EPITA SMASH ARENA 2
23rd & 24th February 2008

Hello there everyone ! The next edition of Europe's best organized tournament ever is coming ! The first tournament was a success, though a lot of people didn't show up in the end. Everyone enjoyed the tournament, everyone could play whenever they wanted !
Well... This time it's going to be the same, but with more of everything ! More people, more cash prize, more events, more TVs... and less entrance fee ;)
To make sure this happens, we'll get advertising from the official French Nintendo Mag. After ESA, they already made an article about the tournament, and when we announce the final date, they'll make a news about it.
The article in the Nintendo Mag -> http://mastergorn.free.fr/Autres/N-1179765883.jpg
We will also advertise in videogame shops around Paris and on famous french videogame sites. Here is the poster we made for the tournament :
http://scorpiomilo.free.fr/Avatars/affiche-epita_full_information.jpg
As for the tournament itself, there will be sponsors this time, so there should be a lot of prizes and surprises !

THE DATE IS NOW 100% CONFIRMED. KEEP BOOKING !
YOU CAN START PAYING ONLINE !

/!\IMPORTANT/!\
YOU HAVE TO REGISTER ON CYCOM WEBSITE TO ATTEND THE TOURNAMENT, EVEN IF YOU DON'T PAY IN ADVANCE. FOR DETAILS, SEE THE "HOW TO PAY" PARAGRAPH BELOW !

How to pay ?
- First, remember to on the SSBUP list. Click here to access the list, if you didn't do it.
- You must register (well, once again) ! Click here to go on Cycom's website. For those who don't know, Cycom is the association of Epita students who help us organise this tournament. And know what ? They're french, but their website has an english version. Incredible, I know. So, register on their website. They ask for your name and some stuff like that, and those can be seen in the player list, so if you don't want to enter it, just don't fill some boxes if you don't want to. But I'd like you to enter you age, your location (especially country), since it will help us for the organisation and your registration when you'll arrive at the venue. A valid email may also be useful, so please enter it. You'll be able to modify your infos afterwards if you want.
- Once you registered on Cycom website, search the "Epita Smash Arena 2" box on the main page, and then "register". They'll only ask you if you bring hardware, and just say you don't. We may ask some of you to bring their cube if we don't have enough, but for now, there's o need of them ;)
- You registered on the SSBUP list ? And on the Cycom website ? Well, the only thing left to do is paying. In order to do so, you can either use paypal, either send a check to Cycom.
The email adress for the paypal payment is the following : contact@cycom-xperience.com . Also, for the paypal payment, I (Slhoka) am sorry to tell you that because of my almost inexistent paypal knowledge, I didn't add the paypal tax in the prices we listed. They take 5% of the amount payed, which means that if you want to order a 20€ pass and use paypal, you'll have to pay 21€. And 31,5€ if you order a 30€ pass and 42€ for a 40€ pass. Don't forget to mention your gamer tag in the paiment side message, as well as something like "payment ESA2" in the title. It would also be useful to give your name in the paiement message, so we can verify if no one comes at the venue saying he's you.

If you want to pay by check, you have to order it to Cycom the address is the following :
Charles Ducauze
9bis rue des Mécardes
92190 Meudon
France
Don't forget to mention your gamer tag, and if possible you name.

If you need help, send a PM to me or Slhoka, we'll answer you as soon as possible.
The Venue

The venue will be the same as last time. It's located in the best programming school in Paris : Epita. It's really close to Paris, about half an hour away from anything interesting in Paris, like the Eiffel Tower.
Its adress is :
66 rue Guy Moquet
94800 VILLEJUIF
EPITA

Travel Informations

Paris is pretty easy to reach by plane or train depending from where you come from. I suggest you check www.ryanair.com for cheap plane tickets (arrive at Paris Beauvais).
Other airports like Charles de Gaulles or Orly are better because they are closer to Paris. It takes about 2 hours to get to Paris from Beauvais, about 1 hour from Charles de Gaulles and about 30 minutes from Orly.

From Orly : Once in the airport and free to go, follow the signs "Trains to Paris" and take the RER B direction Paris. To go to Epita, stop at the station "Denfert Rochereau" and follow the connexion to "Ligne 6 direction Nation". Stop at "Place d'Italie" and follow the connexion to "Ligne 7 direction Villejuif - Ivry". When you take the train, make sure it indicates both on the train itself and in the air on an electronic board that this train goes to "Villejuif" and NOT "Ivry". You may want to ask people, "Villejuif?" pointing at the train, they'll answer "oui" or "non" :). Once you boarded the train, wait for the station "Villejuif Paul-Vaillant Couturier" and get off. Now you just need to walk for 5 minutes looking for the Epita school. Turn right after the Ford building right outside the metro station. You should see a "Franprix" (a chain of cheap stores), a Chinese restaurant and then a little place with a Bakery at the angle. Take the big street to the right (you should see a lot of mess with a new building growing... that's the street). Go straight forward and turn right after you've seen the hospital on your right. Again, go straight for a few minutes and you should see what looks like a school on your left. here you are !

From Charles de Gaulles : Once in the Airport, follow the signs "Trains to Paris", you may have to take a (free) bus to switch to another terminal. Take any train going to Paris and stop at the station "Denfert Rochereau". For the rest, it's the same as when you come from Orly.

From Beauvais : You have to take a bus to the central station of Beauvais, then take a train to Paris, then you arrive in Gare St Lazare. From there, you have tons of ways to get to "Ligne 7 Villejuif Paul-Vaillant Couturier". You may take "Ligne 14 direction Olympiades", stop at "Châtelet" and follow the connexion to "Ligne 7 direction Villejuif - Ivry". For the rest, read the Orly way.

By Train :
- The Eurostar
The Eurostar train departs from London at Waterloo station. You will have to go through customs and show IDs. You arrive at Gare du Nord. Follow the signs for metro "Ligne 5 direction Place d'Italie". Get off the train at the last station, Place d'Italie. For the rest, read the Orly way.
- Other trains
If you come from Belgium or The Netherlands, you will arrive at Gare du Nord, always. So the same itinerary as the Eurostar one just above.
If you come from Switzerland or Italy, you will arrive at Gare de Lyon (yes, this is a train station in Paris, a big one !). From there, you can walk to "Gare d'Austerlitz" and take metro "Ligne 5 direction Place d'Italie". For the rest, refer to the Eurostar's explanation.

By Bus
I don't know any other company than Eurolines but I believe most busses stop at two main bus terminals.
- La Défense
La Défense is a huge bus station (and an economical center). When you arrive with Eurolines, You have to follow the metro signs and walk through a long pedestrian-only tunnel. Take metro "Ligne 1 direction Château de Vincennes". Take the connexion at station "Louvre" and follow metro "Ligne 7 direction Villejuif-Ivry". When you board the metro for this connexion, make sure you take a metro going to "Villejuif" and NOT "Ivry". For the rest, refer to the Orly explanation.
- Gallieni
From Gallieni, follow metro "Ligne 3 direction Pont de Levallois Bécon" and stop at station "République". Follow the connexion to "Ligne 5 direction Place d'Italie" and get off at the last stop. For the rest, refer to the Orly explanation.

Various Costs
- Orly to Paris by RER costs 2.10€ euros One way.
- Charles de Gaulle to Paris by RER costs 8.20€ euros One way.
- Beauvais train station to Paris Gare du Nord costs 11.70€ euros One way.
- A single metro/bus/tramway ticket costs 1.50€ euros.
- A pack of 10 metro/bus/tramway ticket costs 11.10€ euros. (I advise you to buy that if you're a group and planning to visit Paris a bit).
When you buy a RER ticket, once you get in Paris, you can use it as a metro ticket, no need to pay 1.50€ extra. Same for the way back, buy your RER ticket, use it for the metro and then for the RER.

Entry Fee

/!\UPDATE/!\At the beginning we announced it would be cheaper than the first one, but in order to have a better tournament, with more people, more TVs etc, we decided to let the entry fee remain at 40 € euros if you pay in advance. If you pay on the day of the tournament, it will cost you 5€ extra. You will have 3 possible choices :
- Bottom Tier Pass, for 20 € euros. You can come either Saturday or Sunday, but you can't get the meals and you can't sleep at the venue.
- Low Tier Pass, for 30 € euros. You can stay for the 2 days but you can't stay at night and you can't have the meals.
- Top Tier Pass, for 40 € euros. You get everything.

General Informations

/!\UPDATE/!\The tournament's limit of participants is 256. We won't be able to let anyone not in the list enter the place. We will be very strict about that, so don't show up unannounced.

Bring Your Own Controller !!! This rule applies here aswell. And keep your things with you, one never knows. About theft, we are going to apply some quite strict measures. People who bring their console and game have to feel safe about lending them. Therefore, only the staff will be allowed to touch any console. As a participant, all you should worry about is plugging your controller in and out.

If you happen to bring a wavebird, bring a wire controller in case there are too many wavebirds (16 out of 200 is easy to reach). If you bring a wavebird, please report it when you get checked at the entrance.

For the general well-being of everyone, no one can justify throwing something on the floor. There will be enough trash cans all around the venue.

Drinking alcohol in the venue will be completely forbidden. For people who will drink, it will be difficult to climb up 2 levels of stairs to get back inside the venue ! Think about it...

On a 256 attendants basis, there should be 32 pools of 8 players each. Top 4 of each pool advances to the 2nd round of pools. 2nd round of pools should have 16 pools in total, 8 players in each pool. Top 4 advances to a 64-man bracket.

The tournament will be run with TIO. Results will be posted here and in SWF's Results section and also on TIA.
Check out ESA 2's page on TIA. Don't hesitate, register on this website, it will make it easier for archiving tournament results.

Since Brawl will be released in the US and in Japan by the time the tournament takes place, there will most likely be a few brawl games. For security reasons, we will have to separate them from the melee TVs. Access will be controlled. We might be able to organize some kind of event with the game though. But don't forget, this is a melee event, mainly.

Time Table

- 9am - 10am
We open the venue ! Everything will be ready for you to play instantly ! Tournament rules will be on, so don't mess with them please :). Get some warm ups, say hello to everyone (that is gonna take a long time) and prepare yourself for Singles !

- 10am - 10pm
We will play Singles all day long, litterally. There will be no Food Break but around 1pm you should be able to pick your lunch and eat it whenever you can between matches. Rules are below.

- 10pm - 3am (Sunday)
There will be several events during this time :
Crew Battle All-Stars French This is a special event that consists in making 2 crews both equal in players and level (more or less, one crew will remain, of course). Makenshi and I have selected 14 top players for this event :
  • Crew 1
  • Makenshi
  • ClemJ
  • Doraki
  • Agony
  • Qlex
  • Dou!
  • Vargas
  • Crew 2
  • Joanna Dark
  • Poilon
  • Aska
  • Baxon
  • Infernum
  • Thieum
  • Darko
The 2 crews will face each other in a very competitive way but it's only for the show and fun of it !
Low Tier Tournament It will start with a double elimination bracket, rules are below.
Super Smash Bros 64 Tournament There should be enough 64s for this tournament to happen, aswell as enough controllers ^^. Rules will be announced later here.
Super Smash Bros Brawl mini Tournaments Yes, Brawl will be out and I'm sure we will have a few copies here at ESA 2. People who bring the game and the NTSC console (or their modified console) will of course have priority for entering these mini tournaments. As long as we have 3 or 4 Brawl games, we can make mini tournaments during 5 hours, like one tournament for every hour. We'll figure out rules by the time ESA 2 takes place.
Freeplay TVs There will be a lot of TVs to play freeplay on when the bracket will be half completed already. When Singles is over, we will keep about 10 TVs for freeplay ! Maybe more if we feel we can let it happen.

- 3am - 9am
Freeplay or Sleep, you choose.

- 9am - 3pm
Team Tournament will start with a double elimination bracket. Rules are below. Same as Saturday, there will be no lunch break, but you will be able to pick up your food at some point during the tournament.

- 3pm - 7pm
Regional Crew Battles will start with a double elimination bracket. Countries will be seeded. Rules are below.

Special Event
Slhoka will make a conference about DIs (in french, for thoses who might understand it ^^) during Singles, after half the bracket is complete, which should be around 6pm.

Seeding

We will release the seeding about 3 weeks before the tournament, in the mean time, I would need the Spanish to send me a rough Power Ranking. I will get international help with other people who know a lot of people in the European community to make this seeding the most fair possible, and the best possible for the competition.

Food & Housing

Since ESA2 is a 2 days event, we will provide housing from friday to monday to anyone coming. If you HAVE TO come before and/or leave after these days, please send me a pm !
Also, we will provide food for the 2 days.
That said, we're only counting on Parisian smashers to provide housing. Therefore, it is going to be very hard to house everyone.
If you can afford a hotel room for about 10-15 euros a night (probably a shared room), the confort will be way better than at a smasher's house, where it will mostly be crowded.
But the hotel is a last ressource possibility, we're really doing our best to motivate possible housers. Just be financially prepared...
In any case, we will indicate you where to go either it's a smasher or a hotel, we will tell you when we know for sure.

On Saturday night, anybody who paid for it (check out the entry fee paragraph) will sleep in a separate sleeping room, where you'll be able to put your bags and jackets during the day. For security reasons, this room will be locked most of the time during the day. This night should be the only one you will spend in the venue.

The food will be arranged during the tournament only (4 meals). We don't have the menu yet but we won't forget vegetarians, vegans or muslims ^^.

i have a question about the ruleset

stalling is completely banned

so using the shino stall once or twice results in a loss, or is it just banned to do it like 5 seconds or more?

Shino "stall" isn't even a stall, it can be punished easily.
If you can use it to stall a match indefinitely then your opponent is a ******.

Three questions:

What caused the massive flaking last time?

Can you guarantee higher prize pay out than last time?

And what if Brawl is out in jan/february? :p

Those plane-tickets really are cheap. Just that the airport lies 2, 3 hours away, and goes to marseille in south france. <__< Not that I would be coming anyways, just dreaming or something like that.

Much advartisement you have done. =a lot of people. Didn't that other French tournament have many people too?

ESA 1 already had something like 90 people or more. It was already very big !
the massive flake out came from the fact that the date changed all of a sudden like a month and a half or less before the tournament. This caused a lot of frenchies not to come, and also some foreigners probably. This time, the date WON'T change once we announce it clearly.

Last time, a lot of people said that they wanted to come, and i hoped for 200 people, but only 90 people was coming, because it was 40 euros entry fee, and a lot of people said that it was too expansive ... (40 euros for 2 days with food and housing ...).
Now the entry fee will be cheaper because I'll have sponsors. And now, because the first tournament was really great, Epita(my school) will give some money for the tournament too.
So I can guarantee that it will be a bigger and greater tournament than the last with a better cash prize (i think about 1000 euros of cash prize at least by tournament) because i'll have more money and i've more experience.

This tournament will be the best in europe ever.

And about your last question, Helios : The event will be a SSBM event, whatever happens.
However, if SSBB is released before the tournament, there might be a tournament for Brawl.

you people are free to advertise the tournament wherever you want, on other boards etc !
happy to see that way more foreigners want to come :)
more frenchies will attend because of the less expensive entry fee :)
oh and don't forget to register on the link and the end of the first post :)

It will be during a weekend for sure, but about holidays, I don't know, cuz Poilon is probably trying to arrange the date for french holidays. If you have holidays in february, that's cool, but if you don't, the tourny won't be moved to another month :p

I already registered. I want a tournament for Melee, don´t care if Brawl will be already released at the tournament´s date since ESA2 would be a great way to say goodbye to Melee.

Well because this tourney is in France I´ll try to write my posts in this thread in French. I used to study french for 5 years but I think it wasn´t enough to speak this language properly. Maybe my stay in Paris will improve my French.

________________________________ <- Dividing line xD

WOW Spain step it up !
it would be the first time I ever meet a Spanish smasher ! O_O
can't wait ^^.
I thought you attended a tournament in Spain, once. Or was it Doraki and DD ?

Anyway, it would be great to have Spanish smashers in Paris. Because the Spanish community is quite unknown =/

Nah, the german community has at least both travelled abroad quite a bit, AND it's had several international tourneys.

EDIT: And it has Luma! :O

I'd really like to go to this, but I don't think my parents would let me... Maybe if I stepped up my school work and improved my grades. We'll see.
