NorCal how can I make time for smash?

This question is for melee and smash 4. Tittle pretty much asks it itself but I work and communte about two or three hours every couple days to work (working three to four days a week) and I'm planning on going back to school but how can I practice smash efficiently? I see people like ken or KDJ do the same with work and school but wonder how I can manage time well to practice. For smash 4 I can practice when commuting to work but for melee I don't know. There is a tournament in San Francisco that takes place every Tuesday night and I'd like to go one day and not lose in the first found. Very anti social as well.

I think that as you go and see the same faces around you will gradually feel comfortable with the familiar faces around norcal smash(who are nice people).
