Hey, me and some friends are thinking about going here from sweden but since we are not that good, we were wondering how much room there will be for playing friendlies? Will there be MLG Qualifiers only or will there be plenty of casual games?
We are entering the tournament, but we mostly want to play as many people as possible to learn.

The idea is that whenever a TV isn't used for the tournament, you can use it for freeplay.
And since the tournament style is a bit harder than round robin, it will be faster. Meaning there will be more TVs to play friendlies. It won't be B.E.A.S.T.4, but comparing to one if not the best tournament in the world regarding freeplay time doesn't mean much ;)

We should announce something soon to allow everyone to play more friendlies. Also, we'll announce something about the tournament format too.

There was a post in the RoF aMSa player fund thread on Gamefaqs, where someone asked if Europe had any other good/decent level yoshi players other than Leffen. This I assume is in preperation for aMSa and is a discussion of how difficult it will be for aMSa to win in Europe. (I think sweetxserenity, and/or mooninite started the discussion) since I dont have a gamefaqs and dont desire to make one, I'll just post this here. The answer is yes there are/were other really good Yoshi players in Europe. Mind Trick and Svampen are two pretty old school Yoshi players that were pretty damn good when they were most active. I believe Mind Trick(old school player from the Netherlands if I'm not mistaken still plays)
Remen vs Mind Trick from a month ago: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZXH7FalNils

As for how Europe's general experience vs the character, Yoshi, will bode for aMSa...I guess we'll find out in 3 weeks.

As we are approaching 100 registered players (considering the smashers' ability to register at the last moment, that's pretty good !), here are two new things regarding the tournament :

Tournament Format

I know many of you are concerned by the tournament format at Republic of Fighters 3. While it is often used in e-sports, bracket pools aren’t the norm for Smash tournaments, especially in Europe, where we’ve been doing round robin for so long. It is a harsh way to play, since in only two sets, you can be out of the tournament.
This format is now the norm at big US events, and it’s simply another view of competition, much closer to what is usually done in e-sports.

Now, we are smashers, and we thought that we should find a way to adapt this to better fit the wishes of the Smash community. So we tweaked a bit the bracket pool system and submitted our proposal to the heads of the RoF3 staff, who gave us their approval, thanks to the trust they have in our organization since RoF2.

So what is different ?
RoF3 was going to use an Evo-style bracket pool system, meaning that out of the several players in each bracket pool, only two would make it out : the one winning winners’ finals, and the one winning losers’ finals. The latter would enter the next round in the losers’ bracket, while the former would stay in winners bracket.
We will change three things about this : first, we will keep our bracket pools pretty small. Eight players if possible. And among these players, we will have not two but four players qualify for the next round. Finally, the ranking of these bracket pools will only be used as a seeding value, meaning that every qualified player will start the next round in winners bracket, earning another chance to make the difference.

With this system, many players will have the possibility to play more tournament sets. One can say that it doesn’t change much for the low level who will lose their two first sets. That is true, but this is the hard rule of competition, and one of the best tests for a player : with fewer mistakes allowed, it is necessary to be the best at any moment. This system is also quite helpful to host the tournament : instead of playing 28 sets per pool, it will allow us to advance to the next round after 11 sets. It also means that more time will be available for friendlies, allowing everyone to play against many different opponents.

And while we're on the "freeplay" topic...

The RoF3 “Lend a GC, get a TV !” program

Unlike most European tournaments, Republic of Fighters 3 does not offer housing at the venue. While this is not a problem since nearby hotels will allow to accommodate players, one might think: “we won’t get to play as much ”. We tried to figure out a way to solve this, and we had an idea, inspired by the amazing Genesis tournament series. I was lucky enough to participate to both Genesis events, and being at the hotel was part of the fun at this tournament: in every room, people were playing and you just had to walk from one room to another to play friendlies. There’s a problem, though: the F1 and Ibis hotels located near the RoF venue have flatscreen TVs… which happens to be quite the problem for us smashers.

So we came up with something: on Friday evening, we will go to the hotel with a fair amount of CRT TVs, and we will lend them to players attending the tournament. This way, everyone will be able to play as much as they want, and we’ll have a situation similar to Genesis.

Now, to be able to get one TV, a few conditions will be required, because we obviously don’t want to make that extra effort to lend TVs if it make our tasks as tournament organizers harder. Therefore, for us to lend you a TV, we will make you sign a paper asking you to be ready to give the TV back in the morning. The idea is that around 7h30 in the morning, we will come to the hotel, go to each room where we lent a TV and take it to the venue to set it up for the tournament. This will allow us to gather all TVs in no time, while letting you play at the hotel.

The other condition necessary to have a TV for the evening is that we will ask you to lend a Gamecube and a copy of Melee. While we should have enough TVs for everyone, we simply won’t have enough Gamecubes. And that’s why we’re counting on you. We want to encourage people to bring gamecubes, and that’s also why we’ll allow those who do to borrow a TV. Obviously, we would collect the GCs with the TVs in the morning. Failure to give the TV back will result in a sanction we haven’t decided yet. The idea behind this is that you will be responsible for the TV until Saturday morning. We will knock at the door, possibly call you, just to make sure you wake up, even if it’s only to open the door, give us the TV and the GC and go back to sleep.

We hope quite a few of you will be willing to try that: we have the feeling it can help us hosting the event, but also that it will allow you to get a better experience from the event, as it was one of the best thing at Genesis events.

Oh, and just so you know, aMSa now has his plane ticket. He'll be in Paris between May 13 and May 22.

You should really have the link for where we have to sign-up in the first post.
I found it though, but it's just not convenient for most people :p

Looking really forward to this!!

About the great TV hotel lending deal. If it's a small TV - can you keep it till the venue opens to get some morning practice, if you bring it by foot?

Honestly, I think I'll just rename the teams my self when preparing the seeding. There are way too many things too change (most coming from players mistyping their information, event that's not the case for you).

Also, something that should be a disappointing information for many: you should have the pools in advance, but only on friday. The reason for that is that I don't have an extended amount of time before the tournament because of work. However, I'll stay 9 hours in a plane before landing in France on Friday morning, so I think it's gonna be a good moment for me to focus on seeding and stuff.

Aske : Right no, I'd say no. But we'll see what we can do.

Vegard : it should be fixed

I was checking the ruleset on the RoF website and I was wondering... is wobbling allowed?

Also, what is the "modified DSR"?
I think there are two different interpretations of the DSR, correct me if I'm wrong:

Player A wins the first match. Player B counterpicks to Final and Player A wins. Player B wins the third match. Is Player A now allowed to counterpick him back to Final?
I've seen some tourney sets in which this was allowed, and some sets in which it wasn't. I still didn't get what's the DSR version that is being adopted at nationals, lol
Not that it matters that much, as I won't be playing Bo5 sets in bracket x)

And... is the first stage of the set "included" in the DSR? If someone wins on the stage he striked to, can he counterpick his opponent back there?

Thank you <3

Whoops, you reminded me I gotta check the rules. I'll take care of that this weekend.
Also, yeah, wobbling will be allowed.

When the CRT TVs are delivered to FI-hotel?
We (the Finnish group + King Funk) have 3 setups you can use.

Does the stream get archived automatically? I probably can't watch the finals live, so I was planning on watching the archive after it goes offline to avoid spoilers (like you could do on twitch, but idk if this streaming platform does this)

I can conclude that after 10 minutes of searching this website doesn't auto-archive. I'm a little confused as to why this isn't on mlg.tv, and then as to why dailymotion was picked as a second choice. There ain't nothin wrong with twitch..

It's because RoF has a contract with dailymotion.

This tournament was AMAZING! Major shoutouts to Slhoka and other organizers who worked their asses off to bring everyone the best experience. Also, massive thanks to Salty Playground for doing an fantastic job streaming the majority of the event (UCK ). There were minor issues but they were beyond your control and you handled the situations extremely well. You are the engine driving the Smash scene forward in Europe and I am grateful for your service.

Granted, there were issues with this tournament. I think it's important to discuss them rather than point fingers. As for myself, I choose to apologize for showing up late on the first day. I realize that me (and others) showing up late was one reason the tournament was delayed (among several other factors). In any case, I am extremely satisfied with the whole experience and had a BLAST. I am positive I am not the only one either :lick:

Shout-outs to these amazing & insightful people: Zlasher, Pingviinituutti, Jeapie, King Funk, Lolex, Zoler, MikeHaggar, Beat!, Armada, and Mr. Love.

Also, Germany never fails to bring the hype ;)
