the siphons of bivavles such as mussels.
-Species (Shellfish Pokemon): Further emphasizes the idea that the two cannons are based off mollusk siphons.
-Ability (Torrent): See Squirtle

Caterpie
-Name Origin: A cutesy way of saying "caterpillar", probably inspired by a child trying to pronounce the word.
-Typing: Being a bug, the typing is pretty self-explanatory
-Appearance: Based directly off the caterpillars of the Spicebush Swallowtail for the body and the horn is based off several of the memebers of the Swallotail Butterfly family, which produce a VERY strong odor from it which disturbes predators and can be smelled almost immediately by people nearby. This propety is actually referred to by Pokemon Yellow's pokedex entry.
-Species (Worm Pokemon): Probably due to the fact that many caterpillars are called "worms", such as inchworms.
-Ability (Shield Dust): The ability to defend itself from poison, or in the case of Milkweed caterpillars EAT poison probably is the origin of this ability idea.
Metapod
-Name Origin: "Meta" is Greek for beyond, and pod refers to the casing surrounding it's "true self".
-Typing: Being a chrysalis of a butterfly, it's obviously a bug-type.
-Appearance: Looks EXACTLY like a Black Swallowtail Chrysalis, sans the eyes of course.
-Species (Cocoon Pokemon): Refers to the inert state of transformation the pokemon is in.
-Ability (Shed Skin): Bugs go through molts that shed their skin, probably is indicating that the status is caused by a skin-ailment which disappears when the skin falls off.
Butterfree
-Name Origin: A combination of the words "Butterfly" and "Free", since the butterfly is free of it's chrysalis.
-Typing: The bug and flying typing is a given.
-Appearance: Based off the Small White, the body parts are a little more difficult to determine. The Small White, and several of it's cousins suchas the Cabbage White, are known as pest species which eat many vegetables, which could be a basis for the teeth. Butterflies have large compound eyes so that's pretty easy to determine, and the presence of hands most likely refers to how the front two limbs of real butterflies are used for grabbing and cleaning materials on their faces and not usually for walking.
-Species (Butterfly Pokemon): If you can't figure out then you've got issues.
-Ability (Compound Eyes): Refers to the large multi-directional eyes of many insects, which allow for a larger visiblity range and thus more ease locating targets.

Weedle
-Name Origin: Probably a cutsey way of saying "Little", but it could be based on "Weevil", though it doesn't look like one in the slightest.
-Typing: Being a grub the bug-typing is pretty easy, the tips on it's head and rear, plus it's relation to bees, is the basis for the poison-typing.
-Appearance: A brown gub with a large nose and spikes on it's head and tail.
-Species (Hairy Bug Pokemon): Kind of an odd name since even though there are hairy grubs and caterpillars, this doesn't look like it has a single hair on it.
-Ability (Shield Dust): Probably a similar basis as Caterpie's.
Kakuna
-Name Origin: A combination of the words "Cocoon" and "Kahuna", hawaiian for "caregiver", which is based on the fact that as soon as bees escape the pupa stage, their first job is to take care of the other young until they are ready to leave the nest for longdistance missions.
-Typing: The bug and poison typing are both based on the bee that is "inside" the pupa.
-Appearance: A bee pupa. The "claws" that appeared in earlier games were based on the wings forming in the pupa, which are visible from the outside.
-Species (Cocoon Pokemon): It's in an inert state of transformation.
-Ability (Shed Skin): Similar reasons as Metapod's.
Beedrill
-Name Origin: A fusion of the words "Bee" and "Drill"
-Typing: Bees are bugs that have poisonous stingers, thus the bug and poison typing.
-Appearance: A bee with two large drill-like barbs on both front legs, based on how the front legs of bees look almost scythe like, the tail is based off a hornet's and not a bee's however.
-Species (Poison Bee Pokemon): Pretty self-explanatory, nearly all bees that have stingers use some kind of poison, though there in reallife there are true stingless bees that bite instead of sting.
-Ability (Swarm): The name refers to the behavior of insects when they fly together, though the actual ability does not. In the case of Beedrill the increase in power is based on how bees only sting as a last resort (since in reallife once they sting someone they die from the injuires of having their stinger rip their insides out).

Pidgey
-Name Origin: A kiddy way of saying Pidgeon.
-Typing: Being based on a generic animal that can move through the air, the normal/flying typing is pretty easy to understand.
-Appearance: Resembles a Eurasian Tree Sparrow.
-Species (Tiny Bird Pokemon): It's a small avian.
-Ability (Keen Eye): Most birds are very wary of their surroundings and only will come to the ground if they feel secure, and if something were to attempt to obscure their vision, such as a spray of sand, they'd move to a place that it doesn't affect them.
-Ability (Tangled Feet): Confused birds tend to move erratically.
Pidgeotto
-Name Origin: A combination of the word "Pidgeon" and the name "Otto", which is German for prosperous or great, also, the other common name for the Eurasian Tree Sparrow is the German Sparrow which backs up the name's meaning.
-Typing: See Pidgey
-Appearance: The build greatly resembles a Cockatoo or Turaco (but mostly the former) but has most of it's coloration based on the Tree Sparrow sans the tail and crest.
-Species (Bird Pokemon): Pidgeotto isn't small enough to be considered tiny.
-Ability (Keen Eye): See Pidgey
-Ability (Tangled Feet): See Pidgey
Pidgeot
-Name Origin: Similar to Pidgeotto. "Ot" is a variation on the name "Otto". (kind of like how Jeff is a variation of Jeffrey)
-Typing: See Pidgey
-Appearance: Similar to Pidgeotto's reasoning, though Pidgeot has a far longer crest and is bigger.
-Species (Bird Pokemon): See Pidgeotto
-Ability (Keen Eye): See Pidgey
-Ability (Tangled Feet): See Pidgey

Rattata
-Name Origin: It's supposed to be the sound of a mouse moving around, a "rat-a-tat, rat-a-tat" kind of sound.
-Typing: Mice are common animals and thus are considered normal
-Appearance: looks like a generic mouse, but with exaggerated facial features and a curly tail.
-Species (Mouse Pokemon): Self-explanatory
-Ability (Run Away): Mice are quick animals that easily flee from predators usually.
-Ability (Guts): Mice are more likely to bite hard than run if suffering from an ailment, disease, injury, etc.
Raticate
-Name Origin: It's a combination of the words "Eradicate" and "Rat"
-Typing: See Rattata
-Appearance: Most likely based upon the Nutria, but has the body coloration of a Dormouse. (Not a misspelling)
-Species (Mouse Pokemon): See Rattata
-Ability (Run Away): See Rattata
-Ability (Guts): See Rattata

Spearow
-Name Origin: A portmanteau of "Spear" and "Sparrow"
-Typing: Similar reasoning as with Pidgey, a common flying animal so the normal and flying types go with it.
-Appearance: Based off of finches, though none in particular, resembles somewhat the Purple Finch.
-Species (Tiny Bird Pokemon): It is a small avian.
-Ability (Keen Eye): Birds tend to be very aware of their surroundings even when visibility may be limited.
Fearow
-Name Origin: A portmanteau of "Fear" and "Sparrow"
-Typing: See Spearow
-Appearance: It strongly resembles a heron , but doesn't seem to be any species in particular, many species of herons have large wings, long beaks, and crests.
-Species (Beak Pokemon): Refers to the large beak.
-Ability (Keen Eye): See Spearow

Ekans
-Name Origin: Snake spelled backwards
-Typing: All Rattlesnakes are venomous.
-Appearance: A purple rattlesnake with a yellow band around it's neck, the head is similar to that of another poisonous snake, the Coral Snake (which coincidentally has a yellow band right next to it's head), rather than the triangular shape of rattlers.
-Species (Snake Pokemon): Pretty self-explanatory
-Ability (Intimidate): Virtually all real animals are fearful of the poison that a rattlesnake can inflict. (Except Kingsnakes, which are immune to venom, but there aren't any in Pokemon so forget about that)
-Ability (Shed): Snakes can shed their skins, any materials on the outside of the skin are no longer affecting the snake.
Arbok
-Name Origin: Cobra spelled backwards and with a "K" rather than a "C".
-Typing: Cobras are highly poisonous.
-Appearance: A King Cobra with a large meancing face on it's hood, real King Cobras have natural markings on their oods that sometimes look like eyespots.
-Species (Cobra Pokemon): Self-Explantory if you read the above.
-Ability (Intimidate): Cobras are quick and lethal predators that are hot-tempered and tend to be too dangerous for predators to attack.
-Abiltiy (Shed): See Ekans

Pichu
-Name Origin: A smaller form of the word "Pikachu".
-Typing: Not really visible from it's appearance unless you look at it's cheeks other than that, there isn't much of a hint at it's typing.
-Appearance: Resembles a Pika.
-Species (Tiny Mouse Pokemon) Though at 1' tall it's not small for a mouse, in comparison with other pokemon it's pretty tiny.
-Ability (Static): Exposed electrical parts or wiring can lead to temporary paralysis.
Pikachu
-Name Origin:"Pika" is the japanese way of writing "Sparkle" while "Chu" is a Japanese onomatopoeia for mice, like how we consider it to be "Squeak" in the America and parts of Europe. Coincidentally, a "Pika" is a small-rabbit like animal.
-Typing: Not easy to see from a visual standpoint, but the lightning-bolt tail is a hint at the eletric typing.
-Appearance: Greatly based on a breed of rabbit called the Harlequin, though not of Japanese origin, an orange and black or sometimes yellowish-tan and brown striped version was first created in Japan, the striping on a Harlequin is higly variable, appearing anywhere in any direction, including as sploches on the tips. The tail is exaggerated into a lightning bolt and the two spots are supposed to be either be rosey cheeks or are a nod to the Van De Graaff Generator or one of those sparking static discs who's name eludes me at the moment.
-Species (Mouse Pokemon): Other than the rodent-like characteristics, not much to say.
-Ability (Static): See Pichu
Raichu
-Name Origin: "Rai" is Japanese for "Lightning" and "Chu" is the sound a mouse makes.
-Typing: The name and tail make it clear it's a electric-type.
-Appearance: Looks even more like a Harlequin rabbit than Pikachu, with it's rabbit feet. The curly partition on the ears are curious-looking, I'm guessing that it's supposed to be curly hair on it's ears? The tail is clearly a classic lightning bolt attatched to a long black tail.
-Species (Mouse Pokemon): See Pichu
-Ability (Static): See Pichu

Sandshrew
-Name Origin: A portmanteau of "Sand" and "Shrew", a small rodent.
-Typing: Since it lives in the ground, being a ground-type is pretty understandable.
-Appearance: Greatly resembles a scute covered recreation of a Golden Hamster which live in sand burrows in deserts.
-Species (Mouse Pokemon): Boy a lot of pokemon have this species name, probably based on it's rodent origins, though itself doesn't resemble a mouse.
-Ability (Sand Veil): Probably due to a desert animal being used to sandstorms, though of course they'd rather not be in one if they had the choice in reallife, they probably have better bearings in one than a human.
Sandslash
-Name Origin: "Sand" + "Slash"
-Typing: See Sandshrew
-Appearance: Greatly resembles a Pangolin with oversized claws.
-Species (Mouse POkemon): Doesn't really resemble a mouse and was probably not changed due to laziness.
-Ability (Sand Veil): See Sandshrew

Nidoran♀
-Name Origin: "Nido" is Japanese for twice, referring to how the line is "duplicated". Ran Ran Ru! "Ran" is Japanese for Orchid, a symbol of youth, love, and maturing in many cultures.
-Typing: Poison takes the place of rabies I guess.
-Appearance: A somewhat spikey mouse with blue fur.
-Species (Poison Pin Pokemon): Has poisonous fur, though no real mammal has that.
-Ability (Poison Point): Since it has poisonous spikey "guard hairs" in it's fur, it's poisonous to make contact with.
-Ability (Rivalry): Probably to go along with the whole Male/Female Nidoran lineages and the Orchid symbolism.

Nidorina
-Name Origin: "Nido" is Japanese for twice, and "Rina" is Japanese for Greenery.

-Abiltiy (Rivalry): See Nidoran♀

Nidoqueen
-Name Origin: "Nido" is Japanese for twice, and "Queen" is due to the power of the pokemon.
-Typing: See Nidoran♀, though the added Ground typing is most likely due to it's shear size.
-Appearance: A dinosaur/rhino hybrid with large mammalian ears.
-Species (Drill Pokemon): Refers to the horn on the middle of it's head.
-Ability (Poison Point): See Nidoran♀
-Abiltiy (Rivalry): See Nidoran♀

-Ability (Poison Point): See Nidoran♂
-Abiltiy (Rivalry): See Nidoran♂

-Appearance: Looks like a smaller verrsion of Clefairy with big ears, a hair curl and a small tail.
-Species (Star Shape Pokemon): Cleffa vaguely resembles a 5-pointed star.
-Ability (Cute Charm): Fairies are supposed to be cute, which I guess would attract normal people/animals of the opposite gender into not attacking them.
-Ability (Magic Guard): Fairies have special powers which apparently can prevent them from being affected by precipitation and poison.
Clefairy
-Name Origin: A combination of "Clef" [as in Music Clef] and "Fairy".
-Typing: See Cleffa
-Appearance: Basic generic Japanese cartoon character with a long tail and big ears and a curly tail, may be somewhat based on a fox, but only barely.
-Species (Fairy Pokemon): It's supposed to be a fairy.
-Ability (Cute Charm): See Cleffa
-Ability (Magic Guard): See Cleffa

-Appearance: Resembles a red Chihuahua with curly hair on it's head and tail.
-Species (Fox Pokemon): The name and appearance resemble a fox somewhat.
-Ability (Flash Flare): Being a firey animal, being immune to fire and using it to it's advantage would seem natural.
Ninetales

-Typing: See Vulpix
-Appearance: Resembles an Arctic Fox.
-Species (Fox Pokemon): See Vulpix
-Ability (Flash Flare): See Vulpix

Igglybuff
-Name Origin: Most likely out of desperation to rhyme, but it basically is another way of saying a "Polished Laugh".
-Typing: Normal because it's generic.
-Appearance: A pink ball with a spiral on it's head and a fluff on top.
-Species (Balloon Pokemon): It looks kind of like a balloon
-Ability (Cute Charm): It's supposed to be a cute . . . thing.
Jigglypuff

-Appearance: A pink ball with a curl of hair and ears.
-Species (Balloon pokemon): See Igglybuff
-Ability (Cute Charm): See Igglybuff
Wigglytuff
-Name Origin: It's longer than Jigglypuff, but more durable, so it's wiggly and tough.
-Typing: See Igglybuff
-Appearance: A pink ovular blob with rabbit ears, a curl on it's head, and a large white patch on it's belly, still generic looking but it's got rabbit characteristics too.
-Species (Balloon pokemon): See Igglybuff
-Ability (Cute Charm): See Igglybuff

Zubat
-Name Origin: Unsure, "Zu" is a Japanese letter in Hiragana, but I don't think that has an exact meaning and it's not used in the Japanese spelling of Zubat oddly. COULD be a way of saying "Zoo" + "Bat", but I doubt it. However, if that is indeed the origin it would literally mean "Animal Bat".
-Typing: Bats are known to carry lethal rabies (which could be considered a poison) and they can fly.
-Appearance: A bat with long feet (or tails depending on you view it), large wings, mouth, and ears, and no eyes. The lack of eyes probably reflects the idea that cave animals tend to not have eyes (although Bats do).
-Species (Bat Pokemon): Self-explanatory
-Ability (Inner Focus): Bats are extremely focused hunters who can pick out a particular prey just by sound alone, presumably this reflects that interuptive noise will not break their concentration (flinching).
Golbat
-Name Origin: "Gol" is Mongolian for "River", so Golbat is a river bat. Makes total sense since bats usually eat mosquitos which thrive around marsh and waters.
-Typing: See Zubat
-Appearance: A bat [with eyes] and a HUGE mouth.
-Species (Bat Pokemon): See Zubat
-Ability (Inner Focus): See Zubat
Crobat
-Name Origin: "Cro" is an alternative spelling for "Creux" which is French for "Cave" [or more literally "Hollow" or "Cavity"]. So the name means "Cave Bat".

-Appearance: A bat with four wings.
-Species (Bat Pokemon): See Zubat
-Ability (Inner Focus): See ZUbat

Oddish
-Name Origin: "Odd" + "Radish"
-Typing: It's a plant, which is why it's a grass-type, and Horseradish is poisonous, causing gastrointestinal illnesses if eaten in more than minute amounts. (i.e. as a condiment or in medical drugs)
-Appearance: A blue radish with tiny facial features and medium sized feet, which vaguely resemble tubers.
-Species (Weed Pokemon): Hopefully not referring to the drug properties of horseradishes, most likely refers to the fact that it looks like a weed if submerged in the ground.
-Ability (Chlorophyll): Plants grow and "move" better in sunlight.
Gloom
-Name Origin: It's getting ready to bloom, and it's deperessing (a.k.a. gloom)
-Typing: See Oddish
-Appearance: A blue bulb, that drools (or secretes) a fluid and has a Rafflesia bud on it's head, the idea of it stinking comes from the realworld fact that Rafflesia smell like rotting flesh according to most that have . . . experienced it's odor.
-Species (Weed Pokemon): See Oddish
-Ability (Chlorophyll): See Oddish
Vileplume
-Name Origin: Vile means bad, and Plume most likely refers to either it's top's coloration (as in Bird Plume) or it's billowing appearance (like a Smoke Plume).
-Typing: See Oddish
-Appearance: A blue bulb with a Rafflesia on it's head.
-Species (Flower Pokemon): The Rafflesia is one of the largest flowers in the world.
-Ability (Chlorophyll): See Oddish
Bellossom
-Name Origin: "Bell" (as in Bellskirt like the one it "wears") + "Blossom"
-Typing: It is only Grass type because it looks too happy to be poisonous I guess . . . Could also reference the ripening of certain fruits and plants, which can be poisonous if not ready to be picked.
-Appearance: Looks almost like a little green girl with two flowers in her "hair" wearing a petal bellskirt. I suppose it's supposed to look Hawaiian.
-Species (Flower Pokemon): It's supposed to be a beautiful pair of flowers.
-Ability (Chlorophyll): See Oddish

Paras
-Name Origin: The first two symbols in the word "Parasite", coincidentally Paras is Hindu for "to touch" (as in the mushrooms touching the body).
-Typing: It's an arthropod with six-legs and that walks on land so being a bug-type is easy to understand, and mushrooms tend to be considered plants (grass-type) though that is false.
-Appearance: Resembles a Coconut Crab (one of the largest land arthropods in the world) and appearas to have contracted Caterpillar Fungus (though it's susceptible to virtually all insects) a disease where mushrooms sprout from an insect's body and is found in parts of China and Japan.
-Species (Mushroom Pokemon): Named after the fungus growing on it's back.
-Ability (Effect Spore): The spores of the Caterpillar Fungus can be contracted by insects through ingestion or direct contact, and mushrooms can also cause paralysis, poison, or drowsiness so it fits relatively well.
-Ability (Dry Skin): Mushrooms require moisture, and so do crustaceans.
Parasect
-Name Origin: A combination of the words "Parasite" and "Insect"
-Typing: See Paras
-Appearance: Looks like a hermit crab, but uses a mushroom rather than a shell.
-Species (Mushroom Pokemon): See Paras
-Ability (Effect Spore): See Paras
-Ability (Dry Skin): See Paras

Venonat
-Name Origin: A combination of the words "venom" and "Gnat"
-Typing: While gnats aren't actually venomous bugs, their bite causes an allergic reaction due to their saliva. (Same with flies and mosquitos)
-Appearance: A purple fuzzball with pink compound eyes, claws, two antennae and a two-toothed mouth
-Species (Insect Pokemon): Pretty self-explanatory
-Ability (Compoundeyes): Insects with compound eyes have a large field of view and tend to navigate toward targets easily.
-Ability (Tinted Lens): I'm guessing because biting insects affect creatures (such as birds and other flying insects) in reallfe just aswell as other animals.
Venomoth
-Name Origin: "Venom" + "Moth"
-Typing: See Venonat
-Apperance: A purple moth with two fangs and a three-pointed crest. The wings are most likely based on that of the Hummingbird moth, which keeps it's wings in a more butterfly-esque position than most moths, while the two fangs are probably based on the Vampire Moth's ability to suck blood, though it uses a tube rather than fangs like "true" vampires.
-Species (Poison Moth Pokemon): Many moths have poisonous properties due to the buildup in toxins ingested by their larvae, a major family of poisonous moths are the Tiger Moths.
-Ability (Shield Dust): Some moths can shed dust (in actuallity the scales on their wings) as self-defense, but not as a way to cure themselves . . .
-Ability (Tinted Lens): See Venonat

Diglett
-Name Origin: A portmanteau of "Dig" and "Piglet"
-Typing: Being a digging pokemon, the ground-typing is easy to see.
-Appearance: A hashbrown with eyes a cartoony mole with large eyes and no hands and a nose comparable to that of real moles.
-Species (Mole Pokemon): It resembles a mole.
-Ability (Sand Veil): Being a digging creature, it isn't really affected by sandstorms above the surface, so in comparison with it's foe, Diglett increases in evasiveness.
-Ability (Arena Trap): Guessing the shear amount of holes created by foes prevents the foe from escaping due to it stepping in the burrows.
Dugtrio
-Name Origin: "Dug" + "Trio", because there are three moles.
-Typing: See Diglett
-Appearance: three hashbrowns three Digletts standing in a triangular arrangement, with the one in the back being taller than the other two.
-Species (Mole Pokemon): See Diglett
-Ability (Sand Veil): See Diglett
-Ability (Arena Trap): See Diglett

Meowth
-Name Origin: The sound cats make, an alternative to "Meow"
-Typing: Cats are normal.
-Appearance: A whit cat with a Koban on it's head, brown hind paws and a brown tail tip, and is definitely based on the Maneki Neko, a cat sculpture used as a "wealth charm" symbolizing good financial balance or hope for balance. The coloration pattern is also probably based on the Chocolate-Point variation of the Himalayan cat breed.
-Species (Scratch Cat POkemon): Some cats have a tendency to scratch at people.
-Ability (Pickup): Cats have a tendency to find and pickup objects and prey.
-Ability (Technician): Cats are smarter than average animals who would use weaker attacks only at effective places on their foe.
Persian

It was probably in the Mario Universe board. You also worked on a history thread there that tied together all the different games as well, right, UberMario?

And I still have no idea what possessed you to write all this...

Hey Ubermario, I think you just wrote nearly an entire Pokedex. I mean, wow, you really put a lot of time into this. Good job.

No, I meant for Pokemon. I swear Spire or someone made something like this. And I'm not talking about the family tree thing.

lol Yep, that reminds me, I need to get back to writing for that one.

When I put my mind to something I can't seem to stop. lol Some sites have done some of the names, and others have done some of the ideas behind the pokemon themselves, NONE I've seen encompass ALL the pokemon.

If you think this is crazy, I originally considered doing the basis behind the dex entries too. XD

Dude I swear I wish I were more like you Uber. I mean, ****. I don't either have the mind to come up with these ideas nor do I have the patience to do all this

Thanks bud, it takes a lot of patience to do something like this, and yes, I did save it in a word document, I used notepad. (Find it easier to minimize than some other programs for whatever reason)

Whoops, Nice work UBERmario.

I always thought Zapdos was the Thunderbird found thought Native American Legend.

Thanks. (lol @ Ulti's post, especially when I stared at that avi of his)

Good point on Zapdos, I'll add that up there because you're probably right on that one, not sure why I didn't think of that.

I'm not exactly sure what you mean by "finished the project", they don't go into the names that much [if at all], and some of the origins listed there, such as Steelix, I do not entirely agree with.

Bulbapedia said:
Caterpie resembles a green caterpillar with yellow ring-shaped markings down the sides of its body. Its most notable characteristic is the bright orange antennae on its head. These and the large eye-shaped markings help to startle predators. It shares many characteristics with other larval Pokémon such as Weedle and Wurmple, suggesting that their evolutionary lines are closely related.

Caterpie is a stylized caterpillar, most likely resembling a Spicebush Swallowtail caterpillar.

[...]

Caterpie's name is a corruption of caterpillar.
Yeah, Bulbapedia sucks.

OH WAIT IT HAS JUST AS MUCH AS YOU DO

Guys, it's an interesting, creative project. Smogon has us beaten in a competitive Pokédex by far as well, and we're still tackling that -- just because Bulbapedia has something like this already doesn't mean the project is useless.

Posts complaining that this project is useless are inherently far more useless in and of themselves -- if UberMario wants to try and have fun with a project like this, more power to him.

I think it's pretty hardcore. When Ttar's Dex gets entered in on here I'll be happy ^^.

Seriously though, I hope you had this in a few word documents for backup.

Wow uber, I am impressed :bee:

Alright, changed part of the entry for Mew, after thinking about it for a bit I've deduced it's actually a kangaroo rat, though I don't believe "Mew" is based on "Mutant" because it's supposed to be ancient. "Mutation" might be a possibility though.

Bulbapedia says otherwise
Bulbapedia doesnt have everything, hence why there is an "edit page" button there

Regardless, this is a possibility, and should be acounted for, good day to you good sir :bee:

EDIT: Golduck is based off of the kappa, you may want to include that

Nice work so far. I'll try to help contribute to this, but for one thing it'd be alot easier on everyone's eyes if you put the OP into collapse tags, UberMario.
