The Gods, and the Return of the Godslayer

The big story at EGLX will be the battle between the current MIOM top 5 -- Armada, Hungrybox, Leffen, Mango, and Mew2King.

Although Leffen still cannot enter the US due to visa issues, many eyes will be on him as he makes his big North American return this weekend. Despite his inconsistency in Europe, Leffen has shown that he can easily bounce back in the past. Additionally, fans will be looking forward to the Swede's long-awaited rematches against his biggest rivals - Armada, Hungrybox, Mango, and Mew2King. Leffen traded sets with Armada at BEAST 6, Hungrybox has improved greatly since their last set, and there is the prospect of Leffen vs. Mango Fox dittos happening for the first time in tournament. Even though the bracket is looking harder than ever for Stockholm's pride and joy, a strong mindset could very well give Leffen what he needs to win EGLX.

Heavy favorite Armada will be representing Sweden alongside Leffen this weekend. His 2016 has been great, although his records against Hungrybox and Mango have been closer than they were last year. Armada reclaimed his throne at Smash Summit 2 this past weekend by defeating Hungrybox, Mango, and Mew2King from the loser's bracket after falling victim to a stunning upset from Mew2King in the Winner's Bracket. Although Leffen, Hungrybox, Mango, and possibly even Mew2King will be challenges for him this weekend, Armada has shown time and time again that his champion mentality and brilliant consistency can overcome any obstacle in his way.

Hungrybox is having quite possibly his best year ever in Melee, and the Jigglypuff specialist will only be looking to continue his success this weekend. Over the last 6 months, Hungrybox has shown that he can beat any Fox in the world whether it is Armada, Mew2King, or his longtime demon, Mango. However, there's one Fox that Hungrybox is eager for revenge on: Leffen. In their last meeting at HTC Throwdown, Leffen dominated Hungrybox in two fairly one-sided sets. Despite that, the refinements that Hungrybox has made in his play will make for a very exciting rematch between the two. If Hungrybox can overcome the Fox gauntlet by rapidly adapting in between sets, he may have a good shot at taking home the gold at EGLX.

Mango has been 2016's "second place master", making The Kid very hungry for his first major win of the year this weekend. He has gone back and forth with Armada and Hungrybox this year, but the two got the best of him last weekend at Smash Summit 2, leaving Mango at a disappointing 4th place. For Mango to overcome Armada and Hungrybox, he will have to have his iconic aggressive style at its best while staying disciplined -- a style that worked well in his set against Hungrybox at Smash Summit 2. Additionally, many fans will be looking forward to his possible rematch with Leffen -- a matchup that has not occurred since WTFox in July 2015. Although Mango has always picked Falco for Leffen, Mango's new-found comfort in the Fox ditto could make for an exciting rematch.

2016 has been an interesting year for Mew2King. After struggling at Genesis 3, PAX Arena, and Battle of the Five Gods, he put out a great performance at Smash Summit 2 last weekend; sweeping Armada 3-0 in an incredible upset. However, his mindset crumbled soon after losing to Hungrybox in Winner's Finals, leaving him at 3rd place. An important part of Mew2King's performance at Summit was the fact that he only had to play Melee -- something he will not be able to do this weekend as he will juggle between Melee and Smash 4. Although he is generally considered the weakest out of the top 5, an on-point Mew2King has been able to take anybody down. If he can come in with a stress-free and winning mindset, Mew2King could make it far at EGLX.

The Up-and-Comers

Aside from the top 5, many competitors on the cusp of greatness will be looking to break into the upper echelon this weekend.

Falco connoisseur Westballz has had a shaky year so far. His peaks have been very high, taking wins over the likes of Leffen, Mango, PPMD, and more. However, his inconsistency against more floaty characters such as Sheik and Ice Climbers have led to multiple disappointing performances such as 17th at Genesis 3, 33rd at Pound 2016, and 9th place last weekend at Smash Summit 2. Westballz has been spending lots of time on his very technical Fox, which has generally seen less success than his Falco. If Westballz can adjust his pace between floaty and fast-faller matchups, he may be able to bounce back at EGLX.

Fan favourite Axe has been in a bit of slump this year since PAX Arena partially due to feeling burnt out, although he had a convincing 7th place finish at Smash Summit 2 last weekend. He will have many challenges set out for him at EGLX, with Westballz, MacD, and the top 5 all having given Axe trouble in the past along with the top 5. A determined yet relaxed mindset and a favorable bracket is what Axe needs to make a deep run this weekend.
Coming in from SoCal is MacD, who is looking to bounce back from his very uncharacteristic 33rd place performance at Pound 2016. He had a fantastic run at Battle of the Five Gods, where he enlisted the help of KirbyKaze to greatly improve his play. If MacD can keep his composure this weekend, a clean bracket run could be in store for him.

Michigan's top 3 will be making the drive up North for EGLX: Duck, KJH, and Prince Abu. Duck will be looking to further solidify himself as the world's second best Samus this weekend. With generally consistent results this year coupled with wins over Westballz, Silent Wolf, HugS, and more, EGLX will be a strong tournament for Duck. Known for his very technical Fox, KJH is determined to take names at EGLX. With his tech skill well up to speed to today's meta, it will be up to him to organize and slow down his play to make it far at EGLX. Finally, Prince Abu will be looking to show that he is more than just a warm-up for Hungrybox. His 4 days of practice at Smash Summit 2 last weekend could very well give Prince Abu the push he needs to make a big breakout performance this weekend.

DJ Nintendo and The Moon AKA Team Grab and Go will be looking to make a splash this weekend. The Moon has shown great potential at the regional level with his slick Marth with many wins over Hax$. However, he has failed to perform at his best at the national level, placing 65th at Genesis 3 and 49th at Pound 2016. Meanwhile, DJ Nintendo broke his 25th place curse at Pound 2016, managing to make a long loser's run after a very early upset from Infinite Numbers. Could EGLX continue DJ Nintendo's Pound success?

We The North

Canada will be defending their home and native land at EGLX, with many of their best from the 6ix and beyond bringing their all. KirbyKaze will be coming out of retirement with his creative Sheik to show what Canada is made of. When KirbyKaze was practicing more frequently at the beginning of 2015, he won SWEET Prologue and placed 7th at Apex 2015. If KirbyKaze can get the rust off in time, a strong return may be likely.

Meanwhile, n0ne has been on the rise ever since moving to Toronto. His flashy yet calculated Falcon/Ganondorf play has netted him impressive wins over PewPewU, Eddy Mexico, KJH, and more this year. With KirbyKaze still rusting off, could n0ne be Canada's hero at EGLX?

Ryan Ford
made his return to Melee last year, and he has quickly been catching up with the times since then. Although he underperformed at tournaments such as Genesis 3 and Pound 2016, Ryan Ford's consistent results in Canada have shown that he can still play with the best.

Weon-X
will be returning to the game at EGLX after being less active in 2015. He was a top 50 level player in his prime, meaning that he cannot be slept on at EGLX. Additionally be sure to look out for other top Canadians such as Fork, Trulliam, sauc3, Coffeeblack, and Nightmare.

Teams Preview

Armada :peachmelee::foxmelee: and Mew2King :sheikmelee:: These two gods are the favorites to win EGLX doubles. Their solid synergy and strong understanding of teams brought them to 1st place at Genesis 3 and Smash Summit 2, where they remained undefeated in sets this year. Additionally, Armada's ability to switch between Peach and Fox will allow Team Armada2K to cover any character combinations. With this in mind, there is a good chance that EGLX will only continue Armada and Mew2King's winning streak.

Leffen :foxmelee: and Hungrybox :jigglypuffmelee:: Aside from being two of the best singles players in the world, Leffen and Hungrybox are also some of the best teams players around. The only time they paired up before was at CEO 2015, where they placed 2nd only losing to Armada and Shroomed. With Hungrybox's ability to switch roles between the support and the aggressor combined with Leffen's amazing punishes and speed, strong synergy is what the two will need to have a chance at taking down Armada2K this weekend.

Westballz :falcomelee: and MacD :peachmelee:: Team SoCal will be using their less common Falco/Peach team in hopes of making top 3 at EGLX. They have teamed a few times before, most notably taking 4th at CEO 2015 and 5th at Pound 2016. MacD's fantastic teams experience compliments Westballz's fiery play very well, giving these two the potential to perform well this weekend.

Axe :pikachumelee: and Prince Abu :jigglypuffmelee:: Axe and Prince Abu will be bringing their Pokémon together in hopes of making it far at EGLX. Axe has experience in the Pikachu/Jigglypuff team from teaming with Hungrybox before, and the two actually won Rubicon 7 doubles with Axe in late February this year. With the knowledge and experience under their belts to play such an unconventional team, Axe and Prince Abu could possibly surprise many at EGLX.

Mango :foxmelee: and Duck :samusmelee:: Although Mango and Duck do not have any prior experience from teaming together, Duck has experience in the Fox/Samus team from teaming with KJH. With Mango's raw agression combined with Duck monstrous punishes, the two of them could do well this weekend.

DJ Nintendo :foxmelee: and The Moon :marthmelee: (Team Grab N' Go): DJ Nintendo and The Moon love doubles, teaming together at every tournament they attend together. Although they have placed consistently for years now, they are still looking to make a big upset happen in teams. Could EGLX be Grab N' Go's big tournament?
