#094 - Gengar

Gengar is a ghost/poison type Pokemon, introduced in Generation 1. He (or she) is the final form of Gastly. Gengar, alongside his pre-evolutions, are the first Ghost type Pokemon that were introduced.

Why should Gengar be in Smash?

He is one of the most popular Pokemon and has a lot of moveset potential. He would also be the first ghost fighter to be playable in Smash.

What would Gengar be like in Smash?

Gengar would a fast character, as his speed stat is very high in games. Being a ghost, Gengar would likely be very light fighter. Gengar's moveset would be inspired from not only his moves from the games, but also from Pokken. His Final Smash would be Mega Gengar. Most of his moves would be Ghost-type, and while Mewtwo already has Shadow Ball, that doesn't mean he can't use it and Gengar still has many other Ghost type moves, like Shadow Punch, Night Shade and Nightmare, that he can use in Smash. Gengar can also learn many Psychic, Dark and Poison type moves, either by leveling up or by TM.

Arguments against Gengar:
We already have four Generation 1 Pokemon in Smash.
That is true, but Generation 1 is the most popular generation, and we had five Gen 1 Pokemon in Brawl.

Pokemon doesn't deserve more characters.
Pokemon is the second best-selling video game franchise of all-time, only behind Mario, who has seven reps. Pokemon getting seven reps would be justifiable, especially considering how many characters with moveset potential it has.

Gengar would be a random choice.
He is iconic and very popular Pokemon (he got into Pokken with fan demand), so he wouldn't be the most random choice. Gengar also has received very positive reception in media, and he had a major role in the original Pokemon Mystery Dungeon games.

We already have a DLC Pokemon for Smash.
That is true, and while Pokemon getting a second DLC rep is very unlikely, voting him in ballot might help him to get considered for Smash 5. However, Pokemon has received 1-2 additional characters in every Smash game, and Pokemon characters are well known and will most likely sell well, so virtually any Pokemon character is a huge moneymaking opportunity.

What are Gengar's chances to get in as DLC?
Like the title of this thread says, he has only a ghost of a chance, sadly. He barely has any support for Smash, and has a lot of competition. But that doesn't mean we can't support him!

Movesets
Feel free to post your moveset ideas.

Neutral-B: Sludge Bomb
Gengar lobs a ball of sludge forward in an arc and briefly poisons whoever it hits, racking up small bits of damage. Sludge Bomb can be charged into a bigger ball with longer lasting poison damage, but you can't "carry" the charge like Samus' Charge Shot for example, making it more like Bowser Jr.'s Clown Cannon.

Down-B: Hypnosis
Gengar shoots a slow short ranged beam from his eyes. Anybody hit by it falls asleep, with the sleep time being longer depending on the opponent's damage. Range is about twice as far as Mewtwo's Disable. Also like Mewtwo's Disable, Hypnosis will only work if Gengar and the opponent are facing each other.

Side-B: Hex
Gengar sticks his arm out and makes a small ghostly energy ball explode in his hand. Does mediocre damage on it's own, but does double damage if the opponent is asleep, poisoned, dizzy, etc.

Up-B: Dark Pulse
Gengar quickly flies straight in whichever direction you push while surrounded by a shadowy aura. Anybody he touches during the moves takes damage.

By @Bobert77

Speed: Walk 2/10 (~:4wario:) Run (floats) 5/10 (~:4rob:)
Jump: 5/10 (~:4mario:) Airspeed 8/10 (~:4zss:)
Weight: 7/10 (~:4megaman:) Fall speed 1/10 (~:4jigglypuff:)

Other characteristics:
-Two Jumps
-No Wall Jump
-No Wall Cling
-No Tether
-Invincibility on Up B

----

A: a quick arm swipe
A+A: a second arm swipe
A+A+A: a quick headbutt with it's head spikes

ftilt: Lick-smacks opponent with tongue (stuns at higher percents)
dtilt: does a quick sweep with his tail, trips
utilt: a small upwards hop hitting with his head spikes

FSmash: Shadow Punch-Fades to Black and does a powerful punch that moves him forward slightly
DSmash: Waves of shadowy energy ripples outward on the ground,
USmash: Night Shade-an upwards blast of shadow energy above Gengar's head

Nair: Night Shade-multiple hits trapping
Fair: Shadow Claw-a quick strong swipe forward
Bair: a backwards drop kick
Uair: Shadow Claw-quick overhead swipes
Dair: Night Shade-strong downward blast of shadow energy, spikes

Grab: Haze-traps foe in a shadowy haze
Pummel: Haze damages opponent
FThrow: a small shadow blast shoots opponent forward
DThrow: slams opponent into the ground doing multiple hits with his haze (Zelda and Ness dthrow)
BThrow: a quick circle throw backwards (Mario and Wario bthrow)
UThrow: tosses opponent upwards onto head and back spikes

Neutral B: Sludge Bomb-works like it does in Gen 6, arcs forward and a blast of poison knocks the opponent away

Side B: Hypnosis-Shoots a hypnotic beam forward, if the opponent faces Gengar within the beam they will fall asleep, range is similar to Pac-Man's grab

Down B: Dream Eater-command grab-Works like a mix between Wario's bite and Robin's Nosferatu, doesn't do damage unless the opponent was sleeping though it still works as a grab, can drain health to heal Gengar if opponent was sleeping

Up B: Phantom Force-A Teleporting move, initial invincibility frames, vanishes and warps, reappears and does a decent amount of damage, also isn't affected by sheilding, but requires a fair amount of cool down amoung landing, covers about the same distance as Sheik's Vanish
(note: Gengar doesn't actually learn Phantom Force in game, for some reason, but it fits his character and Smash is not about what they can actually do but what works for the character, remember Rayquaza uses Dig in Brawl when he doesn't learn it in game)

Final Smash
Mega Gengar-Dark Pulse

-Traps nearby opponents, will send out a Dark Pulse which hits repeatedly with waves of darkness, then sends opponents flying with a powerful final hit

Taunts
-becomes a black silhouette chuckles intently
-waves his tongue mischieviously
-holds his hand to his mouth and snickers to himself

By @BarnOwlsRSoAdorable (from an old Gengar support thread)
Playstyle:
Gengar is a character that mainly focuses on being annoying to fit his role in Mystery Dungeon (still no spoilers!). He has Embargo which prevents an opponent from using items, Taunt which makes opponents only able to attack Gengar and no other characters for a few seconds and Sucker Punch which can be unexpected. However, Gengar is a very light character and has a bigger hitbox than most light characters so he'll be KOed the fastest of any character.

Moves:
A: Shadow Claw- Gengar slashes. The maximum combo is 5 slashes
A side: Lick- Gengar swings his tongue at the opponent.
A up: Payback- Gengar slams upward
A down: Night Shade- creates a shadow barrier around Gengar for 1 second

B: Embargo- If it works, the opponent is not allowed to use items (except Smash Ball)
B side: Poison Jab- 5 punches that do damage and make opponents take damage over time
B up: Sucker Punch- Gengar teleports and lands and uppercut. This is also used for recovery
B down: Taunt- Gengar is the only opponent that can be hit for about 3 seconds

Pummel: Licks the opponent
Front Throw: Gengar smashes the opponent away
Back Throw Gengar swings the foe away
Up Throw: Gengar slashes the opponent upward
Down Throw: Gengar throws a shadow ball at the opponent

Final Smash: Hex- Gengar sends a giant ghostly vortex that brings foes near it and brings them in it. If a foe is in it, they will take damage until the vortex explodes doing serious knockback.

By GameFAQs user called Davidk92 (http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/633202-super-smash-bros-for-wii-u/68909236):
AAA: Gengar performs three swift slashes with its claws.
A>: Gengar makes a funny face, somehow knocking the opponent back with it [Mean Look].
A^: Gengar swings its arm above its head, releasing a trail of dark energy.
Av: Gengar dives into its shadow then leaps out, headbutting anyone above it.

Smash>: Gengar punches forward, a burst of dark energy flying from its fist [Shadow Punch].
Smash^: Gengar crouches down and extends the spikes on its back upwards.
Smashv: Gengar releases a powerful shockwave along the ground from itself [Dark Pulse].

Air A: Gengar slashes with its claws.
Air A>: Gengar lashes its tongue forward [Lick].
Air A^: Gengar flips upside down, striking above with its tail.
Air Av: Gengar stomps downwards.

Grab: Gengar sends a shadow of itself forward to grab the opponent, which turns into the real Gengar.
Grab A: Gengar bites the opponent.
Grab A>: Gengar jumps up and drop kicks the opponent away.
Grab A<: Gengar ducks behind the opponent and smacks them away [Sucker Punch].
Grab A^: Gengar dives into its shadow and appears under the opponent, launching them upwards.
Grab Av: Gengar throws the opponent down and body slams them.

B: Hypnosis/Dream Eater. Gengar releases a pink wave from its eyes, sending anyone hit by it to sleep. If the wave hits someone who is already asleep, then it deals moderate damage while reducing Gengar's damage meter by half the damage dealt.
B>: Night Shade. Gengar's eyes glow and it releases a powerful burst of energy directly in front of it. The burst of energy does dark damage and is unaffected by counters and if the opponent is in the centre of the burst will even shatter their guard. However, the attack has limited range and only affects those directly in front of Gengar.
B^: Hex. Gengar summons a demonic eye above itself and slowly rises into the air, cackling. The eye surrounds itself and Gengar in a barrier of dark energy, damaging anyone they touch. However the barrier does not stop projectiles and the attack can be cancelled.
Bv: Confuse Ray. Gengar releases a ball of light from its mouth which suddenly bursts. Anyone hit by the burst is immediately stunned, staggering as if their shield had just been destroyed for a few seconds.

Final Smash: Mega Gengar. Gengar pulls out the Gengarite, cackles and then eats it, transforming into Mega Gengar. As Mega Gengar, Gengar retains it's usual fighting style but becomes faster and less vulnerable to damage, while its B attacks become more powerful. This Final Smash lasts 13 seconds.

I wanna be the first supporter in this thread! Gengar is the best choice for the next Pokemon character for sure.

I think I may have whipped up a moveset for him a while back...

I'm trying to make some palette swaps, but since I have only MS paint, they're going to be fairly bad. I might post some later.

1. Normal Gengar
2. Shiny Mega Gengar
3. Misdreavus
4. Banette
5. Gastly/Red & Blue Gengar

I think Gengar would be the first Ghost type Pokemon Sakurai would choose. It's also playable in that Pokken game. Gengar would be pretty hype though. We don't have a ghost fighter yet in Smash Bros so it would be either Gengar or King Boo.

As long as it has a Pink color or a Clefable color palette as one of it's costumes.

Random note: I only skimmed the RTC thread for Gengar's day (sadly couldn't be around for it), but why was everyone so concerned that Mewtwo having Shadow Ball made Gengar less likely or appealing? Gengar couldn't learn Shadow Ball until gen 2 and he didn't even learn it by level up until gen 3. It's far from his signature move; Lick, Hypnosis, Dream Eater and Confuse Ray are all much more closely associated with it.

Here's my idea for his special moves.

I found this Gengar moveset from GameFAQs (made by some user called Davidk92): http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/633202-super-smash-bros-for-wii-u/68909236

AAA: Gengar performs three swift slashes with its claws.
A>: Gengar makes a funny face, somehow knocking the opponent back with it [Mean Look].
A^: Gengar swings its arm above its head, releasing a trail of dark energy.

Smash>: Gengar punches forward, a burst of dark energy flying from its fist [Shadow Punch].

And another one by @BarnOwlsRSoAdorable from an old Gengar support thread:

I really like those palette swap colors. I don't always use alternate colors, but I'd totally use the Clefable one.

I support. I always liked Gengar.

I definitely think Gengar would make a good addition as long as they focused on the tricky side of him like Embargo and maybe some kind of grab like Robin's Nosferatu that would poison someone which would deal damage over time.

I would like to make a comment on a few of the counter-arguments though

We already have four Generation 1 Pokemon in Smash.
That is true, but Generation 1 is the most popular generation, and we had five Gen 1 Pokemon in Brawl.
Brawl did have multiple Gen 1 pokemon, however all those pokemon are argubly the most iconic of Gen 1 minus Jiggs because of Japan Love. While Gengar is definitely popular and has made appearances outside of his core games (Pokken Tournament for example) he does have competition indeed amongst the popular but not top tier Gen 1 rep and pokemon rep in general.

Also in the leadup to Brawl we did get FireRed and LeafGreen which helps with the relevancy of those inclusions.

Pokemon doesn't deserve more characters.
Pokemon is the second best-selling video game franchise of all-time, only behind Mario, who has seven reps. Pokemon getting seven reps would be justifiable, especially considering how many characters with moveset potential it has.
I really don't like the word deserved being used mostly because it's completely subjective. I think a more appropriate framing of the argument could be based on the available resources for DLC development, what DLC characters would suit the standard smash criteria (in terms of moveset, variety, relevancy, series representation etc...).

I think Pokemon as DLC in Smash 4 hasn't got the biggest momentum behind it but 1-2 new reps in a Smash 5 would definitely at least warranting consideration.

Gengar would be a random choice.
He is iconic and very popular Pokemon (he got into Pokken with fan demand), so he wouldn't be the most random choice. Also, there are people who think that Jigglypuff and Greninja were random choices.
Nothing against the Gengar aspect of this, but more towards the counter examples provided. Red and Blue came out in the years up to Smash 64. Jigglypuff was quite a predominant pokemon in the TV show and is hugely popular in Japan. Greninja is just hugely popular from the latest generation and also has high relevancy. I think highlighting Gengar's inclusion in other games and media in general as opposed to trying to highlight alledged weaknesses in others would be better here.

We already have a DLC Pokemon for Smash.
That is true, and while Pokemon getting a second DLC rep is unlikely, Sakurai has never stated that a franchise can't have two DLC reps.
This is a pretty weak argument, its essentially "It's not impossible". I think this further highlights the weakness of Pokemon apart from Mewtwo as DLC but definitely could be contenders for Smash 5.

I definitely think Gengar would make a good addition as long as they focused on the tricky side of him like Embargo and maybe some kind of grab like Robin's Nosferatu that would poison someone which would deal damage over time.

I would like to make a comment on a few of the counter-arguments though

Yes, I know some of those arguments are bad, I'm not very good making them and I wasn't originally going to include any, but then I saw that almost every other thread had some arguments in the OP, so I decided make some. I'm trying to fix some of those arguments.

For the "two Pokemon as DLC characters," I'd mention that virtually any Pokemon character is a huge moneymaking opportunity, and all three of the first Smash games added more than one Pokemon to the game.

Probably want to include blue/red variants of colours also. I reckon white gengar with like red eyes/teeth would be pretty cool (inspired by robin and rosa's cwhite colour scheme).

Which is fair enough. I'm happy to go over that section and make some suggestions/changes/format if you like in regards to that specific section or the OP overall

Yes, suggestions would really help me to make those arguments better. I already fixed some, don't know if they are any better.

And that white Gengar alt is based on Shiny Mega Gengar (which has grey eyes), but I guess I could change his eyes to red. I'm probably going to do more palette swaps later today.

That's a good suggestion, I'm adding it to the argument.

EDIT: Some more MS Paint palette swaps:

1. Normal Gengar
2. R/S/E/FR/LG/D/P/Pt Gengar (different shade of purple)
3. Misdreavus
4. Original Sugimori art Gengar
5. Banette
6. Gastly/Red & Blue Gengar
7. Clefable
8. Reverse-colored Gengar (Red body, purple eyes)

Since everybody but Little Mac can have only 8 palette swaps, white Gengar palette swaps are extras: the upper one is based on Shiny Mega Gengar, while below one isn't based on anything.

You mentioned his appearance in the PMD series, but if we want a rep that is best known for appearances in PMD, it'd have to be Grovyle, one of the heroes from Explorers of Time/Darkness/Sky. He's popular, would fulfill the need for a Gen III rep, and makes a perfect fit. Not saying Gengar isn't, but he doesn't have the support Grovyle does.

I didn't say that Gengar should represent PMD series, I only mentioned that he had a fairly important role in the first PMD games.

Mentioning that he had a important role in the series = / = saying that he should represent the series.

I support Gengar for Smash! He is my favorite pokemon, and is the ideal ghost type rep.

O woe is to us Gengar fans, and pokemon fans alike. Gengar is by miles my favorite pokemon, heck probably the character I would like most to see get in Sm4sh.
The problem is that there are so many pokemon (in the game series, not talking about smash) that our fanbase is so divided as pokemon fans for specific one to get in smash.
I really hope Sakurai has some sense of what happened with Pokken, because then he'd see what a big following he has.
Another unfortunate thing is that fans would go bananas if another pokemon was added in before a character from a newcoming series.
Anyway, I hope this thread grows.

Yes, all of those are (sadly) big problems for Gengar, and I've accepted that Gengar most likely won't happen, at least in this Smash. However, as the OP says, this doesn't stop us from supporting Gengar.
Also, I too hope this thread grows, I've seen many members that apparently want Gengar but don't seem to be interested of this thread for some reason, I've even mentioned this thread to some of them.

Yeah, lack of faith in Gengar making it in might be a big factor in people not seeking this thread out. I only recently got into Smashboards and I'd say it's a lot better of a place than r/smashbros (as it should be, being a specialty forum). But I wish more people browsed it more often and participated when they see a thread they like, namely Gengar fans and the like. Maybe the view counts are misleading, but it just feels like smashboards doesn't get enough attention.

I've always thought a ghost fighter would be really unique and interesting. Gengar would be able to pull it off well since he has actual feet and an wide arsenal of attacks.

I put together some palette swaps for fun:

Yes, those look awesome, much better than my MS Paint-made palette swaps. Adding it to the OP.

I definitely support this. I already used my ballot vote for Gengar. Gengar is even the favorite Pokemon of Ken Sugimori, the artist of Pokemon!

These are the rankings of Pokemon in SourceGaming's character poll. Gengar ranked #52 among 438 characters, and was the fourth highest-ranking Pokemon.

I'm positively surprised about this.

Found some fanmade Gengar splash art, first one made by someone called SwiftGreninja, second one made by someone called Elemental-Aura, don't know who made the third one.
