No games can match Smash Bros., BUT some can try. I'm making a list of all of the games that play like Super Smash Bros. These games include official and independently made games (Super Smash Flash). I need help finding more games, so please list all you can find.

1. Jump Super Stars
Platforms: DS
Graphics: 2D
Gameplay: stock (or timed KO fest?), KO's are delivered by ring out or a depleted stamina bar.
Wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jump_Super_Stars
Video: http://youtube.com/watch?v=snOBSt0xknc&feature=related
Description: a Japanese only released game which was the fastest selling game for the DS until Animal Crossing W.W. came out. There are standard moves and specials similar to Smash, and KOing opponents involves destroying their life bar, or knocking them off the stage like Smash. the game is 2-4 players (and maybe a 1p mode I haven't played most of the games on this list first hand), and each character is customizable. You have a screen on the bottom with a grid to be filled by comic-like panels that represent your character. Large panels are individual characters you can play as (only one large panel, one character, multiple panels, you can change between characters) and each character had about 3 panels for different strength forms. Medium panels act as quick assist trophies doing normally one attack to opponents. Small panels boost stats of the character if placed correctly. 160!!!!! characters, 32 stages, and 75 missions. The only bad thing is that every character is from anime or manga or whatever you want to call them, then again smash bros. is essentially anime. Anyway this is a true Smash Bros. for the DS.

2. Jump Ultimate Stars
Platforms: DS
Graphics: 2D
Gameplay: various, main mode people play is stock (you loose lives falling off or getting the stamina knocked out of you
Wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jump_Ultimate_Stars
Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4U2LTyU1O2Y&feature=related
Description: an improved version of the first game. 300 characters now (Hikaru no Go and Mr. Fullswing don't return... whoever they are), more stages (I don't know how many), and more gameplay mechanics than the first. Now their is also Wifi and DS download play. There is a translated version rom here: http://files.filefront.com/JUS+Trans2nds/;10221386;/fileinfo.html

EDIT: I just played the game fully myself, you customize your character with a deck, each deck (which is 5 by 4 blocks if i can remember) is where you put your collected komas. these are comic shapes used to fill up your customizable deck. you have character komas, support komas, and stat-boosting komas. you have to have at least one of each to play that deck. support komas are basically summonable assist trophys you can use though out the match, if they are allowed, for comboing and such, these range from normally 2-3 squares. multiple allow you to have more assist guys. the support komas range from blasting opponants with kamehamehas to healing you, use them wisely. you can have multiple characters that you can switch between during the match, and you will automatically switch to the next available character should you die. more characters = more stock, loose them all and your done. these spaces range from 4-8. and yes, there are cheap and noobish characters. stat changing komas give bonuses to whichever character they face (you choose which character they support, and they can only do one). they range from giving you a 3rd jump, to making you immune to poison effects, and so forth. each take up 1 space. most people search for the ultimate deck, but many decks can be good if you know how to use them well. online is easy, you generally get hooked up to japan, and its very similar to hooking up in brawl, minus the waiting room. matches online are typically set to stock, no support komas. you unlock each and every koma through 1player mode, i cheated to get all the characters at the beginning, cause i don't feel like playing 100 matches as luffy and naruto. there is no % bar that makes people fly farther as the game progresses, but a devestating attack will send you considerably off of the side, which are walled until broken by the way. switching characters and activating support komas is done by tapping on their komas with the stylus, also you need to set a leader character to start off as, and you can set shortcuts so that character switching or koma activating is done by L or R. ...phew!

3. Super Smash Flash (+ 2)
Platforms: Online
Graphics: 2D
Gameplay: stock and timed KO fest
Site: http://www.mcleodgaming.com/?page=home
Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=20gZZIQNidw&feature=related
Description: an online flash version of the game with simpler gameplay and characters from Smash and other games. Gameplay is only one button for attacks. They are making a sequel with improved physics and fighting like specials and smashes and taunts and final smashes. I've played this game before.

Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s1tXkMTq5dE&feature=related
Description: another Japanese game featuring Optimus Prime, Simon Belmont, the Japanese Barbie, Bomberman and Solid Snake (and more). Certainly sounds and looks like smash, but fails when it comes to gameplay, basically it's "attack #1" and "attack #2". you win by a coin battle-like system after reaching a certain limit

Graphics: 3D
Gameplay: Stamina
Wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Powerstone
Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rJKKjdnW6uA&feature=related
Description: I put this game in because it might not have the Smash Bros. formula, but it is almost in the same genre, the main difference being that this is not on a 2d plane. and that it is only a stamina type game. You fight and do combos and pick up weapons. Pretty fun. I have also played this game's demo.

7. Sonic Battle

Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yC0w3NqfwE0
Description: These game is not at all like the gameplay to smash in terms of genre. However, they are both very large cross-over games. Mugen has a standard fighting engine, but people could create their own characters for fighting. Card Sagas Wars is a more organized fighting game, with sprites of the same style for each character. many of the characters are remakes of brawl characters, like DK and Bowser. The combo system is more advanced/easier than Mugen.

I owned Battle Stadium D.O.N., I can kinda explain it...

First the characters were only from 3 popular anime series: Dragonball, One Piece and Naruto (hence the name D.O.N.). The playable chars were:
Goku, Vegeta, Piccolo, Trunks, Cell, Buu, Frieza, Gohan (Dragonball), Luffy, Nami, Zoro, Usopp, Chopper (One Piece), Naruto, Sasuke, Sakura, Kakashi, Rock Lee and Gaara (Naruto).

Characters battle, using basic moves {B Button} and special moves {L Button} the throw button and guard button defaults are the same as SSBM.

So how is it different other than controls? The basic setup for 4 player melee is on a 150 second timer where the winner is the character who has collected and retains the most life at the end of the match. However a character with enough HP to go into "BURST" can KO remaining players and win without a timer.

When a character is sent off-screen; instead of being out of the game for the match, a target will come up and the player lands at appointed target. Falling off the stage is the FASTEST WAY TO LOSE; and is quite easy as the stages are quite small; the smallest I believe is the Merry Go {One Piece Ship}.

There is also an energy bar. Special moves {L} costs a small amount of energy to use; while Super moves {X} cost 3/4 of the bar. It is NOT a good idea to spam Super moves; as it leaves you vulnerable to your opponent's super. Also Super moves steal a lot of HP if they make contact.

Moves can be charged to increase damage. A fully charged Super Move can easily drop a first-place to a last-place in seconds; or if in burst it can KO all remaining players.

lol@jump superstars. <3 luffy and yusuke.

neway, the only one i know is a simple online flash game on newgrounds. i think it was called newgrounds rumble and it starred all the most famous newgrounds flash characters (obv based directly off smash) but it actually is very well made and entertaining for a few hours or so (for a flash game).

no, it's a collection of many similar games to smash, smash flash was made independently, but it still had the formula, and the sequel is much better than the original.

anyway, i'm gunna add

Card saga wars
Digimon Rumble arena 1 + 2
One Piece: Gear Spirit
and more

Theres a playstation Digimon game almost exactly like Smash. Forget the name of it, but my friend owns it, and we burned on it for awhile in between Smash 64 and Melee. It's no Super Smash, but it was pretty decent. Anyone know what I'm talking about?

I feel compelled to comment, because I both love Sonic Battle and really really dislike Super Smash Flash. The latter is of terrible quality, and I could (given the graphics) easily whip up a better physics engine in flash - which is saying a lot, because I'm no flash expert. I don't hold it against the creator, though, because it's his self-proclaimed first flash game (and boy, does it show.)

BUT ANYWAY. Had to get that off my chest, sorry. On the opposite end of the spectrum, Sonic Battle is an awesome game, though not without its (minor) flaws. It, of course, is overshadowed by Smash, but still. It's definitely worth playing. Especially for the customization; one character, which is essentially the protagonist, can eventually learn and employ any of the other characters' moves, but not all at once, of course. You get to customize his moveset throughout. It's pretty sweet.

Hopefully someday I can have a game of mine up on that list. Been working/slacking on a flash for years now, just need to finally get my act (read: graphics) together to make it...

Digimon rumble 2 was like smash( the closest thing I could get on the PS2, **** brothers not getting a GC) Only difference was lives and health instead of percents, also digimons evolving

Guilty Gear: Dust Strikers is very Jump Super/Ultimate Stars-esque. It strays away from the 2D fighting from the other Guilty Gear games and gives a 2-4 player fighting mode with platforms like in Jump and simple one-direction moves and specials like in Smash.

Games just like Smash as in working the same way as Smash down to basic things such as possessing of airblock/airdodge, combining 2D with 3D elements, no Low-Hi-Mid mixup system, a breakable shield and custom combos and almost no preset strings?

None. There are many "similar" games that share a few game elements with Smash, however. Most of the games people list in this thread are merely games that deviate from the "conventional" fighters, hence they must be similar to Smash even if they have very little in common with Smash.

It might just be me, but isn't links to roms bad?

I dunno, I frequent too many different forums.

Anyway! Jump Ultimate is one of my favorite from that list, lots of hell breaks loose on that game. XD

I'll add these when I get the chance next time:

Card saga wars/mugen
Digimon Rumble arena 1 + 2
One Piece: Gear Spirit
Newgrounds Rumble
Onimusha Blade Warriors
Wiewtiful Joe games (red hot rumble)
one piece: grand battle series
SSB: NES
Guilty Gear: Dust Strikers

mugen is tied with card sagas wars because their gameplay style is not similar to smash at all, but it had other similarities to smash that i'll explain

i'm linking to the rom only because it is translation, i guess you could patch the rom yourself, but the youtube video had the link to it anyway, so only download it legally, you hear.

@ Yuna, of course there are no games "EXACTLY LIKE SMASH" there would be no point to have a post that saids that there are none. As you can plainly see, these are games that are very similar to that of the smash brothers series. Most people get a bit crazy over each new smash game release and have nothing to do, wouldn't it be useful if there was a list of games that are in the rare genre that smash is in. the title is this way to avoid sounding like an ad or spam. for example "Games like Super Smash Bros." could mean "various games including super smash bros." and is generally confusing, along with the (including DS) at the end, but "Games just like Super Smash Bros." implies that this is a list of games very similar to the series.

Power Stone is a predecessor and great fun. J!US is anime-flavoured crack though, I recommend it fully.

I'm also going to add gameplay videos to each entry.

And to help some trying to find these games, many anime series contain games that play like smash, i guess that most anime series naturally gravitate toward this weird genre of fighting games. I'd consider the genre of smash as a crossover, platform, fighting game so most games that have qualities like that would make the list.

I added a todo list to the first post for me so it gets less confusing. check up on that for some newer games I guess. I added 2 rave master games (anime), they are different, one is like power stone, the other like jump stars. I will also try to organize games through sub-categories like players, sub genre, Damage type, Winning Conditions (KO types, like stamina or coin), and other quick, easy info.

Soul Calibur? Not the same style, but it also has many crossovers. Tekken, Spawn, Legend of Zelda, and most recently Star Wars.

Much. The characters no longer move a foot whenever they turn around, momentum is controllable, collision detection is actually at least somewhat reliable, and the aerial attacks are different from the ground attacks. I just hope that they/he does a lot of work on refining the graphics, speed, etc; it seems waaay too slow to be enjoyable, and the funky pixellations kind of grate on my nerves, personally. (Also, Mario should not be smaller than Kirby.) But, it is a demo.

Not that I'm some kind of conoisseur of Flash/Smash Bros. knockoffs. I think I just have exceedingly high standards for anything that bears the name Smash.

Thats kind of the point of the thread, won't someone read the intro? First 2 sentences: "No games can match Smash Bros., BUT some can try. I'm making a list of all of the games that play like Super Smash Bros."
This isn't a debate on which game is the best, it's the games that are in the same obscure genre of Smash Bros.

Dude, you forgot Kingdom Hearts.

It may not be of the same genre, but it's pretty much more or less Disney's answer to Smash, if you really, REALLY think about it. It even uses world icons like Smash does.
