Roy vs Sheik

I am working really hard on my Roy these days. My toughest opponent as Young Link is... *drumroll please* ... SHEIK! I know I didn't choose the best alternate for handling higher tier characters. :chuckle: But seriously, how does this matchup go? I'm sacrificing my projectile arsenal for an all-out up-close fighter. Any suggestions on fighting a Sheik?

Well... I say cut the close-up **** and get some distance to rack up some easy bomb/boomerang/arrow damage man. Then get in there and double Fsmash!!!! Lol idk my answer is probably crap so don't listen to me.

i play roy as my main i have trouble when im playing my friends shiek. if i get too close he grabs and starts to juggle me and if i try to stay further he brings out the needles and chain. my tactic is to dodge the needles and slowly make my way close enough to DED or grab and combo from there. my friend also get annoyed when i stay back and dodge his ranged attacks and comes to me instead of me going to him. he likes to dash atack and start his combos from there and i also just shield and shieldgrab and combo. i dunno if that helped but thats what i do to my friends shiek. but were both not great at smash like ken and neo and all those ppl.

Um... grab more than Sheik does and use your range to your advantage. Playing a defensive game is usually a good thing to do and know what the Sheik player is thinking. I'm out of practice so if Neo drops some advice, take his instead.

ya listening to neo would be the best way to go hopefully he posts his advice i would like to know better as well. it would be so helpful if neo were to make a in depth roy guide like some i see here. theres a really good fox guide and link guide with a video on how things look like its very helpful.something like that 4 roy would help me so much

Yeah, you definately want to play defensively against sheik.

Crouch cancelling sheik's tilts is always a good idea, as she can lead almost any tilt into a f-air...d-tilt from the CC, then hit her with a n-air, DED, or grab, and then get back on the defensive.

...honestly, i would think that young link would be a better char to pick against shiek. Especially if you're better with him. 'Course, thats just my opinion.

The instant I see a Sheik I am not going to freak out and choose Roy. I am always endeavoring to improve my Young Link skills. However, Young Link's physics work against him in terms of being combo'd by Sheik. The projectiles are nice but Sheik moves too fast and needles solve most of her problems. Roy has always been my second main. Roy falls faster and can SHFFL a whole lot better in my opinion. His B-moves are all sword-related which is what I feel I need against a Sheik. I also plan on using Roy against overly zealous Captain Falcons.

Ya think so? Hmmm... I will see. I have vids of Caveman getting his trash kicked as Young Link by Rob Money's Sheik. That is what makes me skeptical about using Young Link against her. I guess I could just try to make it work.

but to add my 2 cents......DED works like a biatch! Dont over use it but it helps a bunch.shield grab the nig too.

heh, if your facing a sheik player that overuses certain moves, you could always use that to your advantage, probably the best way to beat sheik with roy is to have lots of experience

But i've only fought a really, REALLY good shiek twice. I guess i don't really have too much experience against good ones. But I got 3 stocked, and then 2 stocked. And I use purely roy, so i don't really know how good y. link does against her. Maybe roy is your better choice. I guess it all comes down to what you prefer.

Well, my Young Link right now is about 10x better than my Roy. I have a really good Young Link, but Sheik always gives me grief. Since Roy is my second main (and I've been training so he's not as bad as I just made him sound under my control) I figured Roy would have a better chance against Sheik than Young Link would.

Well, I've been improving a lot lately with my Young Link too. From the sound of it, Sheik may do more damage to Roy than Young Link. We'll see. I came from a smashfest in Roy, Utah (no pun intended) and Gojira's Sheik destroyed my Roy. (Gojira... doesn't use Sheik... ever...) I'll do some research and get back to ya. :)

You haven't played Falco with Roy? Falco freezes Roy up completely A LOT. I played my crew member cmart today, and he brutalized me. Half the time I couldn't even get a move out because of all the shines; and lasers were annoying. I was able to chaingrab him like the first two matches, but he caught on and never let up with SHFFLed aerials and shines; so I couldn't shieldgrab or anything.

I think Sheik is easier. Not nearly as much pressure is put on you by her, as Falco.

I've played a whole lot of really, REALLY good falcos, and I'd have to agree that shines and shl really hurts. Most of the time, i just don't even try to shield grab falco. But once you get a single down-tilt in, you can put some serious hurt on the space animals. Down tilt->f-smash->edgeguard f-smash/counter will put a falco out really quick. Theoretically that could work on sheik too, but shes alot harder to edgeguard.
Sheik can use needle cancelling nearly as effectively as falcos use the shl, and she can lead that into a tilt combo, or a chain grab to tilt, all which leads to the devastating f-air.

How often do you get a dtilt against a solid or good Falco? Falco rarely gets hit by dtilt because of laser spam and shining. Roy's too slow most of the time for dtilt to sneak in between such things very often.

Counter is no good.

Chain grab is hard to get in because of laser spam and shines.

DED doesn't work too well unless you surprise him.

What Falcos are you playing that actually let you get dtilt > forward smash on them? Or counter? Don't tell me to STFU if you're going to respond to me with something like that.

I didn't know you played Roy too Buzz... Anyway, against Shiek, just play a bit more defensive than offensve. Racking up little hits is probably the best thing you can do, and the DED to kill or go smash-happy on 'em(<--not recommended). Maybe use his U-Throw as the kill, it's what I do if I can't land a smash or the DED against my brother. If anything, pester him with D-Tilts or if it's all or nothing, use the counter as your very last option. Shiek is quite predictable, so expect tilts--->aerial or dash attack-->aerial. DI is very friendly if you can fool 'em...

Since everybody is mentioning it, Roy vs. Falco isn't friendly. From what I've heard, Faclo does much better against defensive opponents, rather than offensive ones. He pillars, SHL spams, and gives very little opening for counter attack. From my personal experience, this proves to be somewhat true(This does NOT mean I'm applying it to everybody). When my brother used to play defensively with Link and Ganon, he'd be flying all over the place. Now he plays MUCH more offensively, it gives me a bit of trouble due to the fact Falco can be stuck in combos forever. You can *try* to play offensive but Roy is pretty slow. So staying in his face can help, kinda....It's just really hard for me to suggest advice for this particular matchup since playing either way is still pretty hard. If you ever trap Falco in a chain grab, I would keep on doing it until he has enough damage to "hang" in the air for a little bit and then use a SHFFLED U-Air(sweet-spotted until he goes a little too high) and then grab. It worked on a computer so I'm not COMPLETELY sure if it works against humans. Anyways, I hope this helps you out.

Heheh...well, Neo, that because you're Neo. You 2-stock just about anybody for free. I, on the other hand, am usually the one that gets 2-stocked in pro-tourny matches.
