sorry to say it, but he is far from the best. if you take a look at the tier list (i dont have a link offhand, but it's easy to find one) gannon is up there, but not the best. he's something like...8th best?
but of course the tier list doesnt always count for everything, because in the metagame things are quite different from mid level play. For example, i'd say in mid level play, roy would be higher than marth in a tier list, because roy is a more high powered character than marth less relying on skilled combos. one who cannot combo only has marth's fsmash. Roy on the other hand has a stronger set of B moves, a much better up smash, and IMO is easier to control for a beginner. This being said, on the teir list marth is second only to shiek, and roy is probably on the bottom 10. Some present arguements that tier lists infact do not exist, and i can PARTIALLY agree with them. obviously a good shiek player is almost always going to win against bowser, but when they are within 5 or so spots on the tier, it's pretty even.
So to answer your question, gannon is pretty high up there. In lower than metagame play, i'd say he's even higher, because his downB is extremely powerful in lower level play because of it's priority and spiking capability. use the fact that his jumps are low to the ground to your advantage, and only use your slow moves when you are pretty sure they will hit, and gannon is a force to be reconed with.

Ganon can be the best character in the hands of the best player for him. I dont beleive in the whole tier list, I beleive its a whole bunch of BS. It all depends on the player's skills with the character and the most important thing with all fighting games strategy! (mindgames). I use C.Falcon and I have never lost to anyone in Melee and alot of my friends use Marth,Sheik and Fox because they are supposed to be the best...they use the whole wavedashing and advanced skills also and I still beat them.
In short you can be the best with Ganon depending on how much you train with him (such as wavedashing). So forget about that whole tier nonsense...
