So Texas smash isn't exactly down the drain yet. There is a place in Austin called "Cyber Jocks" They have 6000 square feet of space, 4 huge TVs, and the manpower and software to host a very large SSBM tournament.

I think the first goal is to bring together all Texas smashers and have a large tournament here. This will give the place enough credit to consider out of state competition next time.

They will need some help in the form of extra TVs/cubes, but that is all. The rest they can handle (with TGA's bracket software, and their own employees).

So the question now is a date of this tournament. I think it is reasonable to advertise roughly 2 months before the actual tournament. For this reason we feel a tournament in January 2006 will be a good time. If you disagree with this, please feel free to voice your opinions here in this thread.

They are willing to do any ruleset we want, so we will go with a rule set that most national tournaments use (moast 3, mlg, combination of both). That can be discussed later.

This thread is to discuss a suitable date for this large smash tournament.

We are thinking $10 entry fee 1 v 1s only so far. Sometime in January 2006.

There is a long weekend in January. What do you all think about having this tournament the Saturday of that long weekend?

EDIT: The date in question is Saturday January 14th. the 16th (monday) is MLK day and a holiday.

If you can attend this tournament, please give us a confirmation. We want to see what the numbers will be like, and then solidify details. (If most people want a different date, we will go with a different date).

I am there if there are a lot of people. I need some money.

Any weekend in January is good for me and I might be able to bring a couple of my friends.

Never been to big tournament before and kinda looking foward to it.

Ok host a two dayer. 1v1 and then 2v2. The entry has to be around $40 - 50 bucks, making 15-20 or so go towards pot and rest to renting the place out. You should plan this out and make the set date higher so we can all see if there will be oosers

I'm always up for anything going up in Austin. Everyone from SA is always interested in going to Austin.

well they first want to do a texas only type tournament to see how it goes. then if it goes well they will make it bigger the next time around, with the intention of drawing in oosers.

also i asked him about prizes, he said that the entry fee can be what we want it to be, and they will take 25% of the pot for themselves. the other 75%

I will ask him about considering a 2 day event. If that does not work out, I will still let him know that Jan. 14th will be a good day for the tournament (1 v 1).

LMAO chillin is the coolest. Alright, so I found out this place is only 10 minutes away from my house. i'm gonna go over there and start planning for this. I can house probably 3-5 people OOS gets 1st dibs. *looks at chillin*

I will be the one to post this in the Tournament Section after I get more details. Suffice it to say, I'm gonna make this the new MOAST, bigger and better.

IMO deep down in my heart say you guys should not go on with this. Why I say this is we can spend our time advertising a tournament that has already happened, and going to happen again "S.EX" this will be less of a hassel and who wants two tourneys trying to be the "big one" both in jan. I say we all back up sex2 and try and get oosers to go. Im sure we can get all Texas to go to sex2 and hopefully talk to some AZ, Cali, MW, Ecers to come and play with us.

I am confirming that me and 2 of my other friends(Kailo34ce, and Tyle325) are going. already asked off that day.

I can bring two TVs and 2 GCN and 2 copies of SSBM.

that weekend thats attached to MILK DAY sounds the most reasonable for the tournie.

Directions to the place might need to be put on this thread though.

EDIT: but yea Mr.C has a good idea. well its what ever yall decide. either way i can bring cubes and tvs and SSBM.

Mrc... why are you trying to ruin this? We can still support SEX, but this is something I've been wanting to do ever since MOAST2. (my first tournament) I want to hold a ginormous tournament in Texas before SSBR comes out. Maybe this could be done during Spring Break, but I would like to do it sooner. This place will be able to accomodate far more people than Stargate would. Please giv me some support here. I have worked with the Dkrew and TGA before, and I know exactly what it takes to run something like this. I have many people around here that would be willing to support me in creating a Tournament worthy of the greatest State for smash; worthy of replacing MOAST.

I still completely support fluffy and S.ex, but this is something I've been imagining ever since I 1st went to a smash tournament. I want to do this, I ask for support from around the state, and I promise Austin is capable of creating and hosting a noteworth national tournament reminiscent of MOAST.

I want so badly to make this happen, so I ask for support. I still plan to do all I can to make this happen whether I get that support or not, but it would be appreciated. Like I said, if necessary we could change the date so it wouldn't interfere with S.EX2, but I know this is capable of being bigger than S.EX2 and I want dearly to make it happen.

thank you.

Well, I'd come to this instead of S.EX.2 simply because the air anywhere else in the US is better than Houston, so that's a +1 for this tournament. I'd probably be the only one coming from Oregon, but i could bring a GCN if you guys need any, although i don't think i'd want to pack a TV on the plane.

This tournament sounds awesome, hopefully it does get more publicity (JF is working so hard in the hub) and does evolve into the next MOAST.

dcx1287

Well the thing is I do not want this tournament to get out of state recognition just yet. I think it is reasonable to have this be focused only towards Texas for the first one, and then if we see that Cyberjocks is capable of handling a tournament with 50-60 people + (size of Texas approximately) smoothly, we can have the next one be focused for texas and out of state.

Then again, Mr. C has a point that S.EX already has some credit and perhaps it should be the one to support in terms of out of state competition.

I think the best thing to do is let this tournament happen (only for texas), see how well they can handle things, and then decide which of the two would be better to draw in out of state competition.

I just don't want lots of out of state competition coming to this cyber jocks one and things going terribly wrong somehow. Even they though are using TGA's tournament software, there still needs to be some human input.

In fact, I think what I will do is this: We'll call together all smashers at UT (in addition to competitive Texas smashers) to try and get this cyberjocks one to add up to over 100 members. So then we'll see if cyberjocks can handle that many people smoothly. And if cyberjocks can't, big deal, a bunch of UT noobs get pissed. lol.

Ben he was joking stfu lol.

But foreal who plays in Texas? Converse, CC, Austin. thats the main ones as of lately plus the whole houstononians but there like far away and i havnt heard or played vtown ina while, plus the sakers so like a tourney would just be like any other smash fest out there. It awesome you guys came up with this idea but IMO i think its safer to get everyone from texas to go to sex2 and then some. Im not trying to ruin this im just stating a point.

haha thanks mrc for realizing that :)

i just like to pop in and out and mess with everyone

and you guys to play that silly smash game lol

seriously though, i dont think fluffy or these new people have the clout yet to pull a big tourny such as moast yet. remember, it took Moast 3 years to get the numbers it did at moast 3. Moast 1 had about 20 somethin people, Moast 2 had 64, and Moast 3 had around 130. hell, even the TGs didnt have geart numbers to begin with, i remember even hearing TG1 had around 5 people maybe. Though some of you may not know this, but Silas Elias was the first OOS player when he went to TG2. Doing stuff like that helps make you more noticeable to peoplem instead of just sayin "hey come here im hosting a tourny :)". Basically what im trying to say is, you gotta make yourself known as a great tourny host and person to pull off tournies such as MOAST, FC, and TG. Nothing is gonna come instant, you gotta work up to hostin big tournies.

there i was serious :p

i am DONE with tournies man

FC 3 was my last tourny, I just dont have the urge to do tournies anymore

everyone in the dkrew is moving on with their lives. Me and Scav are concentrating on our college stuff, and Silas, CORY, and Kenshin are livin together in Dallas. Right now we are mainly playing WoW, and im having mroe fun playing that than I am playing smash. I still play smash but barely, ive lost my competitive edge for it. yeah, maybe a year ago i would probably help out, but now there is no real way i could do it, even if i wanted to. I go to Texas Tech in lubbock and i technically live around memphis, TN when i am not at college. So sorry :(

Heh, at least people are mentioning Smashex (or S.Ex as the people of smashboards affectionately still call it XD) as a major tournament.

Just thought I'd throw my two cents out here...

I've been trying since last June to drag out a smash community in Houston, and have successfully done it. There may not be anyone of Caveman or SOS's calibur here (well, Clever, now. XD) but Austin, CC, Converse, and San Antonio aren't the ony cities in Texas that have a smash community anymore. Houston has one, too.

Also, I'd add that I'm not trying for MOAST3 numbers. There's no freakin' way Stargate could handle 130 people. 50-60 sounds like an ideal number, as far as I'm concerned.

January 14th??? Okay, considering that that's the week immediately subsequent to my already-posted date for Smashex/S.Ex 2, this seems an awful lot like a direct attempt to undermine and/or simply disregard the tournament I've been trying to plan. O_o; Not saying it IS, but... Smashex2 = Jan. 7th-8th.... so... People wouldn't come from around the state let alone the country to both tournaments. It'd have to be one or the other..

Thanks for the support, Mr. C... and anyone else who gave it, I didn't read every post that carefully.

I see Rob$ making posts about where have all the big Texas tournaments gone, and then posts about New potential large Texas Smash tournaments scheduled almost directly on top of the one i've been trying to publicize and plan. People asking me to change my date to accomodate other tournaments scheduled after i'd set my date... Add that to the fact that aside from the wonderful Houston smash community that attends the monthlies and provides financial support to Smashex2, I'm running the show pretty much by myself, I see posts like this and feel like nobody will ever take Smashex seriously.

I don't mean to offend anyone, and I hope I don't... but i'm getting pretty tired so i'm just gonna go to bed and not say anything else.

dcx1287
10-21-2005, 01:06 AM
lol sorry to be honest I did not even notice the date for Smashex. There was no original intent of undermining your tournament, I simply did not see it. Remember, the Jan. 14th date for this tournament was not finalized yet, and so now I will talk with cyber jocks and have a different date for this particular tournament.

This also gets me thinking, if we are not going for out of state competition for this first tournament and only Texas competition, I think it may be more reasonable to have this tournament earlier than January. Perhaps in December?

What do you all think of a Texas tournament in December at Cyberjocks in Austin?

JesusFreak
10-21-2005, 01:07 AM
Fluffy, you wouldn't even be around if it wasn't for me. I've been planning for this for a lot longer than you have for S.ex. Who have you gotten interested in S.ex from OOS anyway?

Also, if we need to we can probably push the date back. But my point is just like you said, there's no way Stargate could hold a MOAST sized tourney. CyberJocks could, and Texas deserves a tournament like that.

To Sint: I'm the new guy with the urge for running tournaments. As I've said, I wanted to host a tournament ever since MOAST2 way back in the day when I had never been anywhere before. You guys really helped give me the love for the game that I have, I don't care about how good I am (much) anymore, I just want to play, and let other people play and enjoy themselves.

You make a very valid point about having to work up to big things, but I am very confident that Austin is capable of running a big tournament. Likewise, SSBR will be coming out soon, and I have no idea how that will affect the tournament scene. Maybe my 1st tourney will have to be SSBR instead of SSBM. My point is, I would be much more organized, and know what's going on while trying to run a Melee tourney as opposed to an SSBR tourney.
