Have you seen the screenshots? I've seen 35 pictures and in some of them there seems to be cutscenes where Link,Mario, or Samus make a really flashy attack where it seems unescapeable , at least the Link super move: http://media.revolution.ign.com/media/748/748545/img_3595441.html

I think this is gonna turn out like Budokai or some sh*t or Marvel vs. Capcom2...

What you guys think?

It looks like they're making it into a conventional fighter. Bull****.

I think you have a pretty name. And I doubt the biggest Japanese fans of Smash would ruin the very franchise they love.

yeah they are probably NOT showing multiplayer screen shots in these things, its probably like the special things in adventure mode

We don't know anything right now. Sit tight. Who knows, it might be totally awesome. I'm sure some of us were against some initial changes to SSBM.

Though, I do think Mario's head is way to big. It's the size of his body, for crying out loud.

It could just be part of the opening movie, or the use of a special item. Doesn’t necessarily mean they added meters or supers or any such things. They might have, but best not get a heart attack right.

I think it's probably something like a cutscene.

looking at IGN's high quality screenshots, it looks like theres a whole new level to gameplay, something like "SUPER ATTACKS" or something... look:

http://media.revolution.ign.com/media/748/748545/img_3595433.html
http://media.revolution.ign.com/media/748/748545/img_3595437.html
http://media.revolution.ign.com/media/748/748545/img_3595441.html

Dont look like anything I've ever seen.
Also, look at this. looks like when they flame glow, they are fully charged up, like when they glow, they are ready to use their super attack or something... Look:

http://media.revolution.ign.com/media/748/748545/img_3595429.html

http://media.revolution.ign.com/media/748/748545/img_3595452.html

Also, does any one else think the number of charecters shown is fishy? only 4 old charecters, and 5 new ones.

Yeah I hope it's part of a cutscene. Otherwise the Drive gauge or super moves would change the unique fighting system SSB has had for the past years. Looked convincing though I mean not only Link , but Samus , and Mario too had their cutscene using a super move.

Mic 128 has a badass avatar now

Link's looks pretty flashy and so does samus's

I noticed that too, if there were specials in this game IMO, it will be worse off, especially if you have to sit through one after getting hit by the first attack like in naruto games(gcn). I hope the big attacks shown were just in the intro movie, and the charge is from an item that no one will use. I'm worried. Wii!

I just hope thoes new attacks won't be broken. If you think about it, it might work out really nicely with thoes super attacks if they are hard to hit with. If they are easy to hit with, then it could really become broken.

I really didn't like the power moves in mario power tennis and super mario strikers. They seemed a bit too broken in the fact that they were really easy to do for the most part, and they made instant kills.

It seems to be part of the intro (especially the Samus pic)

1. Not all chars were shown for the first sight of SSBM. Not even non-secret ones.

2. It's not all gameplay footage, there's some cutscene's in there too. Like could this (http://i.i.com.com/cnet.g2/images/2006/129/reviews/928518_20060510_screen025.jpg) be ingame when it's blowing parts of her own suit off?

Silent Wolf

good point. Also This isn't like other games w/life bars, you could just DI or tech, but most likely, everything shown like that=cutscenes.

If you take a close look at samus's you can see a part of her armor(her leg peice) falling off from the blast. I think its a cutscene to introduce the armorless samus.

There's one big thing that makes me highly doubt these supposed super-moves wouldn't be item related (character specific super items, like MK:DD).

Edgeguarding.

Those super blasts would be practically unavoidable it looks like. That and, I dunno, doesn't seem to fit the mood. Well, the competitive mood of this game. It's very fun-smashy-brawl mood. I trust Sakurai though! Whatever this game turns up as I'm sure it'll be amazing.

Oh, and I can't say I'm disappointed it won't be using Wii controls (those GCN controller supporters were right, surprisingly!).

Yeah I just noticed that. But it's still very possible for super moves. Take Mario's picture for example( the one he is glowing) it might indicate readiness for the super power. And what about Link's pic? He was tearing Shiek apart. What about Mario's?

In the trailer Mario grabs some kind of item before doing that move. So if that item is turned off I guess the move can't be done. Problem solved.

Just watched the trailer!

Super attacks seem to be an item you can get, so no fear!

Legendaryhero
05-11-2006, 12:39 AM
yeah if u watch the tailer u see them do these marvel vs capcom style cut scene moves... but they also grab an item b4 hand so i hope what freeman says is true and they make it removeable that said and done they look freakin sweet as hell along with all the other stuff

From the video (http://media.revolution.ign.com/media/748/748545/vids_1.html) it looks like its an item (the HAL type logo thing) that gives you the fire glow, then lets you do a Super Attack, though it is a cutscene, it looks an awefull lot like real moves. some one whos more of an expert should watch it and say what they think.

Really? The image of Samus' ultimate charge shot appeared to me her intro, showing how she lost the armor of her Varia suit..

Darn I was beat to it lol. Yea these special moves only seem to be able to be done as an affect to an item. So itemless battle will still be the same, but item battles have a whole new kick *** way to play.

Johnmazz84

Maybe the idea of suits will be more interative, ie samus is regular samus till she does a Super Attack or maybe gets hit with one, then her suit breaks off. maybe everyone will have something like that (i hope not TBH, call me a SSB Purist...).

On the other hand, maybe its just in the movie (a movie that was just meant for a closed session, after hours small scale press confrence and not for public consumption (or atleast not to be cannonical))

adding a super move wont change the rest of the game.

even if you can do super moves during a regular match without items, its not such a big deal. it will just add more strat really. its not like it will turn into street fighter or anything because of a move addon. the rest of the game will still have the same mechanics we have always loved. plus there are always many ways to play. there will probably be a way to play classic style. probably the new stuff will own anyway and we might not even want to play classic style. just wait. i trust these guys.

That a good way of thinking about it did seem like an item and maybe it's like a very rare item or something like in Powerstone where you need to collect a certain amount of those power ups before you go jesus mode on a brother.

ive heard they dont wanna change it really, those supers are like adding a bazooka to CS tho -.-

Uriel I completely agree. The whole rapid attack flashy combo **** is straight out of a street fighter and takes the game away from its original charm.

The super mario red punch looks to be an item, but link's attack and some of metaknights stuff looks rediculous.

Sensai

Hopefully it's the item, and that item can be turned off. If not, then it's going to make a LOT of people angry. And to make a lot of people angry about a lot of people's favorite Nintendo game would be a very bad idea.

I can see it now...

'Call up the president, and nuke Nintendo. I just got gayed by Mario's super move.'

you can definitely see that its an item in the trailer... and if its an item whether you turn it off or not is not a bad thing. I don't see anything wrong with some innovation, especially if its from that man, he has a talent for innovation. Gets my approval.

It IS innovative...but it's very likely to 'splode in their faces. I mean, we don't want 'super combo point build-up' crud, we want Smash.

If it indeed is an item, I see it being banned in tournaments. Something like what Mario does just seems broken to me.

What? Shooting the whole stage with a giant Marioken seems broken to you?

KO moves would suck, and potentialy ruin the game. But it appears to be an item and we can just turn off the items like we did with melee so all will be good.

I don't think the Samus one is a 'super attack', but the Link, Mario, and Kirby ones do seem like that. However, it looked fairly clear Mario was only able to do the super attack after he picked up that item (from the video). In which case, it won't be a problem.

We've already seen that the developers want to keep a classic smash feel from the fact that we will be able to use the GC controller, so I think we can rest assured, smash will still be smash.

I agree 100%, making it be item based is definitely positive as I can see myself BUSTING MY *** to get that item during some multi-player. But i Have no worries, I know it will work out fine. Smash has made my E3

Even if there are special moves, maybe there will be an option to turn off the "special move icon."
