View Full Version : Kirby's Weaknesses

I looked around the kirby board but could find anything so...
What are Kirby's weakness? More specifically, why is he so low on the tiers. The other low tiers usally have a big glaring weakness that puts them down there, but I can't seem to find any with kirby, other than he's light, (but Jiggly is also light and it's way up there) especially after watching the Kirby Cheat vid. Omni uses like every single one of Kirby's moves in a combo in that movie, even dash attack.
Wait, no nairs.

Nair is perfectly useable for combos, I just don't like to use it in general ^_^
Eh, seems like it could turn out to be a decent enough topic. I'll keep it open.

Aren't you going to contribute? >.<

Kirby's different. That's why.
Seriously, though, I don't know. I didn't make/contribute/fully understand the tier listing, so I have no actual answer.

Off the top of my head.........
Light weight
upSmash has an odd hitbox
The dash attack is weak and predictable
Two broken throws(Forward and Back)
some of the caps suck(Marth, Roy, GanonDORK, Ness and more)
N-air is more like a taunt than an actual attack
And he has been stripped down alot from the previous game
Hopefully HAL will restore his former glory in the next game.

Nair isn't that bad. It has a nice consistant hitbox and is pretty quick to come out. Not that much knockback or range, but it still has some use.
Honestly, though, I like Kirby being a low-tier character.
At least you can join in low tier tournaments...

Agreed. It makes the few who use him much more "Elite", because they take the time to learn a low tier character. Same goes for all low/bottom tiers.

Kirby is slow, and more importantly laggy. His killing moves come out very slow compared to the high tiers, and his range is also terrible. I believe the main criteria used in compiling the tier list were speed, range, and ability to combo.

*cough* not realy
kirby is one of the quicker chars in the game... want proof? go look at omni's vid
also kirby isnt "weak" about average, but deffinitely not weak, and actualy fairly strong when u consider speed/strenth ratio
kirby cant realy "combo" all that well, but he can keep a constant offensive, and the damage adds up quick... and once kirby gets u over the edge, its all over :p

I never played kirby in SSB but i think he is fine now. i dont like people who complain about him just becuase they were better with broken kirby.

Gelmax, please attempt to explain your points...
Kirby is slow,
He has slow running speed, but not the slowest. He also has very poor aerial mobility, so yea, he is slow.
and more importantly laggy. Laggy? Sure, on the Dash attack, U-smash, and maybe on a missed F/D-smash. The Stone and Ground hammer shouldn't even be considered, they are rarely used anyway. His attacks, IMO, are fairly quick.
His killing moves come out very slow compared to the high tiers,
Ok, Wtf? U-air comes out almost instantly, D-smash comes out fast, Bair/Dair come out quickly. The Ground hamemr is his slowest killing move, but its never used.
and his range is also terrible.
Wrong, kind of. His Tilts (F'd tilts) have nearly as much range as Marths sword, this is disadvantaging against Marth, however, as it places Kirby right at the Tip. Cutter has astonashing range, Bair and Fair are great for range. Range is a common misconception due to he has no disjointed hitbox for most of his attacks. Yea, alot of characters have more range, and Kirby's lack of an abuseable projectile hinders his ranged play.
However, his lightweight, and lack of combo's on some characters *Cough*Floaties*cough*, is partly the reason he is low. Also, his slow running speed, poor aerial mobility, and the fact that he has one heck of a time trying to control a match makes him low...
Plus, nearly every character has a nasty trick that Kirby hates.
(Swords, Projectiles, Lightning Kick, Disjointed hitbox, Something to screw the CC, Turnips, etc)

-He's lightweight, like Jigglypuff, but his horizantal recovery isn't as good
-If you miss getting back to the platform with upB as your last jump, you can't DI in hope of returning
-His smashes need to be incredibly close to the opponent
-Unless you're going against cpus, downB and forwardB (on ground) are useless
-Suicidal and escapable throws
-His dash attack doesn't allow him to really combo if you hit with the start of it
-Aerials? bair and dair, and that's about it
-I don't think he's got a sex kick
-Once you're in the air, you're easy to juggle
-By that I mean when you come back down, you're open to attacks since you don't really have an usefulanti-ground attack, like Ganondorf's meteor or down-b, or link's down-a or bomb, or Marth's counter or down-a.

Dark, listen to yourself. Your reasons aren't that great. He may not have the best horizontal recovery, but it's better than others. Plus, his vertical recovery is the best. Yeah, his last jump doesn't have a lot of horizontal range, but since you do have five jumps to get to the edge, that kind of makes up for it. His smashes don't need to be that close, save the upsmash. Heck, down-smash is usually preferred as a tipper than hitting them in the center part. His suicidal throws I do not see as a downside. How can more options be a downside? If you don't want to use those throws and kill yourself or have someone break out of them, don't use thosee throws- simple as that. Eh, I'll give you the crappy dash attack point. But all of his aerials (including Nair) are alright. Who needs Sex Kicks anyway when all of your aerials are good?

not to mention his airials can be done very quickly, with almost no wind down lag (with exception of nair)
