View Full Version : Can Japanese even pronounce "Brawl"?

Seems like a bad title to give the new Smash if half of your audience can't even pronounce it. Japanese speakers generally have a hard enough time with the 'r' and 'l' of English, but putting them together may be disasterous. Here's what I picture the title screen audio to sound like:
SUPER SMAAASH BROTHERS:
BRRRAAARLLRROOO!!!
Though, I suppose it's a fair trade: They gave English speakers a retarded system name (I still can't believe they're going with "Wii"), so the Japanese get an un-pronounce-able title for what (hopefully) will be the best game of all time.

Man, and you guys lock my threads for being pointless?

It's not too late for Nintendo to change the title, but now that I think about it, it probably won't happen. Guess people will just have to convert to learn English.
err, ENGRISH. Man, and you guys lock my threads for being pointless? That's not me. And nobody's thought of this repercussion as of yet, so since it's a new idea it's not TECHNICALLY spam . . . yeah.

I think they would pronounce it buraru
so would it sound like...
SUPERU SMASH-A BRRROOTHEROS BRRRAAARLLRROOO!!! or like....
SSUUUPPPAAA SUUMAASHHYUUU BUURAADAAASSUUU BRRRAAARLLRROOO!!!
i think we need someone who speaks the language here...
Super Smash Bros. Melee is Supaa sumashu burazasu DX in Japanese, and it's usually abbreviated to SumaBura. This'll probably get abbreviated to SumaBuraBura

Umm, the game is called "Super Smash Bros. X" in Japan. Just check out the official site:

Oh, well I guess that solves the problem quite handily, doesn't it?
But it's not nearly as catchy as 'braarrruu' . . .

yeah i like brarruu better
"X" isn't pronounceable either. If I didn't know how to say it, I'd probably spit out "Supa Sumasha Burota Burao." :ohwell:

Who cares.
When I released Super Smash Bros. Melee for Nintendo GameCube, I ran a detailed and extensive site on the game in Japan called "Smabura-Ken" . (In Japan, "SmaBura" is short for "Smash Bros.")
They can't even pronounce smash bros right... so yeah <_<

Wait.... why WOULD they call it brawl?
Don't they have their own language they can name it in?

Somewhere (IGN?) said that brawl is not the final name.

That seems entirely probable. I just think that if they were to make a name, they need to step it up a notch. Melee was good, brawl seems like a step down in a way. They need some more dramaticism, maybe Super Smash Bros. Anihilation or something. BTW, shouldnt the Japanese be saying their equivalent translation of "brawl" in thier language?

Right, naming matters a lot. And please name the console the game will be made for.

The Japanse arent unhuman. They have mouths, vocal chords, and everything else we have. Sheesh. They can pronounce x just fine, as well as brawl if they try a little.

Anihilation sounds corny and does not fit the game at all. This game isn't about spreading blood.

I'll accept any name, as long as the game rocks.
the main text you're reading this is SUMABURAKEN X, or, the large text is, at least. I'm not really sure that's about. But the title at the top of the page says "Dairantou sumasshu buraza-su X". The japanese video also gives that title. BTW, X is noted on the page as being pronounced 'ekkusu'.
And the japanese naming of products with english words is nothing new. I dont know, they like english words. Kind of like how americans get tattoos of chinese/japanese characters they may or may not know the meaning of.
I guess the point is, Brawl is the NA subtitle.

:yoshi: Why is this thread still open?
It's called "X" in the Japanese version, and it might even change before it's done.
The end.
