Being a good little conformist
Yes, we’re a couple days late on reporting on this one, but with Apple—er, Nintendo’s super special press event coming up tomorrow, now is perhaps the best time to stir up a bit of extra hype.

Eagle-eyed web surfers have noticed what appears to be the boxart to Super Smash Bros. Brawl on the website of an online retailer. This part isn’t really surprising, or even that interesting: retailers, both online and not, often create mockups of boxart that hasn’t been released. Best Buy in Canada even featured an ad with Sonic on it, but it was obviously just generic artwork. And even if this were a hoax, there have been plenty of fake boxarts posted around the web too.

This one, though, is a bit different, most notably in the fact that it features a slew of character art that we haven’t seen yet. Most mockups and hoaxes just take pictures we’ve already seen—usually official artwork released by Nintendo—and manipulates them to make them look cool and flashy on a cover. (Take a look at the thread with all the fake boxart on top, and you’ll see that almost all of them use the same images of the fighters—that’s the official artwork.) This one though, if fake, represents at least a huge time investment and quite a bit of artistic handiwork.

A picture of the boxart in question and a bit more analysis follows the break. (Be warned if you’ve been avoiding newcomers, but the boxart doesn’t feature anyone who hasn’t been announced yet on the Dojo.)

One thing you’ll notice that is a bit curious is the lack of several notable characters, such as DK, Diddy, Zelda, Yoshi, Bowser, and Ike. But with the size of the cast of this game, it’s not necessary that every character end up on the cover. Melee’s US artwork just featured the starting characters in small rectangles along the sides, and even those weren’t in the preliminary versions of the artwork first released to the media. Indeed, if history is any indicator, there may be tweaks made to the art as it exists now, whether it be this or something else locked away in Sakurai’s safe.

My take? If it’s a fake, I’d be very interested in talking to the guy who made it, because he did a pretty good job. I’m inclined to think this is authentic, given the nature of preliminary artwork, and the fact that the artwork on the front is definitely new. And who knows? Maybe the back of the actual box will have all the characters who are missing.

So what do you think? Is this genuine? Fake? Will we get the real deal tomorrow? Let us know.

No sign of Wi-Fi support on the cover, but don’t forget—it could just be preliminary. The Rating Pending logo certainly won’t be on the final box, anyway.

To me, it looks authentic, but not quite official. That is to say, I believe it may be preliminary cover art that may be replaced or improved upon before the game's release. Similarly, Super Mario Galaxy has recently had its cover art updated. It's very hard to argue against the artwork: it's not your standard google images collage.

If it turns out to be fake (still a possibiliity), kudos to the creator.

My biggest problem with it is the big "RP" part. It was originally discussed to probably be E. Meaning, I believe, that this is a test one that they leaked. In other words, it's not the real one, but an idea of what it could be, kind of like a character who gets changed.

Beta? Rendering? New Art?

ya, but even if there was a few missing characters why try to cram them all on? this looks fairly organized with main characters people recognize! Plus, all the characters look like nothing we have seen before, they are all different art that is fully rendered and all that.... maybe it is just a ... beta... cover,
speaking of rendering, maybe thats why its so blurry?

p.s.: when IS that conference?

EDIT***Metroid Man, use the edit button. See how it works?*****

why would they bother to put so many characters on the box?

i think that the big-budget games (Metroid Prime 3, Halo 3, Super Mario Galaxy) are all doing closeup shots of the main characters to fill the box. This presents a situation in brawl, since no one character is the "main".

I bet that the game box will be all black with the words Super Smash Brothers Brawl on it in the fiery writing from the trailer.

No it isn't easy to create these things. To create a new pose for a character like this, you would have to have the actual 3d model, pose them, then create an image from that.

If this is painted... then just wow.

The chances of an authentic Brawl cover art not *any* from Solid Snake, Donkey Kong, Sonic, and Fire Emblem seem very, very low to me. This is probably not real, aside from how impossible it would be for anything to "leak" from the Smash camp.

I would like that to be the true boxart. It really like it. The only beef I have with it doesn't have the Wi-Fi Connection symbol in the top left corner. If this is the true boxart, then something has gone seriously wrong at Nintendo.

I do not believe it's real. It only features Characters we've seen, and I am without doubt that the real Boxart would not include Pokemon Trainer on the front, as he will probably be a 'secret character'(Although he was announced on the Dojo).

Unless, Sakurai will not release any of the unlockable characters on Dojo, which would give reason to why Snake, Meta Knight, and some of out Veterans have not made appearances yet.

Fake. Not too shabby, but it just doesn't have the super awesome design I'm expecting. I know, bad logic, but it just seems kind of weird. What's with the weird white back lighting? I think the real box art will look almost nothing like this.

If I'm wrong, oh well. I'll just have to live with weird box art for the best game ever. (Melee's wasn't terribly outstanding either though... U.S. verion that is. The Japanese art pretty much rocked. Let's hope we get the same or better than the Japanese this time.)

Definitely a fake. I highly doubt Nintendo is going to go with such poor character design. Besides the characters on the Melee covers looked closer to their game-playing counterparts. This artwork looks like it was done by someone with exceptional color pencil skills.

i say real. everything matches up right. the RP since the esrb obviously hasnt rated it yet. the original artwork. multiple retailers using it as their image, not just one. also, this might be why characters like pokemon trainer were revealed earlier than others, so they could finally release the boxart without spoiling any characters.

I'm not going to say if this is real or not but I sure hope so. I think this would be a coolbox art seeing as the last one struck me as seemingly tacky.i guess it was the little box charaxters but even if they do add those to this boxart I still say it'd be cool. Though I really hope the final product has that wifi logo

Modest Sakurai, must you always put your kirby characters in the back.

Real or not, as well made as it is, I think it looks way too chaotic. It doesn't look "awesome". It's not really fun to look at. Box art isn't going to change my mind about buying Brawl, however, if I were some person looking quickly at games in a store, I might not notice this game because the box art will look like a jumbled blur of colors and a blue/white background.

Agreed with above poster.

I think it needs to look less epic..this is Smash were talking about..
There needs to be some sort of conflict on the box, like the first 2 boxes..
Thats what I think.

I think epic is what Sakurai is going for (remembersthe main theme),so yes this box art fits nicely.

To anyone who is calling this "fake": no, this is real. This is definitely rendered using the same models in the "official artwork" character renders used at the beginning of each character introduction on the Dojo. They are all posed differently meaning that no one just photoshopped them together. And the lighting in the background is playing off of them which means that is part of the render as well.

However, this is not the final boxart - that much is obvious simply because it says 'RP' - obviously, since the game isn't finished yet, it hasnt been submitted to the ESRB for review yet. And don't forget that a render like that can be used for multiple purposes, since the logos that appear on the American boxart are not necessarily the logos that appear on the Japanese boxart (ESRB is a good example).

Every company releases preliminary placeholder boxart for big games way ahead of time so that retailers that take pre-orders or advertise the game early can help spread the hype. This boxart does that well, and could even be very similar to the final version, but it doesnt have to be.

Hey everyone, this is Geno, Mallow, Wario, Waluigi. I made that account a long time ago and have barely used it since. And since that name sucks, and there's no way to just change your name (or delete an account), this is my username from now on. I know this isn't the right thread for that but since I've mainly been active in the Blog discussions I figured I'd say it here.

It fits nice, and it was done well, but for SSBB it should be better. It should feature that small sidewindows with all the characters again, show the epicness of ACTUAL Brawling, and feel....like the actually game=exactly like Melee's cover. But ya know, maybe add those Subspace Army guys and that Minister guy on there to, to spice it up a little. Still, it's a great imposter, but it will be nothing compared to the real artwork on the cover! :)

Wow, this was interesting news to me.
The thing that gets me interested in this is that the art looks very very professional, while still keeping to the style of the models we’ve seen on
Brawl so far. If this is fake, the guy that did it knows what he’s going,
but I’m going to go with my “Brawl lova” side her and guess that this is official preliminary Brawl-box art. I can see this (Or summat close to it) sitting next to me in the car in a few months, I really can. The doubts for people I imagne are:

No mention of WI-FI on the cover.
All the characters are ones we’ve seen on the DOJO!!

The Wi-fi thing I ignore, remember this IS in the making, as Kirby King said, but the character thing worries me a bit…but it could be that it is official and real, and the other characters on going to be added in the little captions a la’ Melee, on the back, or added later in production.

I think this is real, myself.
