i just started playing smash bros competitively against my friends here in canada. i was a very c stick oriented roy and very slow. but after i saw clips of people using roy and a very high speed, i have to learn now lol. i dont understand how poeple dash so much faster than i dash is there a trick to it? also i have wavedashing slowly mastered but i cannot seem to get off a lot of consecutive ones when im trying to wavedash as fast as other poeple. Also i see people doing aerials just off the ground very fast and comboing very fast. i know it involves shffl but i dont really understand the concept of shffl. if ou guys can help me that would be really great!

We're the people playing in Lighting Melee?
Sorry but I'm not a Roy player so I can't give any more help on this.

Shffl means Short hop fast fall L-cancel. So just practice short hopping, then practice l-canceling. Blend them together then just add in fastfalls.
If you showed a vid of you playing, then i could maybe help you out.
Really don't need a vid to help him out. But it would be beneficial for you for us to comment on.
Anyways. Dashing faster? I think the correct term might be foxtrotting? Someone correct me if I'm wrong, please.
-As TheCrazyOne has said. Shorthop Fast Fall L-cancel. Meaning that you either tap the x/y button lightly or up on the sitick lightly, and you will jump shorter and a bit off a ground than a full jump. When you do an aerial attack, you either press R/L/Z RIGHT before you land. The fast fall deals with pressing down right after the attack, or was it at the highest point of the jump? Vertex, if you look at it that way. I suggest practicing with Link, Marth, and Ganondorf to easily notice them. If you them right, you will see yourself recovering faster than normal. If you want to really practice shorthopping, slow down the time to 2/3rd, and get to know how far you go. Switch to normal, and move around and do attacks while shorthopping. If you want to really get better at it, switch the speed to 1.5x. If you can get it there, you got 25% done learning it.
-Using c-stick is your preference. If you are THAT used to it, alright. But honestly, to me, that's a bit slower than using the a button and joystick. But that's just me. But I really suggest using stick and A more, because I feel that you will learn how to be faster that way.
Err kinda need to do some stuff. Keep asking questions. :D will be back to post more.

Try to use more l-cancels and practice wavedashing as much as possible... That is all i can really say, also, dont abuse the C-Stick for Roy... his other attacks can rack up damage quite quickly

First off, now the timing to start wave dashing again after you have already done one for maximum speed when changing directions, or continious wavedashing, you have to L cancle every thing, and respond as soon as you hit the ground.
All shuffl is is, Short hop attack as soon as you leave the ground, fast fall, L cancle and repeat, Roy is great at it, you just have to get the timing. The only reason you see people doing things faster than you is because, they play more often and do it alot more, so there used to it, just practice,
Good luck getting better.

I use roy on the defensive side 58% of the time and 42% on the offensive mainly due to his speed but yeah evasive movements do come in handy when fighting against speedy characters.i recomend practicing evasive movments dude and also in using roy's mighty counter attack which comes in good use during critical situations. i cant really help you on the offensive since i yet have more to learn but on the deffensive i can give you a tip, first try and predict your opponet's next attack, second counter it if nessesry or doge it by pressing L or R and down then quickly counter your opponet with a devastateing smash attack.
BEST OF LUCK dude........ :p

Counter with roy is great if you don't use it ALOT, since unlike marths if you use it at the right time, IT can kill them. However Roy's best way to fight is NOT to get hit at all, and rack up damage until he can just use a quick strong attack to knock them off and keep them there.

c stick is lame. i dont use it because its farther away from the jump button. and dont use roy's smash attacks a lot becasue there is tons of lag time. short hopping is when u press the button only a little bit. attack as soon as u do a short hop. ths is crucial if u want to be good. if u want to be faster use the sshfl. but the best advice i can give u is not to use roy. use marth instead.
He asked for help with Roy, not Marth, commonyoshi. Honestly, I'm sure you that isn't the best advice you can give him. :D
Each character has a potential to overcome others by use from the skills of the PLAYER. Different characters make it easier.
-C-stick is not lame. It has it's advantages as well as its disadvantages. Farther away from the jump button? Who said you couldn't use other fingers to use it? You have the joystick as well to jump. The c-stick button is useful mostly for characters who use Uair attacks and would rather not have their 2nd jump come out at the same time.
-DON'T use Roy's smash attacks a lot? Don't think you've been playing Roy very much? Just because there is lag doesn't automatically mean it shouldn't be used a lot. If you know how to time and position your opponent in a way that he/she can't react fast enough, alright.
-Take advantage of the DED. You know, Double Edge Dance? The Forward B combo. Besides having that as a life saver when trying to get back on an edge, it sure can push the enemy back.

just a bit of advice...if your playing your friends, try to learn their playing style and strtegies, then you should be able to predict when they will attack you, and because counter is insanely powerful for roy, you should be able to beat them and not take too much damage

and of course, if your opponents are good, they will be doing the same, use counter very rarely in a match, when your at least 99% sure you wont miss

of course, over countering leaves you very vulnerable, but through practise you should be able to predict reliably when they will attack you. being able to use counter WELL is one of the most important things with roy

Just to let you know a lot of clips that you see are sped up to save space, so it looks like they are moving faster. In order to make roy work really fast you have to be able to shffl and wavedash consistently. He has a good grab range so I would probably dash dance to grab often.
