Welcome to the Official Music Discussion Thread! With Omni's approval, this is the place to talk about what type of music works well with smash combo videos. A few ground rules to keep things civil and organized:

GROUND RULES

1. DO NOT upload copyrighted music in audio format. The smash community is small enough to be able to safely use any type of music in our videos without fear of legal reprisal. However, it won't take many mistakes to put us on the radar of the RIAA. Theoretically, they could crack down and spoil everybody's fun, but as long as we don't spread music files, everything should be just fine.
However, if you can link to legal site (usually a streaming site run by the artist, myspace, etc) then that would probably help people who are not familiar with the song in question.

2. This is a topic about opinions. People have different opinions. Respect other people's opinions.

3. State your opinions in an intelligent way. Posting "zomg coldplay rulez!!" or "all rap sucks" is not helpful to anybody. Please back up your opinions with reasons.

4. Remember that this thread is about what type of music works well with smash music videos. This is not the place for non-specific discussion of music in general.

5. When possible, cite examples, preferably giving links to the video's original thread. i.e., if you are discussing the merits of rap music, talk about how well it worked in Rollout and link to Rollout's thread.

6. All ideas for music are free game unless specified by the original poster. This means that if I post that "Breakout" by Foo Fighters would be awesome in a video, I can't be upset if somebody else uses that song in their video unless I posted that I had plans to use that song in an upcoming project. By the same token, if you are going to use somebody's idea, the courteous thing to do is PM them and let them know.

So what am I supposed to post?

You can critique already made videos' music selection
You can discuss what genres fit best with which characters
You can post the names of songs or artists that you think would work well with a future smash video
Whatever else you can think of

Sorry for the rules wall of text, but I'm afraid a thread like this would become a flame war without some structure. Hopefully this will work out well and people will be able to share their opinions and ideas.

One of my favorite types of music for smash videos is what I refer to as "hybrid", which is basically a mix of rap and rock. I used an examples of this genre in Soldier of Fortune's first song (link in sig) and both of the main songs in Aces and Eights (link in sig). This type of music has a lot of energy and a good beat, so it brings out the hard hitting combos well. A different take on the same genre includes groups such as Flipsyde, who mix rap and rock but with a more laidback style. I think several of Flipsyde's songs would be great in smash vids, espcially "Revolutionary Beat" and "Someday", which can be streamed at http://www.flipsyde.com/main.

Nice idea. I found out that love music goes good with smash, but for certain characters. It would go good with people like Marth, Roy, Peach, ect. But not everyone likes love songs. Rap songs always fit smash. I like dance music, but stages are important to see if it fits. After I saw the original WounD of the WinD, I kept replaying the song in my head when I was playing the game. Dance music goes good with satges like: Kirby 64, FD, and FoD. Not in all cases though. For characcter specific music types, I would say:

Marth: Dance music
Ness: Rap
Doc/Mario/Luigi: VG remixes
Roy: Japanese pop
Bowser: Something from an anime that has no words in it,

That's all I can comment on

I have this idea for a long time, i always thought it was great. I was always thinking of someone, like DSF or another really good sheik, to make a combo video. The name of the Video would be Super Sheik, and it would use the song "Super Freak" by Rick James. Maybe its been done, but ive had that idea for a long time now. Anyone can use this idea, but id prefer if you had somewhat high skills in the game, as it is a great idea only pair-upable with a great player. PM if your thinking about using this idea, ill approve or not in a polite manner (my 5 secs of power mwahahahahahahah!)

Personally i think that only 4 types of music don't got well in combo videos:

1.Gangsta RAP
2.Slow music
3.Hardcore
4.Most OC remix's

Thats just my opinion but those can go well if the person did a good job editing the song to the music. I thought the Hip-Hop songs in Bob moneys and the Germs combo videos worked well with the video.

I see Ness smashing to remixes of FF7 music (Looks at Sickness). They just- GO together.
The OC_Remix "Bowser is Pissed" is one of my favorites and goes well with Boozer vids.

My list of which music fits each character IMO:

Ness- FF7 or something similar
Bowser, Ganon, and Mewtwo- Heavy Metal
Pichu- Fast, electric music
Mario, Doc, Luigi- Some Rocking Mario Remix
Zelda- Classical
Peach- Pop (IDK why, though), or love
Roy (and maybe CF)- Rock songs obsessed with fire (emphasis on Metallica's "Fuel")
Ice Climbers- Christmas Rock
DK- Something with a Jungle feeling
Kirby- Remixes of Kirby's Adventure
G&W- ???

A Ness VS Marth vid could have the One Winged Angel music (Final Boss of FF7). In fact, I wanna see that. :)

Otherwise, if the music sounds cool and goes well with the vid, I approve.

Great comments so far, thanks for posting your ideas and opinions.

What do people think about Fort Minor? I think that several of their songs would work well, including Remember the Name and Believe me (can be streamed here (http://www.myspace.com/fortminor)) along with a few others like Red to Black.

I think that most upbeat music with a good background beat work well in combo vids. The fast paced music synchs well with smash cause most of the time players are moving all over the place and attacking really quickly. It sets that kind of intense atmosphere and draws viewers in.

I tend to like techno music for vids. Theres the always present background beat and I like the synthed music. But some songs don't work. If the beat is a bit slow, maybe more trance oriented (I'm not even sure really. I'm using the term techno very generally and the term trance very librally...), I don't think it accentuates the action as well. This may be a stretch, but I think the genre of Trance itself has a kind of hypnotic quality, as seemingly implied by the name. It's not bad, and some trance is upbeat, but it doesn't really pump you up. But please correct me if I'm wrong since I'm probably making a huge assumption. If the beat and music are a bit hyperactive though , it could actually distract from the action, which defeats the purpose.

Rock songs are pretty cool too. The song Advice by The Pillows is a tense sounding sound with a strong and fast beat. And I don't know if it can be considered rock, but Tank! by The Seatbelts is an awesome song. Vivid sounds, a mellow bass line, and also has a fast tempo.

Now don't get me wrong, I like slow songs very much, but I don't think that slower tempos match the rapidity of motion that smash is known for. When you watch the best players, they never seem to stop moving, and neither should the music.

Most of the music in Adventure by SDM was really really well placed and worked well. My favourites were temple trance and rockin radio.

Also, the original version of Bombs over Baghdad that you used in soldier of fortune was nostalgic and really... worked.

I used to be a big fan of AMVs (Anime Music Videos) and participated in AMV communities and production. AMVs provoked more emotion from me than any other artform. Unlike Smash combo videos, AMVs were primarily about synchronization rather than the display of skill.

My favorite types of music for music videos (and just in general really) are songs which are climactic. The beginning is usually constant, then it drops off and builds up into a star-studded finale and then trails off to the credits. Songs like 'O Fortuna', or 'Bat out of Hell' by Meatloaf (although the song climaxes 3 times... -_-, silly Meatloaf). Unfortunately, it is rather difficult to do this in a combo video. I still try, but it is easier to ignore synchronization and just use a fast-paced song with the occassional hard-hitting chords for some serious hits.

Anyway, some reviews:

Soldier of Fortune - Absolutely loved the music choice. Bombsoldier hits fast and hard, and the song choices reflected his playstyle and practically made the music work with his downsmashes. I enjoyed the songs and video so much that I stopped myself from downloading the songs (until 30 minutes ago) so I could enjoy the video more the next time I watched it.

Aces and Eights - The music genre and beat was a fit--I just think the songs are horrible. Personal preference, but this whole post really is. I mute the sound and play something else while watching this video.

Jungle Fever - Pretty nice opening. Really a perfect fit for DK. Good beat, a few nice lyrical matches. IT'S GONNA' BRING YOU DOWN!-----HUUUUUUUH!

Silent Assassin - Loved the song. Great synchronization. Nice transitions. Good use of non-combative technical skill display during slow musical moments.

Shined Blind - The first song MAKES you appreciate Fox and everything he does. When I play this song during matches I play as Fox and it's been commented that it gives me an unfair advantage. Techno has a nice constant beat, and subconsciously alerts you to technical 'robotic' skill due to the intrinsic computerized nature of techno. The second song didn't fit my fancy, 'the art of losing' was lyrically weird, though the quadruple waveshine to the lyrics '1, 2, 3, 4!' was very pleasing.

Death From Above - I liked the opening sychronization with the gunshot. First song was alright (no further comment on it), second song I loved (no further comment).

Hylian Nightmare - The second song has a strong neurological link embedded into my brain between lyrics 'He's a f*cking NIGHTMARE!' and a particularly nasty Link combo.

There are a few songs that fit perfectly with certain characters that i wish the authors would of put in.

Jigglypuff- Rollout by Ludacris
Fox/Falco - Turn it up by Chamillionare (... show you how to get your shine on...)
or
Get your shine on by Birdman
Falcon- Captain Jack by Captain Jack

I think the mortal kombat rave song would go awesome with "soldier of fortune"

What are some suggestions for a Falcon combo video? Captain Jack by Captain Jack was kind of... Soft? When I think Falcon I think of balls to the wall lightning fast paced metal.

I agree, C Falcon needs fast paced music. Some crazy techno with a fast beat would fit nicely; metal would also work, if it was fast enough. System of a Down is one of my favorite bands, but I always thought their music was a little too disjointed for a combo video. For Falcon, though, it might be a great fit. Atomship is another great group, but they might be too slow paced for a Falcon video.

My favorite music that can work with any fast pased video is Dragonforce. There songs are speed metal mixed with electric and I love it. Anyway I am sorry if asking questions goes against the rules, but my friends and I have to know the answer to a question. What is the song of the match on www.ssbm.it with P.C. Chris's Marth plays MoFo's Fox? The beginning sounds like Dragonforce, but the lyrics definitely aren’t Dragonforce.

For Roy or C. Falcon, anything song that mentions fire or something burning is usually good. Initial D songs come to mind as 90% or so of those songs do just that.

I've always liked fast paced music to smash videos. Either techno, metal, or fast rap or pop. Most slow music does not fit the mood as a "battle" theme. Video game music remixes sometimes work, sometimes doesn't. If the remix is either too slow or just sounds bad, it usually doesn't work. Some good remixes of vgm for making smash videos include any of the songs from the Black Mages (FF remixes), or something that relates to the character (a remix of a Kirby theme for a kirby video, for example) DDR songs usually work, but I'd rather save "Captain Jack" for a Captain Jack video.
I think it's sometimes cool to have song lyrics that relate to either of the characters in the video, or just a general theme related to fighting. Like a song with the word "sword" or "slash" for Marth.
The only music I can see never working for a smash video is most country or folk, opera, anything that's too slow, anything too "happy" (like barney or other kid show themes), or Hanson (enough said). Joke songs, like Weird Al, really only work in joke videos.

well besides captain jack what do you think of the one's i suggested?
Jigglypuff- Rollout by Ludacris

Fox/Falco - Turn it up by Chamillionare (... show you how to get your shine on...)
or
Get your shine on by Birdman

maybe just for some parts in the intro would be better for fox falco

have any of you heard the mortal kombat rave? my team and i were talking about how it would go perfect with a theoretical smash bros charecter boss that has like every characters best move and moves lightning fast , similar to inferno for soul caliber II.

We played some team battles with it, and i swear we played so much faster.

it would probably fit best with a falco vid because falco attacks more rythmically compared to others.

Rap works sometimes good beacause whatever people say, it can sound powerful and is pwning music

he he... i got a really funny picture in my head when you said barney. A good intro to like a pichu or jigglypuff video with clips of them taunting and jiggly singing. he he he... that made me chuckle

Though I'm not really a fan of techno, I liked the music in the "Shined Blind" video. Let's just say you won't ever see me with my MP3 and the genre Techno in it.

Really, any hip-hop song with a nice beat. I am a hip-hop head, but I'm not biased, trust me. So for me:

Techno
Hip-Hop

Yeah.

I agree with falsefalco- the music in Adventure fitted perfectly with each part. The techno songs were great, and the Giga Bowser part ruled all.

Basically, you can't go wrong with well known rap and rock songs. I play Falco, so the only songs I'd consider are:

Bat Country by Avenged Sevenfold (A definate choice for Falco IMO)
Room 21 by Hinder
Step Up by Drowning Pool
I'm the One by Static-X
Two Words by Kanye West and Mos Def

Fast-paced characters should really get faster paced rap and rock songs. Bands like Outkast and Disturbed really fit Soldier of Fortune, which is in my opinion the real reason why it is ranked up with Shine Blind as one of the best combo videos of all time. Middle speed characters (Marth, Sheik, etc) should get artists like Nirvana (ex: Smells Like Teen Spirit), Eric B. and Rakim(ex: Don't Sweat The Technique), and Cypress Hill (ex: Insane in the Brain). Slow characters shouldn't have combo videos. ;)

Please don't choose Techno songs ever. They don't appeal to everyone. Rap and Rock generally appeal to more people than Techno.

Regardless of the genre, you'll always find people that don't like a certain type of genre. That said, how much people like a song or genre should be completely irrelevent to the picking of a music for a combo video. Pick something that matches the pace and "tone" of the combos and sequencing according to the author, and that's that. You might be making a combo video for others to watch, but just because there's a preference among some people as to which music they like and don't like should not force the author of a video to conform to those preferences.

Now what I am really posting for. Just occurred to me, a good song for combo videos in general is "Fade In/Out" by Paloalto. Go crazy with effects.

Also remember that you're not just trying to find music that matches a character, but the possible effects and sequencing of clips as well. Always pay close attention to the beats, lyrics, and melody changes when listening to music to find good music for videos. A lot of times now, I find myself listening to music and just thinking in my head, "This part of the song would make for good blur effects", or, "I could use this beat and get a good slo-mo scene from it". Having music that's fun/easy to edit to is just as important as the music itself.

Too true.I dont think categorizing music styles and songs to match certain characters is always going to work as you also need to analyze the initial style of the player you're making a video of.I think there is no better explanation for that than "The Silent Assasin",video of Silent Spectre.I think its a great video that doesnt fit in with any of the genres mentioned for Falcon players, and thats because it fits Spectres playing style. If I ever do make a combo video,I'll try and make the music specific to the player who I'm concentrating on.Granted,I do realise that for most Falcon players I guess a fast-paced song would work,I just think that it isnt guaranteed and that putting the wrong music in with the player will potentially upset the combos. My favourite music for combo videos that I've seen:
Mindgames Music Video-Great pace, great changes of pace, hard hitting lyrics, well synched action.
Soldier of Fortune-Really dont need to say much on this, worked perfectly with Bombsoliders style.
The Hylian Nightmare-Good beat and timing worked well with Germs fluently paced combos.
Greenish Machine-Jazzy beat worked well with the Luigis comical playing style.
Boozer Cute-the choice of Bowser music worked well with Bowsers brutal sluggish style.
Mario ***-Bouncy music served a good fresh intro to the video.I wasn't too big on the techno in it,though.
Frostbite-Loved the build-up at the start, then the fast pace fitted with the devastating power of Chus climbers.also the second song for the single nana was funny.

As said before, its really just opinion when it comes down to it.With all opinion aside, tempo of some songs suit some players, and I try to look at combo videos with that sort of balance, regardless of whether I dislike the song or not.

yeah i just think techno/dance songs are very good....cuz they move along the combos so well...also, i like to hear hip hop and oc remixes...like the oc remix from mariotality is so beautiful...it gave mario extra power while it was playing....and as for the techno...it goes well with fast and technical characters like fox and falcon...i.e. shined blind.....and hip hop goes well with semi fast characters that are pretty technical with a bit more power....i.e. falco, doc...

Critique of Royal Blood: (http://smashboards.com/showthread.php?t=69471)

First song was definitely a good fit. It was Zelda music, so it made sense, and it just sounded good. Zelda is too subtle a character for loud metal or crazy punk music, and this song (whatever it was called? always show music in the credits  ) fit the pace very well, making the video flow. The second song was also good. Another Zelda song but with a faster pace. The change of tempo was good, it is important to not have too similar songs or it all kind of runs together.

Overall, good music selection (and a good video too :) ).

Critique of 1-800-KIRBYCIDE (http://smashboards.com/showthread.php?t=72490):

Using a song as the theme of a video is tough to do, but this video did a great job of it. The creator matched up the lyrics with the action at a few points, and overall it was a good fit. I liked the song, but I don't think I would want to listen to it too often.

Overall, a good example of how to make a song the theme of a video. Well done.
