Throughout Smash 4 Speculation, an interesting topic rose up known as "Alternate Costumes."
An Alternate Costume is like a character's palette/color swap, but it also changes the model rather than just the texture, usually to represent another character, or that same character in another "costume."

Alternate Costumes were somewhat introduced in Melee, where Peach had an orange color swap that seemed to be meant to appear similar to Princess Daisy. On top of just changing her color, it also changed the emblem on her chest to a flower-shaped on, like Daisy has. But since this didn't change the model, I'll be referring to this type of costume as a "Semi-Costume."

In Brawl, we received our first real Alternate Costume, in the form of Wario. Wario was able to switch between his default Biker outfit from the WarioWare series, and his classic yellow and purple Plumber outfit from his appearances in the Mario series. This was the first true Alternate Costume, as it have him two completely different models to choose from.

Ever since Brawl was released and people waited for Smash 4, Alternate Costumes have always had some talk. If Wario could have one, why couldn't others? Many people speculated on what alternate costumes could be given to veterans, and what alternate costumes potential newcomers could have.

On October 31st, 2013, the Smash Bros. Pic of the Day showed The Wii Fit trainer and a male version of the Wii Fit Trainer in the air looking at each other. Everyone realized that this was obviously an Alternate Costume. Note that this was on Halloween, so it's kinda funny that Sakurai would reveal a costume that day (Halloween, Costumes, get it?). Mention of this wasn't heard for a looooong time.

Months later in the Super Smash Bros. for WiiU/3DS Direct, on April 8th, 2014, the Male Wii Fit Trainer was officially revealed as an alternate costume for the Wii Fit Trainer, along with a WireFrame Mac costume for Little Mac.

On May 16th, 3 Alternate Costumes were revealed for the Villager, each of which resembled a possible customization of your character from the Animal Crossing. At E3 2014, and at the Best-Buy SmashFest demos, people playing as Villager realized that they weren't all alternate costumes with their own palette swaps, but rather there were no palette swaps! Instead, Villager had a different Villager for each color!

Since then, a few costumes have been revealed. On June 24th, a Semi-Alt was revealed for Link, that resembles his casual clothes from Skyward Sword. On July 1st, Little Mac had his World Circuit clothes from Punch-Out Wii was revealed as a Semi-Alt, AND his Pink Hoodie was revealed as a full Alt! That one was a fan-favorite.
Since Mac has 2 full Alternate Costumes, the door is open for other characters who have a lot of Alternate a Costume potential, like Link, with his many incarnations, and Samus, with her many different power-suits.

UPDATE: In the July 10th Pic of the Day, Sakurai gave us 2 more Semi-Alts.
Samus' Light Suit, and Mario's Star Spangled overalls from NES Open Tournament Golf.

UPDATE: In Sakurai's latest Famitsu article, on July 16th, after the Robin and Lucina reveal, Sakurai said:
Initially, I had considered including Lucina as one of Marth's alternate costumes. After all, she has a close relationship with him in FE:A. In such cases, even if two characters' names and voices differ, as long as they function the same way, I assign them as alternate costumes. The Wii Fit Trainers, Villagers, and Robin are examples of this setup.
This states that Lucina was originally going to be an Alternate Costume for Marth. But more importantly, it finally confirms that characters can have alternate costumes of different characters. This opens the door for many alternate costumes who were disagreed on for being different characters than the base, like Dark Pit, and Daisy.

LATEST UPDATE: In the September 3rd Pic of the Day, Sakurai confirmed that every character will have 8 Color Swaps. He included a picture of Samus, showing different color swaps based on her various suits, and also the previously revealed Light Suit Semi-Alt, and a new Dark Samus Semi-Alt.
Also, on September 5th, there was a Japanese Demo event for Smash 3DS, where you could play as any one on the assumed starting roster. This gave players a chance to see various alternate costumes. These include a full Alph costume for Olimar (full model change), a Feirce Diety Semi-Alt for Link (changing the face too), a Galacta Knight alt and Dark Meta Knight for Meta Knight (unknown if it is a semi-alt or not), a "Naked" Meta Knight alt for Kirby (Meta Knight without his mask), and a Wolf color for Fox.

His is an archive of all of the confirmed characters, and Alternate Costumes that fans think they should have.

MARIO

Fan-Favorites
[collapse=Dr. Mario]

Dr. Mario was a playable character in Melee, but was cut from Brawl due to him being too similar to Mario.
This is probably the most likely Alternate Costume, and the one with the post demand.
A Dr. Mario Alternate Costume was also featured in the popular Brawl hack, Project M.
[/collapse]

[collapse=Sunshine Mario]

This is a costume that Mario could buy in Super Mario Sunshine.
[/collapse]

[collapse=Various Power-Ups]

In the Mario series, Mario is known for collecting a vast array of Power-Ups. Each of these Power-Ups gives him a special ability, but also a new look. The Leaf either gives him a Raccoon Tail and Ears (which is confirmed for an item), or a full blown Tanooki Suit. The Frog Suit gives him........ a Frog Suit. The Boomerang gives him a Boomerang Suit, The Cloud Flower gives him the Cloud Suit, the list goes on and on.
Mario has one of the biggest array of alternate costumes out of all the Nintendo characters.
[/collapse]

[collapse=Mario Strikers Armor]

This is the armor that Mario wears in the soccer game, Mario Strikers Charged. The Mario Strikers designs were meant to be more gritty takes on the Mario characters, while still keeping the image we know them for. For example, Waluigi's craziness was turned into him being a downright psychopath doing crotch-chops.
This makes Mario act like the leader, as he always is in his games. He is very confident, and can take on any challenge.

If one Mario character had their Striker Armor, chances are that the rest would too.[/collapse]

LUIGI

Fan-Favorites (All written by @AEM)
[collapse=Mr. L]

Mr. L is a brainwashed Luigi that served under Count Bleck in the game Super Paper Mario. He was a secondary antagonist and eventually became the final boss of the game.
Mr. L is a common alternate costume request for Luigi, he is also a selectable alternate costume for Luigi in Project M.
[/collapse]

[collapse=Dr. Luigi]

Dr. Luigi is a doctor persona of Luigi in the same vain of Dr. Mario being a separate persona of Mario. Dr. Luigi first began his medical career on January 1st of 2014. Perhaps Dr. Luigi could throw L-Megavitamins instead of green fireballs when this costume is in use.[/collapse]

[collapse=Casino Luigi]

In Super Mario 64 DS, each playable character had a collection of minigames for the player to play. Luigi's minigames were all based on card games and he was seen wearing this outfit. While not nearly as requested or even mentioned as other potential choices, who wouldn't want to beat up foes while looking this classy?
[/collapse]

[collapse=Various Power-Ups]

Much like Mario, Luigi has a plethora of costumes he has worn while utilizing various power ups in the Mario franchise. As of right now the only confirmed one is Fire Luigi, but there many more that are available to him that would easily work as other alternate costume choices.[/collapse]

[collapse=Mario Strikers Armor]

This is the armor that Luigi wears in the soccer game, Mario Strikers Charged.

As I said above in the section for Mario's Striker Armor, the Strikers designs wear meant to be more gritty takes on the Mario characters. This makes Luigi seem a bit shy and nervous, but actually have a great strength within.

If one character had their Strikers armor, the rest probably would too.
[/collapse]

PEACH

[collapse=Princess Daisy]

Princess Daisy is a character that appeared in Super Mario Land for the GameBoy, and was damsel in distress in that game.
Since then, she has become known for her roles in the spin-off games, much like Waluigi, and tends to stay in them, also like Waluigi.

In Melee, Peach has a semi-alt for Daisy, that changed her hairy color and dress color, along with her necklace, to make it resemble Daisy's flower-shaped one.

Since it has been confirmed that characters can have alternate costumes that are different characters in Smash 4, it is likely that Daisy will be upgraded to a full alternate costume.
[/collapse]

[collapse=Nurse Toadstool]

As the name implies, Nurse Toadstool is the Dr. Mario counterpart of Princess Peach. She is assumed to be Dr. Mario's loyal assistant, but she barely ever appears in game.
She would most likely be an alt just to go Dr. Mario and possibly Dr. Luigi.
[/collapse]

[collapse=Mario Strikers Armor]

This is the armor Peach wears in Mario Strikers Charged.

As said above, the Striker designs are supposed to be grittier versions of the character we all know. This makes Peach kind of suggestive, strutting onto the stage in a suggestive-manner saying "Come on! Mmmhmmmm!" while cameras snap pictures of her.
[/collapse]

BOWSER

[collapse=Dry Bowser]

Originating in New Super Mario Bros for the DS, Dry Bowser is the resurrected skeleton on Bowser, much like how Dry Bones are the skeletons of Koopa Troopas.

Somehow, in various spin-offs, he has been established as his own character, being able to stand alongside Bowser.

It is also worth mentioning that he is an alternate costume for Bowser in the famous Brawl mod, Project M.
[/collapse]

[collapse=Dark Bowser (Bowser's Inside Story spoilers)
[IMG]http://www.mariowiki.com/images/e/e2/DarkBowserAni.gif[/IMG]

(Mario & Luigi Bowser's Inside Story spoilers ahead!)

Dark Bowser is the result of the Dark Star copying Bowser's DNA, and turning itself into an almost perfect replica of him. He is the final boss (along with the Dark Star Core/Fawful) of Bowser's Inside Story, and is a fan-favorite of the Mario & Luigi series.

This is one of the more unlikely ones, as Sakurai has yet to given the Mario RPG games any representation in Smash.[/collapse]

[collapse=Mario Strikers Armor]

As I said with the others, the Strikers designs are supposed to be grittier than the ones we all know, while still staying true to the character.

If Bowser gets his armor, it's likely that everyone else will.[/collapse]

MORE COMING SOON!!!

NOTE: This thread was onced owned by @ Guybrush20X6 Guybrush20X6 , and was called "Big list of Potential Alt Costumes.
When I took ownership from him, he requested I keep his original OP in a spoiler tag.

[collapse=Original OP by Guybrush20X6]
If we assume that all the characters from the previous games return (unlikely I know but work with me here) what characters would have what what costumes/forms? Post what you think they should have and I'll add them to the list.

Remember this is a list of POTENTIAL alt costumes so my own preferences don't come into this and I am running on the assumption that at least some alt costumes will be other characters like Daisy was to Peach in Melee and Brawl. Spoilered due to sheer number of pictures

I find the lack of Fusion Suit Samus, Dark Pit (and FE1 box art Marth :troll:) disturbing.

Yoshi and Kirby could go for their Yarn alternatives.

Though I'm being very picky I feel like skins shouldn't give you completely different characters because it feels like a cop-out for expanding the roster to ridiculous proportions. Alternate costumes should be what it means: different outfits for the same character, not having two/three characters essentially share the same slot. (Ex: Peach->Rosalina, Sonic->Silver, Samus->Dark Samus, these are all completely different characters) Unless you were implying that Peach would have Rosalina's dress, Sonic would have a silver color scheme, Samus would wear the Dark Samus suit, etc. then please disregard this.

We really shouldn't go overboard when it comes to alternate characters.

I feel that they only work if they're the same character but with different designs (such as King K. Rool, who could use his Kaptain K. Rool and Baron K. Roolenstein costume).

Agreed, at most id expect alternate costumes for the characters we have and not alt skins of other characters slapped over them.

I agree that alt costumes shouldn't be a cop-out (I was one of the people raging over Zero's X costume) but it's ultimately the dev's choice and for some like Princess Daisy it could work better. (Could you imagine the rage if she got in as a separate character?)

Or
Yeah... honestly, I think an alternate character as a costume is better than the character not getting in at all. Something like Ganondorf/Demise makes perfect sense. Also, I think the Fire Emblem characters should have a lot of such costume/characters. I would kind of expect to see Roy come back as an alternate of Ike, and it seems like there are lots of Marth-like characters that don't really bear a different character slot but would do nicely with a shared moveset.

Pretty exhaustive list you got, though. ROB should get Star Fox's ROB 64. :)

I added a bunch more. I like that idea of ROB's alt costumes referencing other peripherals but what ones would work?

As far as veterans go I would want these.

Mario with a Dr.Mario alt would make the most sense.
Fusion Suit for Samus.
Fierce Deity for Link.
Mr.L for Luigi.
Skyward Sword and Impa for Zelda/Sheik.
James McCloud for Fox.
Old school for Captain Falcon.
Mario Strikers suits for Peach and Yoshi.(Maybe Mario and Luigi too)
Dry Bowser for Bowser
Old school for Zero Suit Samus
Gen 2/3/4/5/6 trainers for the Pokemon trainer(not sure what to do with their pokemon though)
Funky Kong for DK.
Wind Waker/Orcarina of Time for Ganondorf

With newcomers I'd want these

Jump suit for Lil' Mac
Pirate or Boxer for King K. Rool
Tiny Kong for Dixie Kong
Protoman for Megaman(the other Megamen can work too)
Meta Ridley for Ridley
Roy for Marth lolololololololol

I support the idea of alternate costume, but some of the examples make me want to hit you.
MewTwo as a costume change for Lucario??

Anyway, I think they should stay the same character. Just different models. i.e. Skyward Zelda/Twilight Zelda, Mario/Dr Mario etc..
Only exceptions like Ganondorf/Demise or debatably Olimar/New pikimin rep should be considered when they have very good reasoning.

Also these alternate costumes should not be changing the hit-boxes as that gives a competitive (dis)advantage so I feel like Wigglytuff and Igglybuff will not work as they have different body shapes than Jigglypuff. Perhaps you could use the Jigglypuff from the anime where she holds the Mic, each time she lands an attack the opponent could have some silly marks on their face.

Wouldn't holding the mic change the hitbox anyways? Now that I think about it, Pikachu, Jigglypuff, Charizard and the other pokemon would just wear a bunch of different hats anyways.

Well I'm sure wearing the sunhat and bandana for example (Jigglypuff's current alternate costumes in Brawl) doesn't alter the hitboxes so I'm not sure why that cannot be applied to the mic as well. But if there's no feasible way for that to happen we can always take the TF2 approach and just give everyone a bunch of hats.

For ROB, how about the Ancient Minister? Might be difficult to implement considering his animations, but it's probably the closest thing ROB has to a "canon" alternate costume.
As for the Pokemon, they can be difficult. How about giving them all Mystery Dungeon accessories (pink scarves, team badges, etc)?

I like you already.

This is the best idea for a R.O.B. alternate costume I've seen!

Anyone got any ideas for the Ice Climbers? All I've got is them cosplaying as Yeto and Yeta from Twilight Princess.

I would definitely change it so that characters aren't suddenly other characters. Like Lucario having Zoroark and Mewtwo skins or Snake having a Raiden skin. Those don't make much sense.

Ganondorf and Demise makes sense, as would Mario and Dr. Mario or Luigi and Mr. L.

Wario - Dr. Wario

I guess however people would prefer Wario in a doctor's outfit to be a separate character.

I hate the idea of people putting Yarn Kirby as alt costume of Kirby because they had totally different moves and abilities.

It's not like Yarn Kirby will get in. Plus, Yarn Kirby is Kirby so it doesn't matter if they have different moves. They're still the same character.

For everyone going on about the whole alt costumes should not be other characters A. I agree B. this is a list of POTENTIAL costumes and in the end it's up to Sakurai and Nintendo to decide so we don't know if they'll have characters as costumes. I'm just making an exhaustive list.

So what do you think about Mewtwo and Lucario being listed as alts for each other?
Well I never have played Pokemon but I have not seen that before until your post. I would likely disagree with that if I was a pokemon fan.

Now Prince Fluff/Yarn Kirby makes a great alt combination :).

I'm not suggesting Yarn Kirby but a Yarn-like Kirby to pay homage to Kirby's Epic Yarn. This suggestion is the equivalent of giving Link (Let's assume it is Skyward Sword Link) an Ocarina of Time costume or a Twilight Princess costume. We are not using Ocarina of TIme Link or Twilight Princess Link as they are clearly different characters, but simply we are using different costumes to pay homage to their respective series.

Like I said before, I am against using characters as alternative costumes.

using certain characters as alts just makes sense in certain situations. Having Louie as an alt for Olimar for example would make sense as Olimar doesnt have a different outfit throughout his series and it's not like the others are really any different skill set wise. i say if the character definately has possibilities for alt costumes that are just different outfits on the same character, then def use them. but when dealing with a character who really does have next to nothing and there's another character in their series who is merely an expy of them then i say why not.

Koopa works really well as a Yoshi ALT.
And Paper Mario can be a good Mr. G&W ALT too.

I agree that alt costumes shouldn't be a cop-out (I was one of the people raging over Zero's X costume) but it's ultimately the dev's choice and for some like Princess Daisy it could work better. (Could you imagine the rage if she got in as a separate character?)
I see what you're saying, but if you look closely at Peach's Daisy 'costume' you'll see that she only has her color palette, like how Mario always had the Wario colors and Luigi's got the Waluigi scheme. I think alternate skins is something Sakurai has been consciously avoiding since Smash 64, and instead only referencing other characters by simply giving a fighter similar colors.

I think alternate costumes are fine, but alternate characters are a different story. Plus alt characters kinda cut down on Assist Trophy candidates.

If you look at the Melee model you'll see the Daisy palette actually has shorter gloves and flower designs around her jewels. But I digress, we're not here to debate about whether character = costumes. This is just a list we're making.

Isn't that what some people were going for? Aren't you implying this by having Funky, Dixie, Mewtwo/Zoroark, Igglybuff/Wigglytuff for DK, Diddy, Lucario and Jigglypuff and many others?

You're going into alt costumes and alt character territory.
