[In Need for a Patch] Collection of Glitches, Balance Issues, Missing Features & other Problems

This isn’t a thread to ask for DLC or game-mechanics changes!

Patches Semi-Confirmation:
The Replay-Mode in Super Smash Brothers for 3DS tells us, that videos can get useless, if a new version of the game exist. This pretty much confirms the possibility of Gameplay-Patches!

After the release of Super Smash Brothers for 3DS in Japan the game already saw its first patch. This shows us, that Nintendo will support the game after its release. At least on the functional side. Mario Kart 8 also got a bigger patch recently, which even changed small inconveniences based on feedback from the community (like the cursor starting at “Next Race” instead of “View Replay”)

With Nintendo possibly collecting data for other patches, we also should start to gather bugs, glitches, inconveniences, balance issues and other problems, which bother every player and negatively influences the game. Besides informing other players about those issues, it is important to get vocal about those problems and giving analysis, journalists and others a source to go even more public with those information.

I will split issues in different categories. From game-breaking glitches to smaller inconveniences. If you want to add something to the list, use the following template. Please do not use insider-words of the community or abbreviations. Words, which are also used in-game (e.g. Power Shield) or are common videogame or game-design terms (e.g. Knockback), are completely fine:


Type of issue: Look at the different categories and choose the best fitting one.
Descriptions: Please try to be specific and also brief.
Condition: If there are specific condition to get a bug or glitch to work, name then here. This is optional field for other points.
Trigger: If you know the technical background, why a glitch gets triggered, describe it in here.
Consequences: Describe why this issue needs to be fixed.
Solution: If you have a solution in mind, post your idea here. Please don’t go overboard with it. Try to stay realistic and simple. Otherwise this point is optional.

Game-Breaking Glitches: ( 10 Glitches / Last Update: 02.10.2014)
If a problem breaks the game or the normal gameplay down, we have an Game-Breaking Glitch on our hand. In this category we count glitches, which have the player restarting his 3DS, the game or a match, as well as anything, which forces one player in a passive role and hinders the intended flow of the game.

King Dedede’s Gordos can get stuck on his belly and disable his Side-Special-Move until the end of a match.

Condition
: If King Dedede uses his Side-Special “Gordo Throw” , while he get hit with his won Gordo from an earlier use of his move, the new Gordo get stuck on his Belly.
Consequences: King Dedede’s Gordo will stay on his belly for the rest of the match and can’t be removed. If the player tries to use his Side-Special again, the Gordo will move in front, but stay there for moment and the return to the belly. The Gordo doesn’t damage anyone and will make the Side-Special useless. It gives the player with King Dedede a clear disadvantage, since he can't use his whole move-set.

Olimar's Pikmin can get stuck in animation and cannot be used properly unless Olimar and all his current Pikmin lose a stock.

Condition: Olimar must use his D-Throw with a white Pikmin then immediately use Dsmash.
Consequences: Olimar's Pikmin will get stuck in an animation, making Olimar not be able to use Pikmin properly or at all. He cannot toss them (most of the time) or use any Smash/Aerial/Tilt that utilize his Pikmin.[/B]

Duck Hunt Duo’s Neutral-Special can get disabled until the end of the match, if Rosalina & Luma use their Down-Special

: Duck Hunt Duo uses their Neutral-Special “Can”. Before the can explodes Rosalina catches it with here Down-Special and hits another character with it.
Consequences: The Can will stay in its explosion animation in midair. It can’t hurt anybody and can’t get destroyed. Duck Hunt Duo can no longer use his Neutral-Special for the rest of the match.

Hit-boxes carry over into Sudden Death, if a match ends with a Final Smash
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Condition
: A matches ends through time-out and the game will go into Sudden Death. Before time runs out one player has activated his Final Smash and another player got hit by or created a hit-box with his own move.[/B]
Consequences: The player, which was hit by or created a hit-box, get instantly hit with it on the start of Sudden Death. No matter if the hit-box originally was part of his move. This mostly ends in the player losing the match.

Those are not game-breaking glitches, but they still can be encountered or setup easily on a normal match. They are obviously not meant to happen and can properly give a character an advantage or disadvantage. All in all they let the game look very buggy.

Yoshi will teleport after jumping from a ledge and landing with his Up-Special-Move on a ground.

: Yoshi needs to hang on a ledge, jump form it on the stage and hit any kind of ground with the end of his Up-Special-Move animation.
Consequences: Yoshi will instantly teleport back to the direction of the ledge and also away from the stage in the air. Nonetheless the player can easily return to the stage again and use all his moves in the air.

Using a Counter Special-Move, when the ledge is taken, causes a strong backwards knockback on the user.

: Ike, Marth or Lucina use their Counter-Moves, right after the ledge is taken from them. This can possible also affect Little Mac, Palutena, Greninja, Shulk and Mii Fighter.
Consequences: The character suffers from a strong backwards knockback, which may result in a KO.

Pac-Man's Fruits from his Neutral-Special gain momentum from Fire Hydrants (Pac-Man’s Down Special).

: Running against water coming from a Fire Hydrant of Pac-Man’s Down-Special, while holding a projectile produced by Pac-Man's Neutral-Special
Consequences: The thrown fruit will gain momentum in the direction that the water was going towards. Either speeding up the projectile or making it go in the opposite direction.

The Player can affect Wario’s momentum after a knockback in weird ways.

Not every glitch has big consequences. Small problems, like missing sound or animation errors, can fall into this category. Also Game-Breaking Glitches, which need a very special setup and therefore are very hard to trigger under normal circumstances, can be seen as Minor Glitches.

Yoshi will jump out of reach, if he uses his Down-Special-Moves in the air followed up with his 1. Custom-Up-Special-Move.

: The player has Yoshi’s 1. Custom-Up-Special-Move “High Jump” equipment. After the player uses Yoshi's one of his Down-Special-Moves in the air and Yoshi hits the ground, the player immediately uses his 1. Custom-Up-Special-Move “High Jump”.
Consequences: Yoshi will jump extremely high in the air, not lose a stock on the ceiling Blast-Zone and stay out of reach for every other player for circa 10 seconds. A player can use the glitch to wait out for an Time-Out or to annoy other players.

Consequences: Rosalina will not be damaged or get knockback by the moving road at the bottom of Mute City. She still will be influenced from the movement of the track, what can KO her.

Dominate Strategies / Advantaging Balance Issues: ( 2 Issues / Last Update: 02.10.2014)
Here I need to be special clear: I only will include issues, which have big consequence for the game and a character, and aren’t based on a glitch, but attributes or other standard elements of the game. If a player has no chance of escaping, something takes the fun of playing a character and overall hurts the normal flow of the game, i will be included in this list. In other words, if “Don’t get grab” is the only option for a player, while getting grabbed is a basic part of the game, then we can call it an Dominate Strategy or Balance Issue.

Diddy Kong can instantly cancel animations and hit-stun in the air with his Neutral-Special-Move.

Condition
: While Diddy Kong suffers from hit-stun or goes through an animation in the air, the player inputs the command for his Neutral-Special-Move “Peanut Pop Gun” and cancels the move with the Shield-Button.
Consequences: While Diddy Kong should actually be suffer from hit-stun or go through the original animation, the player now can use Diddy’s Neutral-Special-Move or interrupt it with every another move. This allows him to interrupt any form of combo, multi-attack or lag from an animation. This gives him an unintended advantage in many different situations.

Not every balance issue has positive side-effects for a character. Some are very easy for other character to explode and take the fun away, playing those characters. The issue has to have his origin from the victim-side to be listed here.

After Wario releases himself from a opponent grab, he can’t avoid a follow attack from different characters, including Little Mac’s KO-Punch.

: The opponent uses one of following characters: Little Mac, Shulk, Zerosuit Samus, Rosalina & Luma, Shiek or Paulenta. The opponent grabs Wario and let him break free from the grab automatically.
Consequences: After Wario gets released from the grab, the player can’t act for a limited time. But this is enough time for many different characters to act before him, while Wario can’t avoid there attacks in any form. The Characters Little Mac, Shulk, Zerosuit Samus, Rosalina & Luma can even use some of their strongest attack against Wario and get a sure KO against the player.

This category is kind of speculation and don’t have to be real issues. There about game elements, which don’t look like to be intended and aren’t glitches, but break the rules of the game. Since they don’t give a player a real advantage, i don't count them as real Balance Issues. Nonetheless they will be included for completeness.

Mega Man can escape multi-hit moves with his Up-Special-Move.

Condition
: While Mega Man gets hit from a multi-hit move (e.g. Pikachu's Down-Smash) and uses the command for his Up-Special-Move "Rush Coil".
Consequences: Although Mega Man should be suffer from the Hit-Stun of an multi-attack, he still can summon Rush, bounce upwards and thereby escape the opponent's attack. Therefore he only will suffer from the first few connecting hits of an mutli-hit attack. Yet he has no easy way to punish his opponent and take full advantage from his escape.

Consequences: It is not possible to spot the changes of character. What allows another player to easily cheat and does not give us the possibility to attain knowledge of the changes in advance.

I think patches that alter the actual gameplay are unlikely due to the issue of local multiplayer; what happens when somebody with the patch plays against someone without it?

It might just download the newer version from the other player. I don't know though.

There's Marth suicide Counter on ledge trump (victim).

Like Mario Kart 8, I have one big, big simple GUI request: the ability to toggle custom moves without equipment.

Edit: Peach's moves are not added to the stale moves queue if they connect while she is floating.

I wouldn't call the Yoshi teleport to the ledge game breaking, more of a minor glitch.

Good post though, good to have all of this in one place.

Wait, what do you mean toggle customs without equipment. Do you mean if you have a character set with custom moves and equipment you can't turn only one or the other off later?

Wario had that same issue in Brawl as well, though it was limited to aerial grab releases iirc. Like ROB could get another guaranteed grab out of an aerial grab release, among other things like charged FSmashes, DSmashes, etc

I guess I am old school but I don't like patches. Unless they fix a super game breaking glitch or something.

I feel like glitches add flavor to the game. Either way nice job compiling the info.

i agree for the most part but ddd's needs to be fixed, it sucks to lose the use a move for the rest of the game

Uh, on the D3 glitch, didn't he remove it himself during the match the moment he activated his down special?

Dominant Strategy/ Balance Issue

Sudden Death matches are disallowed in usual competitive play since they give uneven advantages to certain characters and potentially give an unfair comeback to players who were clearly losing the game before time ran out, but can potentially turn the tide and win from SD matches despite being outplayed by their opponent. And yet, For Glory Mode Online turns it on if the players are tied at a stock. I wish they'd make a patch to remove Sudden Death from For Glory, letting the winner be decided by who has less damage percent.

Specials that can cancel pre-tumble percent hitstun isn't necessarily a bug. It seems to be a facet of moves that we've yet to see explored/tested for everyone.
It being a lot more versatile on Diddy because that special can be shield cancelled does not suddenly scream to me more apparent an issue than Megaman being able to (and possibly many other characters).

Also nearly everything else in those videos was stuff he could do in Brawl, and popgun cancel is definitely not instant and he doesn't show us having the move go through multi hits like Megamans can. But the distinction you make between "minor" and "major" balance issues otherwise sullies a good format/thread idea.

Game-Breaking Glitches:

Olimar's Pikmin can get stuck in animation and cannot be used properly unless Olimar and all his current Pikmin lose a stock.

Condition: Olimar must use his D-Throw with a white Pikmin then immediately use Dsmash.
Consequences: Olimar's Pikmin will get stuck in an animation, making Olimar not be able to use Pikmin properly or at all. He cannot toss them (most of the time) or use any Smash/Aerial/Tilt that utilize his Pikmin.

Dominate Strategies / Balance Issues:

Peach, Link, and Toon Link can cancel Hitstun/Aerial Lag by pressing down+B while holding a turnip/bomb.

Condition: While holding a turnip/bomb in hand, do a short hop immediately followed by an airdodge. Upon Landing, press down+b and Peach/Link/Toon Link will instantly toss the item, bypassing the Aerial Lag caused by the Airdodge. This also works upon suffering any lag from an aerial, or when in hitstun given by an attack.
Consequences: Peach, Link, Toon Link bypasses the ending lag or hitstun given by aerials or attacks.

Also, the Yoshi-insta ledge glitch with his up+B isn't "Game-Breaking" in a sense as it doesn't hinder Yoshi from accessing any of his moveset. The Dedede Gordo glitch, and the Pikmin glitch ARE though.

Some more glitches I can think of off the top of my head that haven't been covered yet:

Greninja can cancel landing lag with Side B. Also his Side B goes the wrong way if edgehopped or something? These ones are in the video with the Olimar and Peach glitches.

The most important glitches to patch out gameplay-wise IMHO are Diddy and Mega Man's hitstun cancels. I'm less worried about the landing lag cancels, I don't think they're quite on the same level as cancelling hitstun, but we should probably keep an eye on them too. If anything perhaps Greninja's should be patched out but Link, Toon Link and Peach's item toss landing cancels could stay in for a while.

Megaman doesn't cancel hitstun. It's a misconception everyone has, but he can't do it.

Peach, Link and Toon Link do cancel 100% of the hitstun just like Diddy with the item toss.



Also, you would patch out Greninja's which can only be done on landing with a move that's more laggy than any of his aerials or other specials (basically comitting to more lag than what he would have had if he hadn't done it) while not patching the one that allows the characters to basically cancel all lag on landing and do whatever they want. That's extremely biased -.-.

With these attitudes, we should also be demanding the removal of Wavedashing from Melee and DACUS + Glide Toss from Brawl.

Let's keep the pitchforks out only for infinites and game-breaking bugs.

Yes please.
If hitstun cancelling is broken, it shouldn't be on any character. Cherry picking who should get these features is DUMB. Fighting games aren't league of legends or WoW, design intentions and changes are not something we can do anything about other than speculate, unless we get a nod from Nintendo that BALANCE patches are actually a thing.

And if balance patches actually was a thing, I'd be more upset if Greninja had his removed while another character kept it because one is seen as high tier while the other one is seen as worse.

Is it a bug? Maybe.
Is it intended? Maybe.
Is it broken/fair/overpowered/balanced/dumb? Maybe.
Should other characters have it while others cannot? Not a maybe like the others. We can only answer this by knowing the answers to the others, and unfortunately we don't nor likely ever will have answers for the others.

Right now only 4 characters can hitstun cancel, Peach, Link, Toon Link and Diddy.

Diddy can't really do it effectively all of the time as he has to do a very laggy move in the air (where he can't shield cancel it).

These new 3 characters can basically break out of any hitstun and do whatever they please in the middle of combos. You can even alter your knockback by inputting an Up-B in the middle of flight after breaking hitstun. You don't cancel knockback (you might with Toon Link's down-air, I haven't tested) but you do alter it.



I am okay with landing lag cancel, it isn't that big of a deal, it just opens a plethora of new offensive options for your character but canceling hitstun is not a good thing for the game's health.

At the risk of making a tier list prediction, it seems unlikely that any of these 3 characters will be dominating the meta-game, with or without this trick.

So it requires them to be holding items. Item pulls that are extremely laggy moves (please don't tell me that a 40-50 frame action that has no hitbox, invulnerability/etc isn't asking to get WARLOCK PUNCHED or a various equivalent).
Those items which disappear on hit or on shield or on a timer.

So? I ain't saying Diddy should be able to do it I am saying he can't really use it to escape combos or change his trajectory because he will lag anyways, he is trading lag from hitstun into lag from a move.



Link, Peach and Toon Link cancel basically all hitstun, it doesn't matter how inconvenient it is for them to do it.

It really only mattered on Diddy, who having a transcended priority move pop out infront of him during hitstun actually was a combo-breaker.

It's a shame though, because all you had to do was respect it and then it literally did not change any match ups for Diddy Kong whatsoever when discovered, it gave him an opportunity to be able to get out of Ice Climber chaingrabs but that didn't mean much once the ICs mains figured out how to OPTION SELECT/BUFFER INPUTS to have the opposing character grab the dropped banana, instant throw it back at diddy kong, and then continue the 0-death with impunity.

You cannot Z drop out of hitstun from what I've seen, it's only proper item throws. Those item throws are in the 25-40 frame action area, this isn't game breaking at all until I actually see it doing so.

You do realize that you can allow your opponent to hit you and instantly hit them back with a stronger move? It isn't like Brawl's item buffer input because that didn't take you out of hitstun. This is equivalent to Melee's crouch cancelling at low %. Where a person can just take your hit and hit you back with a stronger hit. The difference here is that it can also be done in the air.

It isn't like this will make Peach the best character in the game. It isn't something that should be in the game though. How would Brawl be if you couldn't air dodge out of hitstun in frame 30? How would it be if you could airdodge out of hitstun in frame 1? Because that's what this is.



Link and Toon Link might have a harder time using this effectively because their bombs explode with time but Peach can technically always have a turnip in her hand. It's still not something they should be able to do.

Except the only hit they are allowed to do is a really slow and weak item toss.

I don't have frame data on the throws, but from testing it doesn't seem to be as slow as you guys claim. It's a frame 1 escape, so the throw lag just needs to be 2 frames shorter than the lag from the attack you were hit by in order to be effective, it doesn't need to be any faster as it would have the same exact effect. And you can technically follow it up with other attacks.

I will stop commenting anyways until more testing has been done. I cannot test this myself as in order to test the relative speed between Peach's turnip throw and another character's ground attacks I need another human to play with.

So i updated the whole list ... the editor here is horrible sometimes. I never use the Rich Text Editor again for those posts.

I also created the "Common Glitches" category. There i will include glitches, which are easy to trigger in a normal match, but don’t break the game or give a player an clear advantage or disadvantage.

Sorry that many of the sources are on niconico, it was the easiest place to find glitches. I also don't own a copy, so I can't see if any of them have already been patched or confirm conditions.

We don't know yet. But if you open the replay-mode the first time, the game tells you, that videos can become useless with later patches. This pretty much comforts gameplay patches.

This list is only a collection of game-elements that look like unintentional or strange behavior. I only judge the usefulness or problematic of those elements. If something is a bug or a feature will be decided by Nintendo or Namco. I only try to collect them to create attention, so that the developers can look into those subjects. If this would be Melee, i also would have included Wave-Dashing (proplery a Common Glitch).[/quote]
