First, let me say that I think the chances of a Squaresoft/Square Enix character getting in are slim. This isn't a thread to argue about that. However, I am curious which characters people would like to see that originated in a game on a Nintendo system (i.e., all Final Fantasy games before FF7).
Mostly, I don't want this thread to become dedicated to Cloud, Sephiroth, or Sora. While I think they've made Gameboy appearances via Kingdom Hearts, they just aren't characters made on a Nintendo system and don't represent the company.

I see the main candidates being:
Final Fantasy series, I - VI
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles series
Secret of Mana series
Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars
Chrono Trigger
Dragon Quest/Warrior, which is apparently published by Square Enix now?

I say Black Mage from the very first Final Fantasy (NES). I feel like he's iconic for the series and I remember being young and trying to play through FF1.

Also, a moogle would be a fun, colorful, Nintendo-ish representative of the series, especially Crystal Chronicles.

So, we all know that Geno is a popular choice. What other Nintendo-born Square characters do you think are worthy of Smash and could fit in with the crew?

Heh, yeah. Geno really would be fun and very unique for the cast.
I've been looking through http://loopy-lupe.deviantart.com/gallery/26473247 , a deviant art gallery devoted to Super Mario RPG art. Some of it is pretty good.

I legitimately would like to see Mog the moogle from FF6 in Smash Bros. Again, reminding readers that I am well aware that there is literally no chance of this happening. But Mog would be awesome- Constantly flinging spears and performing primal dances to summon nature spirits to confound his foes. What a little, furry badass.

Black Mage please. My most desired third party character of all!

Slime should be in Smash 4 given that he is the mascot of Dragon Quest, a franchise with deep ties towards Nintendo.

I would personally love to see, well, every single FF6 character. It has by far my favorite Final Fantasy characters... I've even made several movesets. Not gonna post them here because, well, who cares about them, heh.
I would mostly want to see Setzer Gabbiani, "A blackjack-playing, world-traveling, casino-dwelling free spirit..." He'd be stylishly throwing dice, darts, cards... Like Gambit from X-Men, just with more personality.
Also, King Edgar, the machinist master. Quickly bringing out an arsenal of heavy duty power tools to confuse and destroy his foes.

Such a good game, everyone who likes RPGs at all should play it.

So, Slime... I'm looking at info for it. What do people like Slime see as his powers? It seems the race's main ability is to call more slimes and sometimes... stack on top of each other? I'm also seeing a Slime named Rocket that jumps, hovers, and can "elastoblast", a charge attack to launch himself forward.

I really don't see why the have to originate on a nintendo system (as snake and sonic didn't) but oh well

Personally I would have to go with Neku or Marche

For a Final Fantasy character, I think Montblanc would fit in nicely with the smash feel.

Mostly because I don't want it to become a Sora, Sephiroth, or Cloud thread and give other characters a chance for discussion. ;) Also, it just allows at least the semblance of a chance of these characters being actually considered for the game.

I've never played the games that Neku and Marche are from. Neku seems pretty Sora-ish, same designer I assume. They look cool.

Square would just go for Warrior of Light over Black Mage.
Isn't "Warrior of Light" pretty much a term used for, like, playable characters?
Ah, looked it up. You might be right, but I really would hope not. The Black Mage is just a lot more interesting in every way compared to the Warrior of Light. The WoL is hardly even a character, just a representation of the most generic fantasy hero possible.

Black Mage is just a generic sorcerer. Not really a whole lot better.

& am I the only 1 here who prefers Mallow to Geno? Mallow at least had a personality & story arc, Geno was only good for a some exopostion that could've just as well been given by Mallow's grandpa. Such an overrated character.

Unless Square is secretly about to reboot FFVI [and spin it off into its own subfranchise — which would be awesome] exclusively for Nintendo consoles, I don't see FFVI getting any representation outside of trophies and/or other extras. Now, if Square were to bring Final Fantasy back to Nintendo, say in the form of Dissidia, then all FF characters would be viable. Theatrhythm just doesn't carry the same kind of weight, especially considering it didn't remain a 3DS exclusive for long. Square is about to go through a huge company metamorphosis so I'm curious to see what goals they have in mind post-transformation. With losing interest in the company and its products, they've got to do something else with Final Fantasy. They brought the hammer down on 'casual tablet Final Fantasies' so they can focus on the core series, so I wonder how far their spinoff market will go. Will the world of Dissidia continue?

It seems Dissidia was created to act as a cistern, collecting any and all droplets of water that trickle down from the main titles above. But it just wasn't very successful. Dissidia, Dissidia 012, Theatrhythm... they collected so many characters across the franchise, but the efforts weren't akin with Smash Bros. I certainly wouldn't advocate adding Lara Croft and the Hitman guy to Dissidia... hahahaha. Oh dear :urg:

This is why Square needs to lobby Sakurai for Final Fantasy representation in Smash Bros. This is probably driven by sheer fanboyism, but I would love to see Nintendo and Square-Enix merge. To see Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest join the ranks of Mario, Zelda, and Metroid... ugh, yes. Hell, I think Nintendo, Square-Enix, Capcom, and Namco should all merge into the Japan-based video game company. Maybe they could then compete against hungry hungry Disney who will inevitably try to consume. Consume...Consume everything.

tl;dr = Black Mage should be in SSB4 to strengthen relations between Nintendo's franchises and Final Fantasy so the two companies can merge, and then hopefully absorb Capcom and Namco as well so Japan can fight Disney.

Square Enix characters from Nintendo systems? I want Cecil Harvey from Final Fantasy IV and Carver from Dragon Quest VI and BOTH Mallow and Geno from Super Mario RPG (both or no deal). I also like the idea of a Chocobo and Slime team.

However, Black Mage is iconic, more popular, and he actually would be a lot more likely then a generic fantasy hero. Then you have to consider how many Nintendo games Black mage has been in.

In actuality, the most iconic things from Final Fantasy are creatures, not characters. I do actually feel like a moogle seems more representative of FF than even the Black Mage. In my mind even, the Black Mage was made a lot more popular by the webcomic 8-bit Theater. Moogles feature really heavily in the Nintendo exclusive Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles series, so they really do make a lot of sense as an actual representative.

@Sy: The thing is, FF magic is still special to Final Fantasy while I believe the Warrior of Light is really just a dude hitting things with a sword and a shield that occasionally sends radiant energy around. Besides, it seems like the FF universe cannon is that the WoL is a character only in Dissidia, and not related to any character ever on a Nintendo system.
Also, about Mallow vs. Geno... I think part of it is that we can sort of imagine how cool Geno could possibly look remade for the new generation while we know exactly what Mallow would look like... a marshmallow with limbs. Smash is kind of filled up on limby blobs. Also, Geno is essentially a cosmic angel on a mission that possessed a wooden body that it uses to channel divine energy... just comes off as "cooler", regardless of having a personal story arc or not.

@Spire: The thread is on the premise that none of this is likely at all, mostly a flight of fancy. I definitely don't think FF6 characters have even the slightest of chance in getting in... but I would be so very happy to see another remake of FF6, especially if it somehow granted them a chance to get in. At this point, I kind of want Square to make a blatant Smash Bros. ripoff with all of their characters in it, haha.

Black Mage makes the most sense as he's both iconic and recognizable. Plus his moveset practically writes itself.

This thread has been dead for a while, but I haven't been around the Smash Forums in a long time, either. Anyway, a Square-Enix character for smash? I'd have to go with Crono or Geno. Geno is just a cool character from the first Mario RPG ever, and Crono is an awesome swordsman from one of the greatest SNES games of all time. If I could only have one, then I would go with Crono to represent Square over Geno.

You know what I never got?

Why Mallow doesn't get any love. It's all Geno this and Geno that. I mean I get why Geno is more popular, but no one even ever seems to suggest Mallow.

I seem to feel kinda that DQ seems more closer on Nintendo than FF, what's with Fortune Street and overally startin' with Nintendo Power through "Dragon Warrior". Though dunno I might be kinda wrong but just throwin' it out.

I like Mallow, don't get me wrong. I just like the puppet better than the cloud. A being that possesses a puppet, or a cloud prince who thought he was a frog? Now I want to play SMRPG...

Magus and Frog from Chrono Trigger are the obvious choices, either them or Celes or Setzer from FF VI.

Lara croft...
She's neither a Square Enix character, nor did she originate on a Nintendo console, the first Tomb Raider was made by Eidos and was on PC and PS1. Square Enix owns Eidos now, but Lara Croft was created long before that happened.

I know but shes owned by them now and most likely would be counted as one , like how bomber man would be counted as konami or how jack frost or flynn would be counted as sega these days.
