All-Star Versus Character Bug

Whenever I try to play All-Star versus mode either by myself or with friends, the game just loads our characters with their original costumes instead of the ones we chose.
Also, nobody changes character after losing a stock.

You need to choose your color before selecting the character.

Okay, but what about the mode not actually working?

Are you using a wii or dolphin? It works perfectly fine for me on a wii.

I'm using a Wii with the homebrew full set.
We played 5 or 6 matches in all-star versus and it only worked ONCE...
