How do you get the video files for making montages/combo videos?

I'm new to video editing and stuff, so this is probably a really stupid question. So do you guys contact the youtuber and ask them to send you the video files, or is there a way to get footage from youtube videos by extracting?? Thanks.

Yeah. Otherwise if you're looking for random footage or you want a quicker/lower quality way of doing it, I made a post detailing those methods here.
