The title explains it all. Many of you put hard hours and time making your combo vids together, and i feel that the many compliments of "OMG teh winzzz" or " you inspire me to play____" isn't enough. Thats why i took it upon myself to reward the players that spend countless hours making their combo vids. And thats when i came up with this idea. To make the "2008 Combo Video Awards" or (as i hope in the future for it to be referenced as) the: "CVA's". I envision this to be as traditional as the "smashboard awards" or "sexiest mod awards". Because come on, we all learn a thing or two from watching a combo vid here and there. The jist is simple, make a kickass vid and submit it here, as the year passes many combo vids will surface but which is deemed the best? Come on one has to stand above all the other? "The panel" and myself will be looking for:

  • Music
  • Animation
  • Combos
  • Lasting Appeal
  • Editing
  • Quality
  • Creativity

I think you are forgetting this is brawl, and there is basically no hitstun o_O.

anyways, any rules on how many you can submit? im working on my 2nd combo video (which i hope is alot better than my first).

well yeah hitstun aside, some combos can still be pulled off...


but no there is no limit... i plan to get around 25 posts before i get started. What i want to do is for every vid anyone submits is create their name, like a tab, then put that vid and any other vids under their name, make sense?


but what do you think how will it turn out, succes or fail?

from i've seen so far.. there are some really good vids so far so i hope to get their support sometime soon. But i want them to "submit" theyre own vid, rather than me just taking the url so yea....

I'm starting a project soon, but it wont be done for awhile. I was wondering if its possible to submit trailer or would it have to be a full video?

My personal goal is to try and bring a new feel on fighting videos. Hopefully my video will change the way on how smash videos will be critiqued/viewed.

Thats a big impact you're trying to make, but hey go for it.
And that depends do you want to get judged on a trailer, or your finished product. Don't rush it man... 2008 ain't over..... if you wanna show of you're trailer make a thread in this room... build some hype, make a little teaser, save the trailers for Spielberg k. ;)

I love this idea, and I think you need to think bigger if you want this to be a lasting, yearly thing that people really get into.

Prizes aren't really necessary, but they're a great touch if you've got Wii points to spare or can swindle some donations out of people.

I suggest separate awards for each category you've listed, plus some others. There are a lot of combo/montage videos out there, so there might as well be a lot of awards. You could nominate a set of videos for each award, then assemble a panel of judges to decide who gets the "Smashy" in each category.

Of course you need a 'Best Overall Video' award that incorporates all the other categories (and that should be the one that gets the prizes, if any), but why not include other awards such as:

Best Gameplay - are these good-looking combos/juggles against talented players? Criteria could include originality (is this new exciting stuff or the same combos we've seen in everyone else's vids?), skill of opponent (negative points for CPUs imo), technical skill required, and the ever-important omgwtf! factor.

Best Editing - doesn't necessarily have to be done with fancy video-editing software, but how well does it flow, how good does it look, does it have eye-catching titles and credits etc. should be keys to this category.

Best Music - how well does the music fit/sync with what's going on, does it have anything to do with what we're watching, etc.

Best Comedy - because smashing doesn't have to be serious business.

Best Low-tier - once there's an official tier list, that is.

Best Multi-char - self explanatory

Dude that's exactly what i was thinking, and some of those categories that you mentioned i thought of, but it would seem to much work for me. But by the inclusion of a "panel", so-to-speak, i could be more places at once, get it? But i wouldn't know who to pick, because if it ever got tot serious, bribes begin to arise, know what i mean? But yeah i'll give it some though, i've just been really busy and all with TAKS test coming up but yeah i'l definitely look into it.

I seriously doubt bribes will ever become an issue, but bias could be.

I'd suggest you select your panel members carefully for each category to make sure that nobody on the panel is a good friend of one of the entrants or would have some other obvious bias for or against any of the entrants.

You don't necessarily need the same panel for each category. For example, your "Best Gameplay" award panel should probably include mostly pros who can be excellent judges of the skill involved in what's going on on-screen (that certainly would not include me).

Since you're running the show, but you sound open to suggestions, I'd suggest you run the show like this:

First, wait. The game's been out like a month and a half. Give it a while. Decide which categories you want. Announce which categories there will be, sometime soon. Start taking nominations by category. Set a date for close of nominations for the 2008 Smashy awards sometime this summer or fall. Any nominations that come in after that date should be a part of the 2009 Smashy Awards. From the nominations you receive, narrow it down to, let's say... 4-6 vids in each category. Choose an odd number of smashboarders you trust for each panel. I'd suggest 5 or 7. Give them some time to review the vids and vote for a winner, which they should report only to you. Then post all the winners, with links to their vids, in one great big post later in the year.

Whaddya think? I think video awards are a great idea, and I think more people will get excited about it and take it seriously if you make it as structured, as unbiased (with objective criteria) and as well-executed as possible. I'd be happy to help.

so is there going to be like, a list of all the vids on the main page or anything? and how il teh voting be done?

YEA lol... been really busy lately, big test going on at my school so yea.

Whats going to happen is there is going to be a section for each "producer" if you will, and how ever many vids he makes well go under his name ( the year IS long by the way). And i plan on getting a premium membership to make a poll, if not than through PM's seems like the logical choice.

BUT SIMPLY YES.. by the weekend they list should be UP!
