SQUAT IV

Update: Venue is subject to change, but is set to Helensvale Community Centre
Update2: Date TBC, but likely to be set to the 25th of November.

Okay, we're already nearing the end of October, and with SQUAT IV scheduled for early/mid-December, we have to get planning. The dates will really just sneak up on us if we're not careful.

To that end, I have started this thread to kickstart planning.

Topics to be discussed:

1. Venue
2. What did you like/dislike from SQUAT 3 and what should be implement/introduced in IV?
3. Money: Entry/Prizes/Distribution
4. Promotion strategy: How we will get more peoples!
5. Date of tournament

---

So first, lets discuss the 3 points. I'll update the first post periodically to keep track of the general consensus.

--

Tournament Rules from SQUAT 3:

1. The Singles and 2v2 Brackets will be Double Elimination.
2. The Losers Bracket will have mixed placement to avoid players being eliminated by the same opponent that beat them in the Winner's Bracket.
3. All matches are best of 3 except for the Finals (best of 5).
4. Lives will be set at 4 stock with an 8 minute time limit.
5. Ties will be broken by stock left and then by percentage of health. Sudden death will be played if both the stock and percentage are tied at the end of the time limit.
6. Items will be turned off.

Stages & Character Select

1. The first round stage is selected by random, but if both players (teams) can agree on a stage then the first match can be played on any stage they agree upon except one from the banned list below.
2. Random Select Stages - Final Destination, Battlefield, Yoshi's Story, Fountain of Dreams, Rainbow Cruise, Kirby 64, & Pokemon Stadium.
3. Stages Banned - Hyrule Temple, Fourside, Flatzone, Brinstar Depths, Icicle Mountain, Big Blue, Termina Bay, Poke Floats, and Yoshi's Island 64.
4. Stages not listed on the random select list, that are not banned, are open for counter picks by the losing player.
5. "Dave's Stupid Rule" - no stage can be used twice in a single match(not everyone likes fd), whether by random select or by picking.
6. Knock-out - after initial characters have been selected and only before the first match is played, each person may knock off one stage from the available tournament stages. That stage will be turned off for the entire set.
7. Advanced Slob Picks - the loser may choose the next stage or elect to go random, then the winner may change characters, and then the loser may change characters.
8. Double-Blind Pick - at the beginning of a match, any player may call for a double-blind pick. This means that all participating players tell a judge their character secretly and are required to use that character for the first game.

Special Team Rules

1. Team Attack ON
2. Life stealing allowed
3. During teams (2vs2) Mute City and Fountain of Dreams are banned due to match disrupting lag.
4. The higher seeded team gets priority pick of controller ports, team colour and seating.

Other Rules & Special Issues

1. Any unnecessary pausing of the game will result in a forfeit of that single game.
2. Glitches used to stop your opponent from controlling their character or indefinitely freezing them (Mewtwo's Soul Stunner, the Ice Climber freeze glitch), or any glitch or trick that freezes the game or makes it in any way unfinishable are banned and will result in the immediate forfeit of the entire match.
3. Tactics such as Peach's Wallbombing and Jiggly's Rising Pound are allowed as methods of recovery or to maneuver around the stage. Using them (or any similar tactics) to excessively stall a match, such as droping below levels intentionally and stalling underneath, is banned. If by using one of these tactics, you have put your character in a place to lose a stock by ending the tactic, a judge may force you to stop the tactic and lose a stock.

Match Format

1. Each player chooses a seat and controller port. If both players want the same controller port, a coin flip will determine the winner of the port. The loser may then choose whichever seat he wants.
2. Players then choose their character and have 30 seconds to do so. If any player does not select their character at the end of 30 seconds or if any player calls for it, a double blind pick will be used. Once a player has placed their coin on a character's image to select it, they may not change characters
3. Once characters have been selected the highest player in the highest controller port position may press start to go to the level select screen. Once on the level select screen, each player may choose their stages to knock-out (see Stages & Character Select rule #6) and then either agree on a stage together or select a stage at random. Any arguing over stages will be interrupted by the judges and random stage select will be used.
4. Players play their first match.
5. Once they have returned to the character select screen, the losing player from the previous match must announce their choice for the next level or elect to have the next level selected at random. Once the stage selection has been announced, the winning player may choose to change their character. Once the winning player has chosen his character for the next match, the losing player may then choose to change characters. After the stage and characters have been set, the players play their second match.
6. If the winning player wins again, he wins the set and must report the score to a judge. If the losing player from the previous match wins, repeat #5 (above) and play the third match. Winner of the third match must report the score to a judge.

Crew Battle Rules:
1. Both teams start with same amount of stock.
2. Each team must write down each participating players name as well as their assigned character. Players are not allowed to change characters once they are written down.
3. Stage counterpicking is allowed.
4. In case of a tie and sudden death will be played on final destination.
5. No other games to be played during the crew battle.
6. At the beginning of matches, both players must wait for any and all invincibility frames to wear off.

Though it's a fantastic idea, I really think we shouldn't be discussing about it now.

vyse

I disagree.

SQUAT: Supernova is a great idea, but right now that's all it is. We need to open lines of communication with SuperNova and make sure we organise it now. Not only do they need time to organise things such as floor space considerations, we also have the Dragon ball Z: Budokai player to contend with.

It's something that'll require alot of time and planning, and so we should discuss it now.

Well, apart from the fact that many Uni students, and I have their projects due very very very soon; we'll have to worry about when, where, how SQUAT4 is going to happen. Most of TECH are also going to Melbourne for CoA, so it's also high priority, tickets and all.

IMO, the ideal time to discuss this is when our school has finished, that's when we'll have time.

Okay, fair enough.
I'll do what I can concerning SQUAT: Supernova and keep you guys posted.

In the mean time SQUAT IV!

Supanove isnt until arpil so we should keep it under wraps until after CoA. As for SQUAT 4 im up for the awesomeness of the valley and its air conditionedness. I think we should try and get the money matters organised asap e.g. get everyones entry fee prior ot the event, then at the event put in money towards the pot. Instead of paying one sum amount.

I totally dig SQUAT: Supernova. It will give us a chance to preach smash to the masses.

"Gather round brothas and sistas. In the beginning there was Fox, Fox begat Falco, Falco begat Sheik, Shiek begat Marth......

Also I know JazBlack tried to run one at animania Sydney, but I was told it didn't work out, so hopefully this will.

Seeing as it's an anime convention, I'll bet that possibly a number of interstate players could find the prospect of attending very compelling, upon entry you'll get to watch free movies, see and be apart of the free events (Cosplay FTW) and get to buy lots of anime/manga merchandise.

Yeah Jaz tried to run one but they told him no.
And they were really lame about it.

(Stuff in bold= LAME)

Uh, right SQUAT 4, if it is mid December onwards I should be able to make it.
Just depends what job/s I do or don't get.
And stuff.
But yeah, I'll do what I can.

Darkwing SykeDuk

Your lame if you think thats lame. I only went to supanove last year to buy some anime goodies, its just lucky i went cause then ward people would have been stuck their.

Sieg

Syke saved them from the horrible place that is Supernova.

But Syke loses points for putting them out at midnight in the Valley.

Animania is only very small when compared to SuperNova, which is why is probably didn't work out. This is why I want to organise it uber early, SuperNova previously expressed interest in the idea, so we'll see.

Okay, how about whichever Saturday is closest to the 15th?
Though most importantly, we need to ascertain the locale.

Because it's easier for me, I'm just going to vote for Helensvale Community centre.
Everbody should cast their votes now.

EDIT: Keep these thoughts in mind

1. Air conditioning does not make you play better
2. Helensvale rocks yes, but so does Syke's projector

I vote the PCYC. However i don't really care.

10-27-2006, 01:43 AM
Both trips take just as much time for me, so I dont really care.

Sieg
10-27-2006, 01:47 AM
I don't mind, the train trip last time was really fun.

But, Helensvale is just as cool.

Scrubs
10-27-2006, 02:48 AM
Hahaha everyone is saying 'I don't mind' or 'I don't care'

Here we go my pros and cons lists.

PCYC

Pros:

- Aircon
- Plenty of chairs tables power points etc
- Close to Brisbane CBD therefore transport
- Worked well last time
- Projectorz
- Close to food and shops

Cons

- Far away from the Ward. Meaning some people may have to leave early.
- More expensive than Helensvale.

Helensvale

Pros

- Close to the Ward.
- Plenty of space + outside area for sport or other activities.
- Cheaper than PCYC

Cons

- Far away from Tech (but we have a car so that is kind of nullified, we won't be able to provide as many tv's as we did for SQUAT 4 because only a certain amount will fit in the car and i am not making 2 trips)
- No projectorz
- Tech have to get up bloody early to get there
- Tech may die on the way down because of crazy drivers on the M1 (only a con for tech)

Umm yeah all i could think of. I think we should hold it at the venue that will attract the highest numbers and will allow people to stay for the longest amount of time. What i mean by that is that i don't want to have it at a venue that causes people to leave early. That probably means Helensvale because correct me if i am wrong but most of the the Wards parents want them back at a reasonable time. Meaning they can't stay at the PCYC until 6pm because they will get back home at about 8pm.

Therefore, we will hold it at Surfers Paradise.

Sieg
10-27-2006, 04:08 AM
Well, Anthony's idea was to hold it over two days.

He's always telling me that we should, idea perhaps?

Also, the easiest way to beat the M1 guys is to Drift race them.

Get that Rat
10-27-2006, 04:28 AM
We only have around 15 people in this tournament, to hold is over 2 days is a waste of money and time.

Sieg
10-27-2006, 04:37 AM
We have more than 15 btw.

It was just an idea, no more than a mere example to add to the pool.

In the end, I really don't mind.

Darkwing SykeDuk
10-27-2006, 05:01 AM
No we dont have more than 15, thats how many were thier. 2 Days is way to long, remember we were able to have a 2nd crew battle and we were still out fo their with 30 mins to spare. If you want overnight then talk to josh abo it.

Sieg
10-27-2006, 05:05 AM
I was just saying it was an idea.

I don't really want it, it's just an idead Antho was putting up for some time.

Also, there were way more than 15.

The power ranking lists only have 15 and that's missing out on some people.

Well, not way more, but there were more.

mmmm........

SQUAT at supanova? While i've been shopping at nova before i'd prefer to separate my interests on this occasion.

Reasons:

1) White kids dressed as Yugi from Yugi-oh
2) White kids dressed as Goku/Vegeta
3) White kids dressed as random Gayblade (Beyblade) character
4) White kids dressed up

On the other hand while personally i think it's too late at this stage to try and get new people to enter the scene, if this is our purpose then this is definitely the best chance of doing it. Otherwise i can see no other perks to holding SQUAT at Supanova.
