FIRST APPEARANCE: BANJO-KAZOOIE, 1998

Gruntilda, often refered to as Grunty, is the rhyming, gross, wart-covered witch and main antagonist of the Banjo-Kazooie series. She has appeared in every BK game to date, although, despite the title of the game, she herself didn't appear in Banjo-Kazooie: Grunty's Revenge. Her sisters appear once in Banjo-Tooie, while her other sister appears in Banjo-Kazooie as the good witch who aids Banjo & Kazooie on their quest.

OVERVIEW

IN BANJO-KAZOOIE
In the first game, Gruntilda played the role of the stereotypical "evil witch". She spoke only in rhymes and was known for being extremely vain, which is odd considering how ugly she appears. She has a bad habit of picking her nose, as seen in the Banjo-Kazooie intro cutscene. Like most witches, she uses a broomstick for transportation. When Dingpot revealed that Tooty, Banjo's sister, was the "prettiest and fairest in the land", Gruntilda became infuriated and kidnapped Tooty. She selfishly plotted to use a "Beauty Transfer Machine" to drain Tooty's youth and beauty and transfer it to her own ugly self, which would result in Grunty becoming pretty and thin and Tooty becoming ugly, fat and green. Banjo and his good friend Kazooie chased the witch through her massive lair, where she had created several worlds filled with her minions and various challenges to stop the duo. As the pair progressed, Gruntilda shouted rhyming taunts and various insults in an attempt to keep the pair away. But with the help from various sources, including her nicer sister Brentilda who told Banjo and Kazooie interesting secrets regarding Gruntilda, the bear and bird duo were able to complete the worlds and reach Grunty's last challenge before rescuing Tooty: a twisted game show called Grunty's Furnace Fun. After the duo won the game show, Gruntilda ran away and Banjo and Kazooie rescued Tooty. Later, the bear and bird journeyed to the roof of Gruntilda's Lair and faced off in a battle with Grunty. In the end, Grunty was knocked off her tower, plummeting to her doom.

GRUNTY FALLS FROM HER TOWER

IN BANJO-KAZOOIE: GRUNTY'S REVENGE
Two months have passed since Grunty was knocked off her tower in Banjo-Kazooie and she has been perfecting her plan for revenge ever since. Klungo, Grunty's loyal servant, builds her a mechanical body, aptly called Mecha-Grunty, for her ghost to inhabit. Rather than fighting the duo as the main antagonist in a body of her own, she operates Mecha-Grunty and causes chaos by going twenty years back in time and kidnapping Kazooie. However, after Banjo's first battle with the robotic witch, Kazooie was freed and Mecha-Grunty fleed. Their next battle involved fighting her up above the lighthouse and taking out her mechanical parts one at a time. After her second defeat, Grunty had enough and wanted Klungo to upgrade her up to supreme strength and battle the duo in her lair when it was under construction. Facing them at the top of her lair, Mecha-Grunty charged at them, fired electric balls, ground pounded, and dropped airborne mines. Even with her body destroyed, she was not ready to give as she used her ghostly power to defeat the duo, which failed. She is beaten once more and returns to her body in the present, setting the events of Banjo-Tooie in motion.

HER MECHA-GRUNTY FORM

IN BANJO-TOOIE
After two years have passed, Gruntilda was suddenly freed from her prison by the sudden appearance of her sisters Mingella and Blobbelda. Their evil spells levitate and destroy the rock that trapped Grunty and they discover that she had been degenerated into a skeleton. Furious at her new bony body, Gruntilda asked her sisters for help in restoring her. "Mingy" and "Blobby" had already planned for such an event, and the three prepared to leave Spiral Mountain. Before they did, when Mumbo had wandered out of Banjo's house to find the source of the ruckus caused when Mingella and Bloddelda entered with the HAG 1 digging machine, Grunty chased him and tried to kill him with magic spells. Seeing him enter Banjo's house, she prepares a bigger spell to destroy it and while Banjo, Kazooie and Mumbo escaped, Bottles stayed behind assuming Mumbo was lying and trying to win at their poker game, resulting in him being killed by the blast, which also ruined Banjo's house. After destroying Banjo's house, the trio of witches used the HAG 1 to reach Cauldron Keep on Isle O' Hags, where Mingella and Blobbelda revealed their B.O.B. machine. It was designed to suck the life out of anything captured in its beam; Gruntilda practiced this on King Jingaling for giving Banjo and Kazooie a Jiggy, reducing him to a zombie. It is also interesting to note that Gruntilda stopped speaking in rhyme at this point (her sisters found it "annoying"). Gruntilda then wanted to use B.O.B. on the whole island, but is informed that it will take time for it to charge up before that can happen. For the rest of the game, she stays in Cauldron Keep but will usually talk to Banjo and Kazooie whenever they enter a mini-game. They eventually meet her again in Cauldron Keep where she makes an attempt to destroy Banjo and Kazooie with another game show called Tower of Tragedy, this time competing against her two sisters in which the loser would have a 1-ton weight dropped on them. Her plan failed and she ended up killing her two sisters, but because of her temper, declares Banjo and Kazooie's win "invalid due to the faulty scoring equipment". Not sure of what to do next, Gruntilda takes Kazooie's advice to "escape in a cowardly fashion like in Banjo-Kazooie", and she tells the duo she'll be at the top of the tower, though she of course boasts she will win this time. Sure enough, Banjo and Kazooie found Gruntilda in the HAG 1 waiting for them at the top of Cauldron Keep. Although she had more success the last time she attacked Banjo and Kazooie (she killed two of his allies, but were brought back by reversing the B.O.B.), Gruntilda's revenge plans failed and was defeated yet again, reduced to nothing more than a talking skull. Later, Banjo, Kazooie, Humba Wumba and Jamjars use her head as a ball in a game of "Kick Around" and she loses one of her eyes (again) in the process. She swore that she would get her revenge in Banjo-Threeie.

GRUNTY IN HER SKELETAL FORM

IN BANJO-KAZOOIE: NUTS N' BOLTS
Grunty reprises her role as an antagonist in this game as well, and has taken up her annoying rhyming once more. She makes her way back to Spiral Mountain, even though she is still a skull (probably why it took her eight years to get there). A now fattened Banjo and Kazooie challenge her to another showdown, but the Lord Of Games pauses the battle and states they shall fight in true Banjo-Kazooie style, by collecting random useless objects. A fat Banjo and bodiless Grunty start to collect the thousands of badges L.O.G. put in front of them, but soon grows impatient of a skull and a fat bear with a fat bird in his backpack running around. He restores Banjo and Kazooie to fighting fit shape and gives them a Magical Wrench, while giving Grunty a robotic form of her original body with a jar for her head and a cat named Piddles. The three characters go to Showdown Town, where Gruntilda tries to stop Banjo and Kazooie from earning Jiggies and returning to Spiral Mountain and fight her once more. She appears in all the levels of the game. In Showdown Town, she treats the time off she has from attempting to beat the heroes as a vacation.

GRUNTY'S NUTS N' BOLTS FORM

WHY GRUNTILDA?

Gruntilda is the only recurring villain in the BK series. Most of the other bosses and enemies in the series haven't returned in other games, with the exception of Klungo, Grunty's servant. Not to mention she's a female AND villain, because we all know Smash needs more of both of these. Grunty is also very unique due to there not being many 'magical' characters. Although Grunty definitely won't join the fray unless Banjo gets in the roster of SSB4, the main antagonist of a series matters more than a minor protagonist like Mumbo or Bottles in many cases, increasing her chances.

And even then, Grunty's chances are slim, due to even Banjo not having a whole lot of likeliness to join the battle. In the end, it just depends on what exactly Sakurai believes to be a "Nintendo All-Star", which leaves Grunty in a bind.

ARGUMENTS
  1. Grunty is owned by Rare, therefore making her very unlikely.
  2. Grunty doesn't deserve to be in Smash! Banjo is good enough.
  3. Other characters such as Mumbo, Bottles, or Jamjars are more important.
  4. Grunty doesn't have enough moveset potential for Smash.
  5. Grunty isn't unique enough.
COUNTER ARGUMENTS
  1. Although I don't really have a counter argument for this one, I do think that Banjo getting in will increase Grunty's chances a considerable amount.
  2. As I said before, Grunty plays a large role in the series. The series deserves to have it's villain, plus Grunty is a female. So you're getting a female/villain characer.
  3. As I stated before, the main antagonist is always a better choice over the minor protagonist characters. You get a villain character, (Which Smash needs more of em') or you get a sidekick. Which one?
  4. Read the moveset section below. It should convince you.
  5. Oh, so you're saying that Smash already has an evil, gross witch? Go play Brawl and tell me about that witch you saw.
MOVESET

Gruntilda is a heavyweight character, a tad bit smaller than DK. She has below average speed, great strength, great knockback, average recovery, average air game, and good range. Also, this is Grunty in her normal form.

Neutral Attack: Slap
Grunty does a quick swipe at the air in front of her. Does 2% damage with no lag or knockback, but poor range. Can be comboed to do three slaps, the third doing 4% damage with very mild knockback and decent range.

Side Tilt: Unbalanced Kick
Grunty does a kick while waving her arms to keep balance. Does 4% damage with some lag at the end and with good range, but no knockback.

Down Tilt: Low Shock
Grunty points her fingertip at the ground in front of her and shoots a small amount of lightning at the ground. Does 6% damage with mild knockback, along with some mild lag at the end, an electric effect, and good range.

Up Tilt: Upper Flame
Grunty points her fingertips at the sky above her and shoots a small flame blast. Does 7% damage with good knockback, some lag at the end, a fire effect, and good range.

Dash Attack: Stumble
Grunty starts to stumble, then trips. Does 7% damage with good knockback, and some lag at the end, also with decent range.

Aerial Attack: Broom Loop
Grunty does a loop in the air on her broom. Does 10% damage with good knockback and range.

Grab: Levitate Hex
Grunty uses a hex to make the opponent levitate in the air.

Grab Attack: Choke
Grunty makes the opponent choke. Does 3% damage.

Side Throw: Throw
Grunty waves her arms and sends the opponent flying off the screen. Does 12% damage with great knockback.

Back Throw: Throw Blast
Grunty flings the opponent behind her, then to blast them off the screen with a freeze blast. Does 13% damage with fantastic knockback and a freeze effect, but a little lag at the beginning and end.

Up Throw: Upward Fire Blast
Grunty makes the opponent levitate above her for a short time before she blasts them off the screen with a blast of fire. Does 14% damage with fantastic knockback, along with a fire effect and a considerable amount of lag at the beginning.

Down Throw: Downward Lightning Bolt
Grunty slams the opponent down in front of her before shooting a lightning bolt down onto the opponent. Does 8% damage when the opponent is slammed onto the ground, does 15% damage when Grunty blasts them with fantastic knockback, a little lag at the beginning, and a lightning effect.

Chain Grab: Magical Fist
Grunty conjures a giant magical fist that grabs an opponent.

Neutral Special: Wicked Witch Blast
Grunty shoots a magical blast to her side a with random effect. May have a burn, freeze, or shock effect. Burn blast works just like Ness' PK Fire. Freeze blast does 12% damage with good knockback and good range. Shock blast does 9% damage with decent knockback and decent range. All of the blasts leave Grunty with a little lag at the end.

Side Special: Broom Swoop
Grunty hops on her broom that appears seemingly out of nowhere and swiftly swoops to the side a long distance, (Think about half of Final Destination) then to hop off her broom that then disappears. Does 11% damage with great knockback, but small range and lag at the beginning.

Up Special: Fire-Filled Recover
Grunty shoots fire out of the palms of her hands continuosly, letting her fly high into the air. Grunty can also be controlled easily in the air, making for good vertical and horizontal recovery. The fire from her hands does minor damage with no knockback whatsoever.

Down Special: Hypnosis
Grunty will wave her arms and chant a spell, leaving her vulnerable too. Makes all opponents near her fall asleep. (Works like Jigglypuff's U-Special)

Side Smash: Flaming Broom Bonk
Grunty takes her broom out and sets it on fire with her magic, then to swing it at the air in front her. Afterwards, she blows out the fire on the broom. Does 20% damage when fully charged with fantastic knockback and a fire effect, but short range and major lag at the beginning and end of the attack.

Up Smash: Magical Fire Blast
Grunty points her fingertips at the sky, sending fire going into the air above her. Does 21% damage when fully charged with great knockback and fantastic range with a fire effect, but with major lag at the beginning and end of the attack.

Down Smash: Electrical Shock
Grunty points her fingertips at the ground at her feet and shoots out electricity. Does 20% damage when fully charged with fantastic range and knockback with a fire effect, but major lag at the beginning.

Aerial Side Smash: Fire Blast
Grunty shoots fire out of the palms of her hands to her side. Does 13% damage with great knockback and a fire effect, but with some lag at the beginning and short range.

Aerial Up Smash: Freezing Fiend
Grunty shoots ice from her fingertips at the sky. Does 11% damage with a freeze effect and great knockback and fantastic range, but lag at the beginning and end.

Aerial Back Side Smash: Clumsy Kick
Grunty does a quick kick behind her clumsily, before flipping in the air. Does 11% damage with decent knockback and range, but with lag at the end.

Aerial Down Smash: Broom Bomber (Meteor Smash)
Grunty gets on her broom and flys swiftly towards the ground. Does 7% damage when toching opponents, but mild knockback and short range with some lag at the end.

FINAL SMASH
I actually had a few ideas for the FS, so here they are:

Final Smash 1: HAG 1
Grunty takes a radio out of nowhere and says something into it. Then, the HAG 1 appears and she jumps into it. You are now able to control the HAG 1.
A: The HAG 1 shoots lasers out of it's sides while spinning around.
B: Grunty pops out of the turret of the HAG 1 and shoots a magic blast. The blast will automatically be shot at the player with the lowest percentage, though it will sometimes go after the player with the highest percentage, but with better knockback than last time.

Final Smash 2: Frog Hex
Grunty casts a spell that turns all of the opponents into frogs, making them all extremely easy to KO, although the opponents can still hop around very slowly. The hex lasts for 15 seconds.

Final Smash 3: The Final Battle
Grunty hops on her broom that can now be controlled freeley in the air. It works similarly to Yoshi's FS, except that Grunty's is easier to control.
A: Grunty shoots a super magic blast. Does 25% damage with great knockback, and good range, but with a little lag at the beginning.
B: Grunty darts forward quickly, similarly to her S-Special. Does 17% damage with amazing knockback, but with some lag at the beginning and end.

OTHER THINGS

Up Taunt: Cackle
Grunty performs her infamous evil laugh. In case you haven't heard it...
Her laugh starts at 0: 06 and ends at 0: 10.

Side Taunt: Dingpot, Dingpot...
Grunty says her first sentence in the series:
"Dingpot, Dingpot by the bench, who is the nicest looking wench?"

Down Taunt: Jugglin' Balls (I couldn't resist!)
Grunty Juggles three balls of fire, then to let them fall as she kicks them off the screen.

Double Jump: Flyin' Witch
Grunty uses her broom to fly a bit upward.

Dash Animation: Strugglin' To Keep Up
Grunty breathes heavily while running as fast as possible.

Helpless Animation: Broom Dive
Grunty hangs on to the back of her broom while screaming as it plummets downwards.

Stage Entrance: Grunty's Grand Entrance
Gruntilda flys in on her broom in style while (once again) performing her infamous cackling.

Results Screen Animation: Clap
Grunty slowly claps while looking at the ground with eyes angry and head slightly tilted.

MUSIC
Potential peices that could appear in SSB4 as Gruntilda's music.

WITCH'S LAIR
LISTEN
The main theme of Gruntilda that plays throughout her monstrous lair.

FINAL BATTLE
LISTEN

The remixed version of her theme that plays when Banjo & Kazooie duel Grunty atop her tower.

BATTLE WITH HAG 1

The theme of the HAG 1, the witch's tank-like machine.

GRUNTY'S FINAL CHALLENGE

KLUNGO'S THEME
LISTEN

The theme of Grunty's servant, Klungo.

GRUNTY INDUSTRIES
LISTEN
The theme of the infamous Grunty Industries, Grunty's factory.

DISCLAIMER

I'm not expecting to see Gruntilda join SSB4. I feel like she has a 15% chance of making it in. Even Banjo has extremely slim chances of joining the fray, and Banjo HAS to be to be in the game if Grunty is gonna make it.

So, Grunty will probably not join the battle this time around, sadly.
SCREW YOU RARE

So, I thank all of you for taking the time to read this. I really enjoyed making it!

And of course, a support list.

"I can't be playable, in Pyrosphere or Skyloft,
because my company was bought out by Microsoft!

I know you classic Banjo fans miss my curves and sharp wit,
but if you think that Grunty's getting into Smash, then you're quite a twit!"

Sorry. She'd be cool as a second Banjo rep, in an alternate universe where Rare stuck with Nintendo, and we got Banjo-Threeie on the Gamecube like we were supposed to. Alas, this is real life, and Banjo is pretty much dead.

Well, I don't expect her to join the roster either, but it was just for fun.

I love this thread. Banjo & Kazooie, Gruntila, and Mumbo SHOULD ALREADY BE IN SMASH.

Damn you Rare. Damn you Nintendo. I want to be on the list of support list.

Made a big update today. Added SuperBrawler to the support list, made a half-done moveset, added a music section, and also added an "Arguments/Counter Arguments section.

If Banjo & Kazooie ever come back under Nintendo's control, they will be added to Smash in a heartbeat. And then I would be a full Gruntilda supporter, so feel free to add me to the supporter list.

It's very unlikely to ever happen sadly, especially in this game, but we can hope. Solid moveset by the way.

Smash Bros will never be complete without at least three Banjo reps (Banjo-Kazooie, Mumbo Jumbo and Gruntilda).
