NEW COUNTERPICK RULES (applies to all games)
1. Winner picks character
2. Loser picks character
3. Winner bans stages*
4. Loser picks stage
*Game-specific bans:
Smash 4 and PM: Ban 2 stages; step 4 includes Dave’s Stupid Rule (loser may not pick a stage they won).
Melee: Winner bans one stage and may ban up to one additional stage on which he or she has lost during this set.
Other than the new counterpick rule, Melee and PM standard rulesets will apply. We will update this with a stage list and specifics if necessary.
Counterpick change explanation (also up for discussion)
Character matchups should determine the stage selection and bans. It makes more sense to ban a stage when characters are known. Otherwise there are scenarios where an opponent can select a seemingly balanced stage but then switch to a character with a large advantage on that stage. In a case where the characters are already known, it is likely that such an advantageous stage would be banned. With Smash 4 having far more matchups, there are more opportunities for such significant counterpicks.
Locking characters before selecting the stage prevents the winner from turning the counterpick matchup against the loser. Taking Melee/PM as an example, a Fox may counterpick a Samus to Final Destination only to find that the Samus player also has any pocket character with chain grabs. Despite this rewarding the winner for having more diversity in characters, the loser should not be placed at a disadvantage for choosing a stage based on the matchup that wasn't going to happen.
This change weakens the surprise factor for counterpicks, and it slightly weakens the counterpick overall strength. This helps guarantee that the better player wins rather than the player that won the first game and trades powerful counterpicks.
