Goku, The Monkey King!

What game is he from and who is he?

Goku is from a Japanese only game released on the Famicom called Yuyuki. The game was a part of a series called Famicom Fairytales that also included Shin Onigashima. The game is loosely based of the Chinese story, Journey to the West, which is also the same story Dragon Ball is loosely based around.

Goku is a rude and often selfish monkey who tries to take over heaven with Gyumaou but was caught and exiled away. A little girl named Chao, finds him and takes care of him for a while and from her, Goku learns the importance of kindness and diligence. However, Goku is found by Oshakasama and is imprisoned. Chao goes on an adventure to find the Gavel of Light to save Goku. Several years later, the world is put under peril by Goku's old ally, Gyumaou and Goku is tasked to defeat Gyumaou and save the world.

Playstyle and Moveset:
Ground Speed 6/10: Goku is above average speed on the ground.
Air Speed 7/10: Goku is quite fast in the air.
Size 4/10: Goku is slightly smaller than Mario.
Weight 3/10: Goku is a lighter character that can be launched fairly decently.
Fall Speed 6/10: Goku falls at an above average rate.
Jump Height 6/10: Goku jump height is above average
Traction 3/10: Goku has poor traction and doesn't stop immediately when turning.
Goku's playstyle and moveset is inspired from Shaolin and bo staff techniques as well as using some moves from Sun Wukong in Smite (Goku is based off Sun Wukong in Yuyuki). Goku also uses a kung fu fighting style. I wanted to make Goku fast, agile, and deadly like the techniques I've based him on.

Normal Attacks:
Jab Combo: Goku strikes downward from over his shoulder with the staff. He follows up with a strike from the other end of the staff going diagonally upward. He ends the combo with a horizontal strike from the staff.
Forward Tilt: Goku plants his staff in the ground and swings on it like a monkey, using his legs to attack.
Up Tilt: Goku climbs up his staff and does a spinning kick while spinning around the staff.
Down Tilt: Goku pokes his staff near the opponents feet.
Dash Attack: Goku jumps in the air and performs a butterfly kick. Here's what it looks like

Smash Attacks:
Forward: Goku swings his staff from overhead, downward while leaping forward a small bit.
Up: Goku swings his staff over his head, head tilted sideways. He swings while gripping the bottom of the staff so the entire length of the staff swings overhead.
Down: Goku spins in a circle while swinging his staff outward.

Grabs:
Goku grabs with one hand and puts his opponents in a side headlock.
Pummel: Goku noogies them.
Forward: Goku shoves his staff into the opponent and it extends, then he lifts them over his head and throws them forward.
Backward: Goku turns them around, slaps the opponent's neck and then slams his staff into their back.
Up: Goku throws them up, and does a handstand kick so the opponent's back lands on his feet and are sent flying.
Down: Goku places them on the ground and performs an axe kick, where he kicks vertically upwards near his head then slams his heel into the opponent on the ground.

Aerials:
NAir: Goku does a split kick in midair.
FAir: Goku does a kick in vertically in front of him.
BAir: Goku swings his staff behind him while the staff is extending.
UAir: Goku turns upside down and sticks his legs out like helicopter blades and spins.
DAir: Goku uses his staff as a pogo stick and he shoots downward (not as fast as Link's down air). If it sweetspots right at the beginning of the move, it will spike the opponent downward.

Specials:
Neutral: Decoy: Goku creates a decoy of himself that can be physically hit and even does Goku's idle animations. The real Goku is invisible and can move around but not attack. The decoy lasts about 5 seconds and there is a 10 second charge up time for Goku to use the ability again. If the decoy has taken 25% damage, it will explode and inflict a small amount of damage on players around it. Goku can be hit while invisible.

Side: Bo Twirl: Goku twirls his staff in front of him really fast, fast enough to deflect projectiles. If the opponent gets close to him while doing this move, the attack hits the opponent multiple times. (This move is like :pit:'s Side B in Brawl but it doesn't propel you forward as far).

Up: Flying Nimbus Strike: Goku summons his magical cloud and swings his staff from side to side wildly. If you hold the button when using the move, Goku will ascend higher, if you let go, Goku will free fall. (Kind of like :snake:'s up B just that it actually damages opponents).

Down: Transformation: Goku transforms into one of his three friends. Goku will transform into his friends for 8 seconds. He can cancel out of the transformation by pressing another attack other than the down B.
Sanzo (the monk): If he turns into Sanzo, Goku rides on Sanzo's scooter in a straight line forward. If down B is held Goku goes farther on the scooter.
Hakkai (the pig): If Goku turns into Hakkai, he will be invincible for the time being. Since Hakkai can see the future with his clairvoyance, Goku will dodge all attacks by opponents.
Gojo (the kappa): If Goku turns into Gojo, Goku can stun opponents with his down B attack. The stun lasts 3 seconds.

Final Smash:
Gavel of Light: Goku summons the Gavel of Light and holds it up to the heavens. Three beams of light rain down onto the stage and opponents are launched if they touch the beams.

Taunts:
Side: Goku turns around and waves his butt toward the direction you inputted.
Up: Goku crawls to the top of his staff and does a one handed handstand on the top of it.
Down: Goku twirls his staff around and throws it in the air before catching it.

Entrance:
Goku enters the stage riding on his cloud. He gets off and the cloud flies away.

Victory Poses:
Goku twirls his staff around his body and ends it this pose.

Goku climbs on the side of his staff and looks around.

Goku does some kung fu moves while Chao is watching and hurts himself. Chao then runs up to help him.

Arguments:
Nintendo has forgotten about Goku:
Goku and Chao had a cameo in Kirby's Dream Land 3 and Chao had a cameo in the Japanese version of Kirby's Dream Land 2 so Nintendo knows about the two after their initial game. Nintendo was also asked why Yuyuki wasn't ported to the GBA and they responded, so they again have acknowledged his game.

What about the other Goku from DBZ:
Goku is not a reasonabe choice for Smash, because he is an anime character who has no impact on Nintendo or gaming. Goku from Yuyuki is a first party character and I personally want him to be in Smash because I think Goku from Yuyuki could have an interesting moveset and I think he has great potential as a fighter. Sakurai also seems to be the type of person who would add this Goku to mess with people.

Goku would only be a troll character:
One of the most common arguments against Goku is that people think his only merit is that he would be there to just troll people who want DBZ Goku. While there is some truth to that statement, that's not Goku's only merit. While Goku from DBZ and our Goku from Yuyuki do share the same inspiration for their character, Sun Wukong, Son Goku (DBZ) has gone past that inspiration and now is wildy different. Goku from Yuyuki stays pretty true to Sun Wukong. I believe Goku would be a vastly unique addition to the Smash roster, using a mixture of his staff and kung fu.

Actually I kind of want him. He would surely turn out to be quite unique. Plus I like his design. Sign me as a supporter, please!

Great OP, does a good job of selling the character honestly.
However, one thing I want to address:
Goku from Dragon Ball Z is a fourth party character and therefore is not eligible to be put in Smash.
Factually incorrect. Fourth party doesn't exist, so DBZ Goku can't be ineligible based on it.
Goku would probably never be chosen, true, but it's isn't because he's a fourth party that doesn't exist.

I suggest you reword it to, "Goku is not a reasonabe choice for Smash, because he is an anime character who has no impact on Nintendo or gaming."

I've been a Goku supporter for awhile. I do believe there is already a Goku support thread, though? (This monkey Goku, not making a joke)

I mentioned this in another thread, but take if you takeGoku, give him Kilik and Xiba's moves from SoulCalibur, with perhaps a Kamehameha equivalent as his Final Smash (unless there's something more fitting from his game; I've never played it), and you have all the Journey to the West expies in one, first-party Nintendo Retro!

Which would be amazing just for the possibilities alone (Kilik was my main in SC2, DBZ fan-trolling, a staff-wielder like Goku hasn't been done yet in any real capacity beyond a few moves from Palutena [that I can recall], has the enormous potential to be highly unique, another monkey, etc.).

No, Goku doesn't do a kamahameha but an important item from his game is the Gavel of Light which I used for his Final Smash. I might look up Xiba and Kilik later.

Kilik was introduced in SoulCalibur 1, based from Soul Blade vet Soeng-Mina, and fights with a Bo Staff. He has appeared in all games from SC1 on. However, in SoulCalibur V, Xiba was introduced with a slightly-modified style of Kilik's, while Kilik was relegated to an Edge Master role by mimicking all the Male Fighters' styles. Xiba is the true JttW expy, with newcomers Natsu, Leixia, and vet Maxi rounding out the rest of the crew.

As Xiba and Kilik fight with a Bo Staff (like Goku is depicted with in the above art), and come from a Namco-produced game, I figure the best chance for the character would be to be based primarily on the way they use the Bo Staff since Namco helped to develop the game.

Well, I am trying to figure out a balance between him using the staff and kung fu (I want him to use monkey style kung fu since he's a monkey and is a martial arts master from the title).

Most people do, on another Goku thread (it was closed since the ballot wasn't announced at the time) the OP had a joke where it showed Goku from DBZ first and then below it was the actual Goku from Yuyuki.

Oh I like that. Didn't you also give me the idea for the supporters name on my Donbe and Hikari thread? If Goku gets in (MAKE IT HAPPEN SOCCERGUY), I want Donbe and Hikari at the same time.
Yes, I was the one who accidentally gave you the idea. Both Goku and the Oni Slaying Duo (Donbe & Jikari) needs to be in Smash the same time since they are the Famicom Bros. after all.

Well, Hikari is a girl...
btw any thoughts on my moveset so far.
The moveset itself seems pretty great to me, got that right amount of martial arts and staff attacks. As a Pit main who misses the old Side Bide, the Bo Staff Twirl did a great job at making a scrapped move more useful (with the deflections and all). The Down Special involving his friends sounds like a great strategic move since it happens at random, making him one of the more unpredictable fighters.

If there's one thing I suggest, his Down Air needs to be him using his staff as a pogo stick and dropping to the ground. Having him bounce off the heads of his foes sounds like something that's mischievous enough for a monkey to do.

btw I probably should add that the side B doesn't propel you forward like Pit's old side B, he just moves forward a tiny bit.

I don't know how hard I'd laugh if that happens! I'll support. The character has moveset potential to accommodate for the trolling.

Is there any way to make the move function the same but visually look more like a bo staff twirl? This is an example of what I mean. Specifically the 32-37 second mark, which I linked to, but the whole video does a good job of portraying how Namco could['ve] help[ed] design Goku with as a staff-wielder.

With a visualization of what kind of moves a bo staff fighter in another game uses, would that be relevant to the purposes of that aspect of your moveset for Goku?

Well, I imagined a two handed bo twirl just in front of him. Smash doesn't work in a 3D plane so I can't make him twirl on the sides. UNLESS, you want me to make it so that he twirls all the way around his body.

btw any thoughts on my moveset.

I was meaning the latter, as it seems like it would be very hard to twirl a staff somewhat vertically right in front of you even with two hands. Having him twirl it on his sides, constantly switching hands to do so, tough; would (or should) produce the same result, just with a different (and some more plausible?) visual. He would also hit enemies behind him too, as a way to differentiate it from Pit's old move without necessarily changing it to something unrecognizable.

As far as your moveset, I like it! I haven't played Yuyuki, so I can't comment on the Decoy as a Neutral B, and I'm unsure of the Transformation as even for a small period, it's something Sakurai tried to avoid this time around, and would be more taxing on the system and to develop as a character. But other than that, I can't think of anything to complain about. I was gonna say that you should have him swing upwards using the staff to propel his weight as an UTilt but then I saw you put it as his FTilt, haha.

He twirls it in front of him. Might change it to the double sides motion though.
Decoy and Transformation isn't in Yuyuki (its a text based adventure), but Sun Wukong in SMITE uses it. Goku is based of Sun Wukong and in the legends, I'm pretty sure Sun Wukong could do these things. Thing with the transformation is that it isn't another character with a different moveset, its just a move (with random affects yes, but one move none the less).

I will add you onto the list. btw you seem to support a lot of the characters I own the threads for.
I like supporting a lot of characters that I think would work for Smash Bros. I guess you could say we have similar taste in characters.

Hey, can you add me to the supporter list, please?

I'll be honest and say that I don't really expect Goku, here, in Smash 3DS/Wii U. This is mainly because recent appearances were arguably too big of a consideration for the roster this time around, and even though the DLC has been stated to be fan-service from here on out, I'm not sure if those who know the character are showing up in huge numbers on the Fighter Ballot. That said, I wouldn't be at all surprised if he were to be considered for Smash 5, since I expect more older faces to get a shot there.

Nice work on the move-set and generally knowing your stuff about Goku and Yuyuki, by the way. :smash:

There is one thing that you may want to correct, however - Kirby's Dream Land 3 is not one of Sakurai's games. It was directed by Shinichi Shimomura, and produced by Hiroaki Suga.

Also, to add some more info, you may be interested to know that Chao had a cameo in the Japanese version of Kirby's Dream Land 2, and apparently there's a reference to Yuyuki on that game's sound test screen, as well. :)

I feel like Diddy would get hella jealous at Goku. Goku would probably steal Diddy's girlfriend.

I support if only to see Diddy suffer.

I support.

Also to troll DBZ Goku voters.

I'd be down if it was to troll DBZ Goku voters. But i'd give him a new design at least, this thing is hideous to look at.

I really like his design, myself. But then, I have a fondness for the style of artwork that Nintendo used for a number of games in that era and slightly afterward. :smash:

Supporting based on the reaction if he makes it. I could see it now, Kakarat supporters rejoicing then raging after seeing which Goku it is, and Kakarat haters raging then rejoicing once they see which Goku it is.

The ultimate troll.

I don't think Goku stands much of a chance either but he surely has a better chance than that other Goku. For the moveset I literally spent around 3 days looking at bo staff and shaolin staff moves along with some kung fu. My knowledge of Yuyuki comes from the internet lol. Thanks for the correction btw.

I don't think the design is awful. Its outdated, but it isn't awful.

It'd be awesome if Sakurai announced Goku as a playable DLC character, than show which Goku it is.

btw I added all of you guys to the Warriors of the West.

I voted no:crazy:
Nah just kidding I voted yes. It's weird that Goku has the best results of anyone else in that poll.
