Alrighty, I was playing my friend's Fox and I was using Roy. I'm a fairly good Roy player, but not as good as some of those I've seen. I know most of his combos and can maneuver(sp?) him quite well. Now, normally I would 3-4 stock him(out of 5) with my Falco, but when I tried Roy he gave me some trouble. I lost the match by two lives(one maybe,-can't remember-but I doubt it). My main problem was that I couldn't really catch up to him to hit him despite the fact that Roy has a decent range. I usually try to avoid using the smashes as they are slow, and if I miss I get punished for it pretty badly. I also didn't really try to edgeguard since he usually uses the Fox Illusion to recover so that I can't counter him. I do have trouble killing him too. Maybe I'm playing too defensive? What do you think? Any advice is appreciated. By the way, should i shorten the length of Roy's wavedash? Or should I just continue to use the full wavedash? Thanks.

You should dtilt if he tries to sweetspot the Fox illusion so that you can pop him up for a Usmash. Also learn how to chaingrab, you can rack up some decent damage quickly.

Like 5150 said, edgeguard with B, however if you see and know for sure he is going to do Fox Illusion onto the ledge just jump or wavedash onto the ledge before him to ledgehog him.

Playing Roy against a fox is a strange situation: You kinda have to take the offensive due to the lack of a ranged option, but you're also very vulnerable in that situation. You also have a lot of trouble punishing Fox outside of f-smash. Now don't get me wrong; F-smash is a great punish... it's just not going to win you the match on its own. Try starting off with some d-tilts and grab attempts. Remember; shield grabs aren't the way to go. Try some dashing grabs, or Jump cancelled grabs if that's your cup of tea. As usual against fast-fallers, d-tilt is a great setup for a lot of stuff: just watch their DI. If they start to DI away, be prepared for a counter-attack after they tech. Don't be afraid to roll back if you think your shield is gonna eat it. Around 35% or so, you can start trying to throw out your DEDs; 3rd step forward if you wanna kill by the ledge, and 3rd step down if you wanna just finish it out. Up if you're REALLY lucky and want that spike bad enough =P After about 55% or so you can start looking for an f-smash kill. This percentage is too low to guarantee a KO with 3rd DED forward, so you'll generally wanna go with third step down at this point, just so it's harder for them to retaliate should you whiff the third step somehow. f-smash KOs here. At around 75%, you can start killing with DED 3rd step forward. Pop them up with third step up if you think you can land it that way - it'll lead into a 4th step power hit. Here's also where d-tilt starts losing its usefulness. You start to lose the ability to follow with a n-air assuming your opponent DIs correctly (Which, by the way, is to DI away from Roy. It's tough to follow up on that sorta DI). Be careful with your d-tilts, and don't spam it too much. It's still a good disruption attack to throw off momentum, but it loses its combo potential.

As for edge-guarding... Don't stand at the edge if you're gonna use Flare Blade. It's just silly. If you're standing by the edge, use f-smash. Jump out if you plan on using Flare Blade. N-air is a bad option unless its out of D-tilt. D-tilt to N-air is pretty simple, and almost guaranteed if you connect with the d-tilt; your opponent doesn't wanna DI out for fear of dying, so they'll most likely just pop up right into range for your n-air.

Another small note about edgeguarding Fox and Falco:

The illusion move may be pretty difficult to stop at times unless you learn the timing to it...

But fire fox is easy as hell to counter. Mostly due to the fact that it's a constant 3 or so secont start up, you can knock them for quite a loop when you try it.

Dont give him too much range that he will just laser you, but dont stay too close that e will upsmash, utilt, juggle, whatever you.

Use his dtilt, over b moves, and fsmash/ftilt a lot.

Thanks you guys ALOT. I really appreciate what you are doing for me. As soon as I get home from school on Friday, I'm gonna practice with Roy ^_^

This is a sort of weird matchup. I've found that Roy prefers a defensive stance in his attacks but that's not possible with Fox's lasers. Easy solution, learn to powershield >_>

On a serious note, make sure to abuse his fast falling. The moves you should be using in this match the most are dtilt, fsmash, DED, flare blade, ftilt, and fair (you use that in every matchup, I shouldn't need to say it, it's his best aerial IMO). Those are listed in what I think are the most important moves in this matchup.

Oh yea, before I forget, grab... a lot. Dthrow and uthrow will help a lot. Dthrow with getting a cheap *** attack if they don't tech (or tech chasing), uthrow for the above reasons and chain throwing.

EDIT: ****, I can't believe I forgot the DED.
