Doc's d-tilt sucks as a move in itself. Using it as a ledge guard may work as a quickie-fix for some random situation, but generally, it'd be a waste. Doc has many other, more effective moves he can throw out.

try using the cape when edge guarding its much more powerful and if time correctly is an instant kill on many characters

Unless you're up against some massive recovery artist like Peach or Jiggs, you can edgeguard by jumping out and using a back kick or two, then use your second jump and up-B to get back. Naturally you'll wanna work up to the point where you're pulling off a guard that's Bob$-esque, but even one Bair can be highly effective.
Another thing to remember with Doc's Bair as an edeguarding tactic is that if you sweetspot the tip of it, you can penetrate defensive recoveries like the FireFox.

Yeah best to go with the bairs for the edgeguarding.

I would consider it, but there's just too many things that get the job done better.

In ledge guarding, without jumping out, there are many better alternatives to Doc's D-Tilt. Doc's cape works for some Up B moves such as Fox, Falco, C Falcon, Ganondorf and all other characters that are affected by turning them around. A shffl'd BAir or NAir works for opponents that are recovering from the ledge. Doc's F-Tilt works well against Fox and Falco's Foward B. Even well placed pills are excellent to ledge guarding.
A D-Tilt isn't an impossible option, yet inefficient and impractical, but you are free to use this in friendly matches.

The Cape also hurts the mirror (it works vs. Mario/Doc's ^B), as a sidenote.
But also, the Dtilt CAN spike the enemy if used and timed correctly. It's all up to you.

I like Doc's dtilt. If Doc has his back close to the edge he could nail a downtilt send the guy flying over the edge behind Doc and ready to nail some bairs. Or dtilt, then backsmash with c-stick, when opponent is at mid-percentages.

Yeah best to go with the bairs for the edgeguarding.
Back airs also give you insane style points. The cape is good for situations against bad recovery players that only have one shot for their recovery. An example of these characters are Bowser, Falcon, Falco, Fox, Ganondorf, Sheik, Zelda, Mario, Doc, Luigi, Marth, Roy etc. Tell me if I missed anyone worth getting a couple good ledge capes on.

You might not want to cape Bowser since he'll just go higher and can still grab the legde backwards (when using the fortress)

I you're are facing a character with a spinning recovery (the Links, Bowser, etc) and can't get to them before they up-B, could you CC the hits of the spin and d-tilt them back down? I'm mainly asking about Link.

If the Link sweetspots the edge, then you may be able to sneak in a d-tilt just before he grabs on. It's a better idea to try and cape him when he's holding the edge though.
If Link's about to land on the stage from his uB, or if his body is going to go above stage level, then I like to just charge up a F-smash. At the end of his sword spin, the sword is angled upward so you can just stand there and wait to smash him while he twirls right above your head.
just edgehog then fall off then double jump then use bair, if timed correctly it will hit and you wont need to up b to get back up.

dtilt sucks. huge lag, no range. unless at high damage the person is knocked directly behind you, and your lag + bair will be slower than theirs. it doesnt even spike all the time, sometimes it sends them up. sometimes i like to use dsmash against marth tho. incase he doesnt sweetspot. stick with cape and bair

bair is definitely one of the best if not the best edge guard.
against fox and friends however, the cape is obviously the best edgeguard. easy KOs

The down-Tilt should not be used as any kind of a guard, even a package guard like a jockstrap or something.
