I've been trying to WD with Roy, and it doesn't seem to want to work, the closest it gets it airdodging near the ground, can anyone give me some helpful tips, or do i just gotta keep practicing?

Yep. Perhaps you need to tilt the joystick more toward the ground? Can you explain how your hand moves and what buttons you push and all that?

Um sure. My right hand press the jump button and then my index finger presses the R button, I usaully smash the joystick to the left or right, never really aimed downwards.

I would take it slow when practicing the WD with Roy. Try to be comfortable doing it and then eventually do it a little faster. Just have your fingers get used to doing the WD and you'll be all set. Keep practicng!!! Good Luck.

The key to wavedashing is nothing but practice. However, you have to practice correctly. If you're just holding diagonally down and pressing jump and then shield, you're gonna build a bad habit. Instead, try dash-dancing a little bit and then wavedash out of it. It'll help you to do it on the fly, and allows you to build a basic idea of what it feels like to wavedash out of the more basic movement schemes such as dashing in.

Maybe you could watch for Roy's crouching motion and then try to eavedash from there. I mastered it this way and eventually based it off of timing and reflexes. Try tilting the control stick a little more diagonally, that should solve your problem. When you think you got it, then try a larger angle until you can use the full length of his wavedash.
Strategy-wise, you could try running forward and wavedashing backwards repeatedly. This helps out ALOT(for me at least) since it throws off their predictions. It's almost impossible to tell when you would attack out of it, unless you keep on doing it the same number of times before attacking.
Remember, practice is the key to getting better. As boring as it may get, just keep going, it'll help in the long run. Good luck = )

for characters like roy, falco, link, and maybe peach, WD with them is different due to their traction and just general speed
WD with marth or fox is basically pressing jump and dodge within the same couple of frames
for roy and link (i know because i play both), the rate is considerably slower. try it out
