FORTE 2

A Texas Melee Tournament
December 20-21, 2014
Austin, TX

I am proud to announce that Forte 2 is part of the APEX World Circuit! This means that the top 24 placers at this tournament will earn seeding points for APEX 2015, one of the biggest tournament series for Melee out there.

Thanks to sponsorship from APEX and Twitch, this tournament is going to feature a $1,000 pot bonus. In addition, the winner of Forte 2 will receive complimentary flight & hotel for APEX 2015.

Tournament Organizers: MT, Tirno, Pho

Venue:
Welch Hall (WEL 3.502)
105 E 24th St
Austin, TX 78705

WEL 3.502 is one of UT's largest lecture halls with a capacity of 250+ people, featuring a medial console with a dual projector.

Parking:
You can park at the Brazos Garage which is about a 5 minute walk away from the venue. An all-day parking rate is $18 (which can be split between a carpool); keep in mind that this tournament has NO VENUE FEE. If you do not want to pay for parking, you can go west of Guadalupe St. to find free street parking. Depending on where you park, the walk will be 10-20 minutes. Due to many UT students being out of town for Christmas break, the chances of finding closer parking (on the 10 minute side) will be much higher than normal. Setups can be dropped off at the venue and will be taken in by a TO so you will not have to carry TVs for long walks.

On Sunday (NOT Saturday), parking along Dean Keaton (borders the north side of campus) is free and would only be about a 10 minute walk to the venue from there.

IF YOU CAN BRING A SETUP, FILL OUT THIS FORM: http://goo.gl/forms/n10vNtJ7pr

A work order has been put in to the university to lock the the room where the event is going to be hosted at precisely 11:45pm on the night of the 21st. This means that all the equipment will be secure through the night, and the room will be unlocked the following day at 9:00am.

Tournament Format:
Both Melee and PM doubles will be run through a double elimination bracket with all finals, semi-finals, and losers quarters being best 3 of 5 sets. All other sets are best 2 of 3.

The Melee singles tournament will be run through 32 round robin pools of top 2 advancing into a 64 man double elimination bracket. All pools matches will be best 2 of 3. In bracket, winners round 3 and onward along with losers round 4 and onward will be best 3 of 5, with all other sets being best 2 of 3.

The PM singles tournament will be run through 24 round robin pools of top 2 advancing into a 48 man double elimination bracket. All pools matches will be best 2 of 3. In bracket, winners round 3 and onward along with all losers round 4 and onward will be best 3 of 5, with all other sets being best 2 of 3.

Placings in Singles Pools are determined based on:
1. number of sets won
2. winning percentage in games (win/loss ratio)
3. head-to-head winner

In the event of an X-way tie in Singles Pools after all tiebreakers are exhausted, a best-of-1 round robin will be played out between the X players until there is a clear order of placings.

2. 8 Minute Time Limit

4. Buffer set to OFF
5. Dave’s Stupid Rule: No player can counter pick a stage he or she won on unless agreed upon by both players.
6. In the event of a match going to time/sudden death, the winner will be determined by:
a. Whoever has more remaining stock left.
b. If stocks of both players are the same, the winner will then be determined by whoever has less percent.
c. If the match ends with both players dying at the same time or if time ran out with both players at equal percent, an identical rematch of the previous match will be played out. Same characters and same stage.
d. In the event of going to sudden death because of suicide kill move (such as Ganon's overB or Dedede's inhale), the player initiating the move will be declared the winner.

Doubles
1. Team Attack set to “On”
2. Life stealing is allowed. (Note that lifestealing in Project: M is done by pressing A+B, rather than Melee's start)

a. Whichever team has more remaining stock.
b. If both teams have an equal amount of combined stocks, then whichever team has a lower combined percent is declared the winner.

4. Winning player of the preceding match bans three stages.
5. The losing player of preceding match picks stage for the next match.
6. The winning player of preceding match picks character.
7. The losing player picks character.
8. The next match is played.
9. Repeat 4-8 for all consecutive matches as necessary until the set is complete.
*Dave’s Stupid Rule is in effect

CounterPicks:
Lylat, Yoshis Island, Wario Ware, Final D, Norfair, Fountain of Dreams, and Skyworld. (Middle Row)

Banned: Whole Top Row, Yoshis story (Doubles Only)

1. The Tournament Organizer is the arbiter of all disputes.
2. BYOC (Bring your own controller): Players are expected to bring their own controller and be prepared for every tournament set.
3. DQ Rule: Arriving too late for a match will result in a DQ. Player(s) will have 5 minutes to show up before a loss of the first match. 5 more minutes results in a loss of the set. For doubles, both players on a team need to be present in order to play.
4. MikeHaze rule: No intentionally disrupting players, whether physically or vocally. This applies to EVERYONE, players and spectators. Simply talking to the players (and Hype moments) are exempt.
5. Gentleman's Clause: Any change to the rules is permitted if agreed upon by both players, except for the 8 minute time limit.
6. Textures are Cool Clause: We're usually pretty lenient with textures/custom music. You're welcome to bring your set up to the tournament with them, but please do not have any disruptive music, hard to see textures, or dramatically altered character models. If you have a problem with the set up you're playing on, notify the TO and we'll get it resolved ASAP.
7. Giga Bowser is Banned.
[/collapse]

Additional Rules:
  1. BYOC (Bring your own controller): Players are expected to bring their own controller and be prepared for every tournament set.
  2. Controller mods of ANY kind (short-hop mod, L-trigger mod, etc), except for cosmetic changes (paint job, different colored plastic), are banned. If you are caught using a banned controller you will be disqualified from the tournament with no refund.
  3. Turbo or programmed buttons of any kind are banned. You may use third party controllers or pads that have these features, but if you are suspected of using the banned features you will not be allowed to use that controller any longer. Failure to comply can also result in disqualification.
  4. You are responsible for your own controller and name tag and equipment. Any malfunctions or errors that occur are your responsibility, so bring an extra controller if possible, keep an eye on your equipment and always check to make sure you’re using the correct settings BEFORE a match is played. Both parties need to agree if a match is to be restarted because of these problems.
  5. Intentional forfeiting, match fixing, splitting, and any other forms of bracket manipulation are not allowed and punishable by the TO.
  6. No substitutions are allowed for singles or doubles.
  7. Coaching is allowed only between games, not during. Failure to adhere to this will lead to punishment at the TO’s discretion, which could include the removal from the venue.
  8. DQ Rule: Arriving too late for a match will result in a DQ. Player(s) will have 5 minutes to show up before a loss of the first match. 5 more minutes results in a loss of the set. For doubles, both players on a team need to be present in order to play.
  9. The tournament organizer has the right to save/record any tournament match if possible and has the right to upload said match.
  10. Disrupting your opponent physically or intending to disrupt their play (through something such as screaming in a player’s ear) will result in a warning. Repeated action will result in disqualification from the tournament and possibly ejection from the venue. Observers who physically disrupt players are to be dealt with as the Tournament Organiser sees fit. Disqualification is recommended if possible, and ejection from the venue is also a punishment.
  11. Although a rarity in melee (regarding textures and other game hacks):
  • Players may request that any texture, stage, or other hacks be disabled during a tournament set. If this is unable to be done, they may switch to a different setup if available.
  • Players are not allowed to use any game altering hacks, such as model hacks. If someone is caught setting up a system they brought with such hacks enabled can face punishment at the TO’s discretion.
Stream:
This tournament will be streamed by Tourney Locator at http://www.twitch.tv/tourneylocator

As PM is not a main event, none of the PM matches will be on the main stream provided by Tourney Locator. However, members of the community are welcome to set up their own stream.

PM rules will be put up as soon as we have them ready! I am not a PM player myself so I am bringing on those more current with the PM scene to help determine rulesets and etc. Stay tuned!

basically, TLoc won't be streaming P:M, but if somebody (like G-Rabbit or sethlon for example) wanted to stream P:M they're more than welcome to bring their own equipment.

can we get a moderator to sticky this thread on the front page?

there is no reason for an Apex World Circuit event to be on the second page.

WE NEED SETUPS & POWER STRIPS!

http://goo.gl/forms/n10vNtJ7pr

If you can bring a setup, please fill out this form so we know what to expect and what we may need to buy for the tournament! Last year we had an abundance of setups- and LOTS of friendlies as a result. Let's make that same thing happen this year.

For clarification, controllers with the springs removed from triggers are or aren't banned?

Melee doubles is a side event but still gets streamed?

Again, is a removed trigger spring considered a banned mod? We need to know so that we know what to practice with.

In related news, a ruleset for PM would be nice, especially in regard to the above questions.

Hey @ MT_ MT_ since Project M payouts are to the top 6, why not make semis best of 5?

Edit: nvm. The rules listed in the spoiler conflict with the rules list just above the spoiler.

Wait really? Why? I always knew turbo was banned, never heard of the springs being an issue.
Removing springs is a form of controller mod- it makes things like powershielding easier. This question was asked last year and I believe we took the same stance.

This has been fixed. Thanks for pointing that out!

I would absolutely love to come to this, but I don't drive and I live in Denton. If anyone would be willing to carpool or take me there/take me back or something, PM me and talk about it or something, it would be much appreciated.
